And do what with them? That matters, a lot.

Thanks everyone for your pointers - I ended up with this:
#!/bin/bash
BACKUP_DIR="/media/disk/AUTOMATED_BACKUPS/DB_DAILY"
CURRENT_DIR=$BACKUP_DIR/`date +%d`
DATABASES="$(mysql -uroot -pNewSecretPw -Bse 'show databases')"
echo 'Backing up databases: '$DATABASES
cd /
rm -rf "$CURRENT_DIR"
mkdir

Hello - I am having a problem with a backup script that I have put together -
when I run it as root from the terminal, it works as expected (with one
caveat); however, when cron runs it, the daily backup folder is created but
no files are deposited into that folder...
Thank you all for your help, i figured out what the problem was and the
script works perfectly now. It was the placement of my variables that caused
it to mess up, also that syntax on the test fixed that part of the equation
as well. Anyway, no more need to try and fix the wpa_helper script

Really you want this:
if [ -z "$ESSID" ]

You probably meant:
if [ -z $ESSID ]
then
echo "unable to use a blank network name"
exit $E_NOESSID

also you use WORK_PATH WORKPATH WORKFILE WORK_FILE
