Initial Setup of Master/Slave Bind servers

I have setup our BIND Master & Slave servers with appropriate configuration in the named.conf. For some reason the zone files are not getting replicated from the Master to the slave. Do I have to initially create each of the zone files on the slave so that updates are replicated? Thanks in adv
