Yes, should've mentioned that we are running CentOS-7. However, as a first test
I ran the setup on virtual machines (without any issues). This led me to
believe the problem I see is at least partly connected to the switch.
Also, the problem persists even if I only boot a single node.

That would depend on what you are booting. I
STP seems not to be enabled. However, under Port/Trunk Settings "Flow Ctrl" was
enabled, and I turned that off (which didn't seem to matter).
Switch is an very old HP Procurve, and it would probably be a good idea to
update firmware on it.
