Molecular dynamics is a good area to look at. Something like a particle in cell (PIC) code is easy to implement and allows you to play around with load balancing. If you want something a fair bit harder but extremely educational, try a 2D adaptive mesh code solving a fluid flow problem -

My bad, I thought openmp had been included in gcc 3.x and up. That would explain why it ain't working. I did have a version compiled with the intel compilers and it was working fine. I just could not figure out why it didn't work with gcc 3.x and up. Brent
