Pacman could do with a feature to bypass authors packages and keys so
those don't disrupt updates.
That would mean installing packages that are not bearing valid
signature. If you don’t want package signing, simply disable signature

It turns out installing archlinux-keyring fixed this problem. I wasn't
aware that package was missing from this system.
I've now found out, I had 2 settings managers installed (xsettingsd and
xfce4-settings); obviously this situation results in conflicts. I
wonder, why I didn't have problems before - probably xfce4-settings is a
new dependency or it was working different before? However, icons are
working again,
