Is there any chance of the -bin (precompiled) versions being hosted once an
official release is made? I guess there's little reason for it as they're
so easy to "compile" yourself, but it would simplify upgrading/maintenance
for a number of users.

AFAIK you can't without repartitioning the drive. The devices are typically
named based on their creation order. It won't do any damage to create the
root partition as /dev/sda4

Once you've logged in to Gnome try switching to a TTY and as root run
"killall compiz". From the gray screen with compiz effects activated it
sounds like a driver issue when loading compiz that turns the entire screen
that color.
