Okay all, I found the option. I had hotplug disabled, so it was now showing up. The / trick helped :D I compiled the 3c589_cs driver into the vmlinuz image (loadable module support disabled), but it doesn't seem to recognize the hardware. As per Thomas, the initialization has to be done by initrd,

My mainbord is dying, so I plan to replace it during this weekend. Originally the installation of the OS (Arch of course) was performed with my sata HD in "legacy ATA mode" set in the BIOS.
