Hi Deepak,

You're dealing with textual messages, right? Just send the text - it's
easier to read, search for etc anyway.

Websocket: Disable compression/permessage-deflate

2023-10-02 Thread Leonard
Hi,

I am debugging a performance issue related to sending binary WebSocket messages
using Tomcat (embed/Spring Boot) 10.1.4 on Java 20 and MacOS 13.5.2.

For this I try to disable compression ("PerMessageDeflate") when sending
messages.
The solution described here https://stackoverflow.com/a/30148633/7198739 does
not work anymore, because the option "DISABLE_BUILTIN_EXTENSIONS" was removed
some versions ago.

Is there any alternative method to disable "PerMessageDeflate" in the current
version of Tomcat? Any guidance or suggestions would be appreciated.

[ANN] Apache Tomcat Native 2.0.6 released

2023-10-02 Thread Mark Thomas

The Apache Tomcat team announces the immediate availability of Apache
Tomcat Native 2.0.6 stable.

The key features of this release are:

- Disable OCSP if the insecure optionalNoCA certificate verification
  option is used
- The binaries for Windows in this release have been built with OpenSSL
  3.0.11

The 2.0.x branch is primarily intended for use with Tomcat 10.1.x or
later but can be used with earlier versions as long as the APR/native
connector is not used.

Please refer to the change log for the complete list of changes:
http://tomcat.apache.org/native-doc/miscellaneous/changelog.html

Downloads:
http://tomcat.apache.org/download-native.cgi

The Apache Tomcat Native Library 2.0.x provides an API for using OpenSSL
for SSL networking with Apache Tomcat.

In order of likely simplicity:

1. Don't request PerMessageDeflate in the client.

2. Use a custom ServerEndpointConfig.Configurator, override
getNegotiatedExtensions() and return an empty / edited list.

3. Add a Filter *before* WsFilter and change / remove the HTTP header

Strange catalina.out not created issue

We have Tomcat Instances on various services that if Tomcat is started from the

I don't have any log output to give you because ONLY the gc.log is getting
created when this happens.

A little more info on this. The server rebooted last night and the auto-startup

The error looks pretty clear to me.

Eclipse is expecting an instance of Tomcat 10.0.x.

You are trying to use it with an instance of Tomcat 10.1.x.

This would be an issue for the Eclipse plugin you are using to either
provide support for 10.1.x or provide a workaround so you can use Tomcat
10.1.x.

So there’s springboot's logging.properties. Should it really affect tomcat’s

I wouldn't expect it to. But something is definitely triggering a
re-load of the global logging configuration.

If you have decided to move-on to log4j2, then that's great. But if you
are only doing that because you can't explain what's happening, I think
it would be better for you to track-down the root problem. If you don't
track that down, you might be ignoring something important that really
needs to get fixed.

./usr/local/tomcat/conf/logging.properties
./opt/java/openjdk/conf/logging.properties

The only other logging.properties is the one from JDK. I tried changing its
content just to see if that was what was being used, but it had no effect.

So the issue still remains, but we have worked around it by configuring tomcat
to use log4j2 as per this documentation:
https://logging.apache.org/log4j/2.x/log4j-appserver.html

With this and the log4j-jul bridge, all logs are now formatted correctly.

We’re migrating our containerized legacy webapps from Java 8/11 to Java 17.
They all ran on Tomcat 8.5, now we’re upgrading to 9.
We customize a base image from tomcat:9.0.80-jdk17-temurin-focal. Amongst other
things, we add a logging.properties to customize tomcat’s log format.
This always worked well, but after our upgrade to Java 17, there’s a weird
behavior that has stumped us.
During Tomcat’s startup, the logs are formatted correctly as we specify in
logging.properties. However, after a certain point in the logs, the logs revert
to the “default” JUL/JULI format.
Apart from this, everything works as expected. But we need the formatted logs
because we parse them with LogStash and OpenSearch.

Thanks Chris,

All I can do is recommend that to the team. It has to be something with how
stuff is being started via suexec instead of doing direct su and then running
the script. At leas that is what I think. Perhaps we can get them do some
redirects of std-out and std-err to a log file when they run the scripts, so we
can see what is happening.
