[Bug 448469] Re: when wireless connection is lost netbook must be restarted

2009-11-18 Thread Zee
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 429035 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/429035

I can confirm that bug and I think it is not the #429035 bug. #429035
says that wlan random disconnects and connects to a network, but this
bug says that after some time you cannot find any wlan networks and
cannot connect to it. I use an Lenovo X200 and after some time (a lot of
hours and after some suspends) i cannot find any networks, but the wired
connection is working. Networking restart doesn't helped for me, and I
couldn't find any workaround only restarting my computer.

[Bug 528661] [NEW] alsa plugin for browsers regularly stops working

2010-02-26 Thread zee
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

about every 30 minutes or so all sound stops working in my browser.
[firefox and chrome affected] to fix, i need to shut down the browser,
restart either alsa or pulseaudio [it doesn't matter which] and then
start the browser. i'll be good for about another 30 minutes before i
have to do it again.

i've done a bit of searching on this problem, as i cannot imagine that
i'm the only one that has it, except that i really haven't found anyone
else with this problem.

ubuntu 9.10
pulseaudio 0.9.19
$ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
Codec: Analog Devices AD1984

i'm not sure what else might be needed for troubleshooting. let me know
and i'll get it for you asap. this problem is most annoying.

** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 528661] Re: alsa plugin for browsers regularly stops working

2010-03-01 Thread zee
fwiw, the two commands to make it work again are:

/etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset
or
killall pulseaudio

i'm not sure if the fact that both of these commands work to resolve the
problem helps to isolate it. my very limited understanding of the ubuntu
sound system says that alsa-utils is a subset of pulseaudio, so the
conclusion would be that the problem is alsa and not pulse, since
bouncing pulse also bounces alsa, but bouncing alsa, does not bounce
pulse.

[Bug 445832] Re: XF86Sleep key not working in thinkpad T60

2009-11-10 Thread Zee
On my Lenovo X200 the result is the same as Eric wrote.

I tried to find a solution using this site:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting

Finally I solved my problem, I should disable the Suspend hot-key in
System->Settings->Hot keys, and after that the HAL catches the key and
it suspends the comuter.

[Bug 317093] Re: Sound stops working, Works after shutting down Firefox and restarting Alsa

2010-01-12 Thread zee
i have a very similar problem.

ubuntu 9.10
firefox 3.5.6 and 3.5.7
uname: Linux li 2.6.31-17-generic #54-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 10 16:20:31 UTC 2009
i686 GNU/Linux

i keep firefox open 24/7, as i think many do. eventually no sound will
come from firefox, although sounds from other programs still work, e.g.
vlc, etc. restarting ffx does not resolve the problem unless /etc/init.d
/alsa-utilities reset is run as well. that is, one must both restart ffx
AND reset alsa to restore sound. one or the other will not work.

still an issue in ubuntu 14.04.1 64 bit

as manuel mentioned, it works fine when libnotify plugin is disabled.

as an evangelist of open source software, i find ongoing issues like
this really discouraging. how can i possibly argue that open source
operating systems are better when i can find record of this issue dating
back to 2008 in a simple google search. it probably was reported even
before that.

[Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter

2015-02-02 Thread zee
5 years later, another random person on the internet spends hours trying
to figure out why the documented -t switch won't work, eventually taking
him here only to find out that the man page is documenting a feature
that won't work.

thanks guys. i wish i could say i at least got paid for these hours, but
no such luck. it reminds me of a scene from 'The Princess Bride':

Count Notify-OSD: [admiring his torture contraption] Beautiful isn't it?
It took me half a lifetime to invent it. I'm sure you've discovered my
deep and abiding interest in pain. Presently I'm writing the definitive
work on the subject, so I want you to be totally honest with me on how
the machine makes you feel. This being our first try, I'll use the
lowest setting.

[Count Notify-OSD activates the water powered torture machine. writhe in great pain]

Count Notify-OSD: [calmly] As you know, the concept of the suction pump
is centuries old. Really that's all this is except that instead of
sucking water, I'm sucking life. I've just sucked one year of your life
away. I might one day go as high as five, but I really don't know what
that would do to you. So, let's just start with what we have. What did
this do to you? Tell me. And remember, this is for posterity so be
honest. How do you feel?

[ cry and moan in pain]

Count Notify-OSD: Interesting.

[Bug 815055] Re: Samsung Galaxy SII not detected

2011-11-16 Thread zee
i've got this same problem. i put a post about it on ubuntuforums but
it's got at lot of views and 0 replies:

mounting android - unable to see deeper than one level.
having a somewhat bizarre problem that i hope the knowledgeable folks here
might be able to help with.

i tried to load some new music on my phone this morning, but i'm unable
to see anything under the top level of the phone. e.g. i have all the
directories under my phone, but all of them are reporting as empty
through ubuntu. checking the filesystem on the phone, i see the content
i expect.

on phone i have:
/sdcard/media/ringtones
/sdcard/media/music
/sdcard/media/alarms

on ubuntu i have:
SAMSUNG_Android/media/

i can create a new directory under media, say 'temp' and i see it on my
phone. unmount, remount, temp is invisible to ubuntu.

checking dmesg i am seeing the following error:

[ 313.767405] usb 2-1.3: new high speed USB device number 7 using ehci_hcd
[ 314.099858] iwlagn :02:00.0: Aggregation not enabled for tid 6 because

[ 315.324946] usb 2-1.3: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd gvfs-gphoto2-vo rqt
33 rq 102 len 0 ret -71

i'm not sure if it shoudl be mounted as a gphoto2 fs or not. it used to
work, and when it did i wasn't paying attention to how it was mounted.

i think, but i'm not certain that this problem has arisen as of the latest
kernel update 3.0.0-12. i'm running ubuntu 11.10. the problem is consistent
across both 64bit and 32bit. i am sad to say that mounting on a windows box i'm
able to see all the directories as that seems to put the problem firmly with
ubuntu.

as of a kernel update i did last night, which oddly hasn't updated the
kernel number in uname, the error is gone, but the behavior is still the
same:

ubuntu 11.10 64bit on a dell latitude e6410.

2011-11-16 Thread zee
a bit more tinkering and i've managed to get it to work, but you have to
put the phone into usb debug mode.

on the phone, go to settings | applications | development. check 'usb
debugging'. go back to your home screen. connect the phone to the
computer. swipe down to open the notifications panel. press 'usb
connected'. you should see a screen with a green android. press the
'connect usb storage' button. the android should turn orange.

when i use this method dmesg has the following:

[Bug 452680] Re: turning off bluetooth is not persistent between reboots

2011-09-01 Thread zee
confirming that ubuntu 10.10 on a dell latitude e6410 has this same
problem.

bluetooth works great via the default applet, but when not using, would
like to disable and have it persistent until i choose to enable it
again. currently there are 2 options:

1. disable bluetooth in bios. [this only works for someone who *never* uses
bluetooth]
2. disable every time system boots either manually, or via script. [this
doesn't gel with ubuntu's "it should just work" policy]

I can confirm this. It would be nice if it was fixed before Intrepid. :)

Joseph, we can't do that, because we can't boot to 3.16.0-37.51 to run
the command :)

It doesn't appear to be .51 though:

[Bug 1082742] Re: plymouthd: ply-terminal.c: 611 ply_terminal_open: Assertion `terminal != ((void *)0)' failed.

2014-02-05 Thread Jay Zee
Just a bit of extra info -- it's possible that this has been mentioned
before.

I am using Acer C710-2834 with Chrome OS installed via s9ryd script.

In my case there are two (2) distinct behaviors.

1. Happens when the Chromebook is Running on Battery power.
The message >>> plymouthd: ply-terminal.c:611: ply_terminal_open: Assertion
'terminal != ((void *)0)' failed
appears and stays on the screen (forever, I guess).
The log-in screen will not appear by itself.
To get to the log-in screen, I have to close the cover and then reopen it.
At various tries, different elements of the log-in screen will appear but I
typically get the password text box.
Typing the password will get me to the desktop.

2. Happens when the Chromebook is Running on Power Supply / Mains (the battery
is inserted and "charging")
The message >>> plymouthd: ply-terminal.c:611: ply_terminal_open: Assertion
'terminal != ((void *)0)' failed
appears and stays on the screen for short time (2 to 3 sec).
The fully rendered and working log-in screen will appear by itself.
Typing the password will get me to the desktop.

Hope this helps

[Bug 1489558] [NEW] failed to open device 'snapscan:libusb:002:002

2015-08-27 Thread Paul van der Zee
Public bug reported:

I downloaded the debian driver package (iscan_2.24.0-4.ltdl7_i386.deb)
for most Epson perfection scanners (mine is a 1670), installed it and
attempted to run any of the 3 scanner programs.

XSANE gave me the message: "failed to open device 'snapscan:libusb:002:002':
invalid argument".
Simple Scan gave me the message: "Unable to connect to scanner"
Image Scan for Linux gave me the message: "Could not send command to scanner.
Check the scanner's status. "

I loathe the prospect of going back to my Vista box. how do I get my
Ubuntu box to connect to the scanner. It's definitely posered, the USb
is definitely plugged in; I'm out of my depth.

The scanner works find with my Vista box, but I loathe working with
vista.
