[Bug 126535] Wrong help instructions when booting CD
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.15 Hello, as I understand, some parts of the help-instructions related to booting the Ubuntu CD are misleading. Almost immediately after I boot my Feisty Fawn Alternate CD the screen tells me that I can receive help by pressing followed by , ... As I interpret the instructions obtained in this way, one should write "install " after the prompt "boot:". But to my experience, bootoptions are entered by pressing and appending to the line that then appears. It is also my impression that the format of some of the bootoptions is wrong. For example, for "Certain DELL machines" the option "aic7xxx.aic7xxx=no_probe" is recommended. However, to my experience "aic7xxx=no_probe" is the correct format. I fear the case may be similar with other versions of the Ubuntu CDs, not only the alternate CD. Just petty detail, but could maybe be improved on? Misled me and another community member for a little while. ;) Cheers :) ** Affects: linux-source-2.6.15 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Wrong help instructions when booting CD https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/126535 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 126535] Re: Wrong help instructions when booting CD
Hi, I just found I could enter the "boot:" prompt by pressing . But maybe the option should still be described? /ycc -- Wrong help instructions when booting CD https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/126535 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 89770] Re: USB ports work only after acpi=off but then WLAN crashes
Hi Thanks for your suggestion. However, Feisty Herd 5 desktop CD does not cure the problem. I see this bug is still classified as "Needs Info, Low importance". I don't think there is any more information asked for. As I understand the bug can now be classified as a "real" bug. I also think its importance is considerable. Some hardware does not work at all. Maybe classification of importance of bug could be raised from low to a higher level? I have also seen other people having the same problem: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2233552 Thanks. -- USB ports work only after acpi=off but then WLAN crashes https://launchpad.net/bugs/89770 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 89770] USB ports work only after acpi=off but then WLAN crashes
Public bug reported: Ubuntu 6.06.1 Live CD works fine except: When USB devices are inserted into USB ports, no icon appears on desktop and there is no way to access the USB device. (The LED on the USB device only lights up and one can hear a click from the CD player.) (USB 1.1, 2.0, flashmemorysticks FAT, FAT 32 all the same) "mknod /dev/sda b 8 0", "mount /dev/sda /media/myflashmemory" does not cure the problem. The system will respond to the mount command by "/dev/sda is not a block device" even though "file" command considers /dev/sda a "special block device". Only way to resolve problem seems to be to set: boot option: acpi=off However, setting this boot option, the system will no longer recognize my WLAN card, though USB ports work with this option. I use Fujitsu Siemens Amilo L7311 laptop, hardware and BIOS as it was delivered by the official retailer in Sweden last summer. Thanks for doing the hard work. ;-) ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- USB ports work only after acpi=off but then WLAN crashes https://launchpad.net/bugs/89770 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I was just going to add some info: My laptop has: PhoenixBIOS rev. [Bug 89770] Re: USB ports work only after acpi=off but then WLAN crashes
Hi, I just downloaded Feisty Fawn Herd 5 Desktop CD. It seems to show exactly the same behavior as 6.06.1: Boot without options: USB ports do not work. WLAN card is recognized by the system. Boot with acpi=off: USB ports work. WLAN card is NOT recognized by the system. For me, it thus seems impossible to make USB ports and WLAN card work at the same time. Ubuntu seems like an excellent OS but as I am sure you understand, it is not possible for me to install until I can use these two components at once. To ME it is a "high priority problem" :-) Minor comments: 1. The "Feisty Herd 5" bootsplash works on my computer and I don't have to go to "safe graphics mode" like on v. 6.06.1. 2. On shutdown: The CD tray won't open and cannot be opened by pressing its button. I must keep the CD in the tray and shut off the computer by pressing return. The second time I tried the Feisty disc (acpi=off), pressing return didn't work either, I had to press the power switch briefly to turn off the computer. In any case the CD must stay in the CD-player at shutdown and I must enter BIOS at next upstart. Then I can open the tray and remove the CD. 3. (I have not tested this in detail) Ubuntu seems to read my NTFS (Windows disc) but depending on how I entered the hard-disk-folder not all the folders on the harddisk are seen sometimes. Thanks a lot for taking your time with this problem. -- USB ports work only after acpi=off but then WLAN crashes https://launchpad.net/bugs/89770 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
