Re: [Bug 257119] Re: Signing on in "Orange.fr" website with my cell phone number and password is endless on my Ubuntu Pc. It works fine on a Windows Xp Pc (same Firefox release)
Hello Pedro, As I did'nt have any news about this little problem and as I could reproduce it when I migrated on Ubuntu 8.10 a few weeks ago, I opened a new bug which number is 314912. I had too some conversation about this problem on a Gecko forum and found at last that if I try to start in "safe mode" or define a new profile, I always had this problem. I tried then a last test : I defined a new user and used firefox without any profile modification : It worked fine and I was able to connect to my "Orange" account. So I think the problem is a profile problem, but after trying to compare the new account Firefox profile and the old one, I'm not able to understand where the problem was. regards, Yan. [Bug 62359] Re: Some more typos
I agree that 'packages' is a technical term and that the following message is more clear: """ This application allows you to add or remove a large variety of applications. Ubuntu and third party vendors offer you a large variety of applications that you can install on your system. """ In the same sense, is application too technical a term? The more colloquial but less specific term 'program' is easier to understand for a non-computer literate English user from the U.K. but I think program sounds patronizing. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, draft edition of 2001, application is defined as: application, n. * Computing. A function performed by a computer to meet a specific user requirement; a program or piece of software designed to perform such a function (as distinct from software which supports the operating system itself). Cf. application(s) program(me) (b), sense 11a, applications software. This suggests that it is reasonable to use the more general term program instead of application. Comments or shall we leave it at that? [Bug 62359] Re: Some more typos
Sorry, after re-reading that the phrase sounds repetitive. Try: """ This application allows you to add or remove applications. [Bug 47158] Re: pppoe connection loses DNS addresses after the first DHCP lease renewal in dapper RC
Hi, I think that the bug is not solved, and now I have finally found a solution. Actually, I'm using Ubuntu Karmic Koala and pppd is at version 2.4.5 and I use wicd (so, I do NOT have Network Manager!) Just install the 'resolvconf' package does not solve my problem: after a while (one hour for example) I can't access any page by using its domain name, but if I try to access to a particular page through its IP, there are not problems. So, it seems that the problem are really the DNS addresses. In order to solve the problem, I set the DNS addresses when I obtain the IP address for the eth0 interface (through 'dhclient eth0'). Since, I find many troubles in order to do this, I prefer to write down all the steps in order to make the system works. 1) comment the line 'usepeerdns' (by putting a # at the start of the line) in the /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider configuration file. 2) modify the /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf configuration file in the following way: - add a line like the following: prepend domain-name-servers 208.67.222.222; (instead of 208.67.222.222 you should put the DNS address you want) Again in the /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf file, you have to modify the 'request' entry. After the word 'request' there are listed some words. You have to be sure, that the 'domain-name-server' word is NOT present (if there is, delete it!) Ok, it's done. Now you can do: ifconfig eth0 up dhclient eth0 pon dsl-provider Now, when you perform 'dhclient eth0', the DNS are setted, and the 'pon dsl-provider' command will not modify the DNS addresses! I know that the level of these explanations is very low (ie for newbie), but I've lost many hours in trying to solve this problem, and I have NOT find in the web a solution to this problem. [Bug 394724] Re: MOD operation returns the wrong value when using huge numbers
I've tried the new version of gcalctool (5.28.1) and something is changed. Now "2^1000 mod 3" returns 0, but maybe the answer is again wrong. Indeed, "(2^1000+1) mod 3" also returns 0, and it can not be possible that the two answers are both correct. I hope this can help. [Bug 1566987] Re: No internet connection through WLAN although connected to network
I have been struggling with this problem for two months now. Since it was suggested that this bug is a Network Manager bug, I had filed a report there: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=765578 But after many attempts, it seems that this is not related to Network Manager. So I'm coming back here hoping to finally be able to use wireless without problems. I'm currently running kernel 4.6 and Network Manager 1.2.0. After boot and after suspend, wireless doesn't work (most of the times), i.e. I'm connected to WLAN, but I have no internet access. Through ethernet (cable) it does work always. And after being connected through ethernet for a while, the wireless connection does work (with the cable unplugged). See detailed reports in the bug report. Can anybody please help me? It's so annoying to depend on a wired connection. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1566987 Title: No internet connection through WLAN although connected to network To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1566987/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1566987] Re: No internet connection through WLAN although connected to network
After some time that the network worked without further problems, I'm now back to where I was before, but with some changes. After boot, there is no internet connection although I'm connected to my local WLAN. But after some minutes, the connection does work. Usually, after another (longer) period of time, the connection stops working again. I can't find anything that would trigger such behavior. I noticed something: When I'm connected to my home network ("paula") and there is no internet connection, I can connect to a mobile hotspot of my smartphone and then I do have internet access. As soon as I reeconnect to my home network, the connection is broken again. Today I ran the wireless info script (https://github.com/UbuntuForums /wireless-info) in three scenarios: 1) After boot, connected to home network, no internet connection 2) Connected to mobile hotspot instead of home network, internet connection is working 3) Connected to home network and waited a while, internet connection is working I attach the three files with the output. Can somebody please help me? It's so annoying - and it's been months already. ** Attachment added: "Case 1) - no working connection" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1566987/+attachment/4762599/+files/1-wireless-info-not-working.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1566987 Title: No internet connection through WLAN although connected to network To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1566987/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1566987] Re: No internet connection through WLAN although connected to network
No, biohazara, disabling IPv6 doesn't change anything. ** Description changed: In a fresh install of Kubuntu 16.04 on a ThinkPad t460s, I can connect wireless to the local WLAN, but I don't have an internet connection. A ping to the router doesn't work in that case. After some minutes, the connection usually (but not always) works. A LAN connection through the same router works, too. It seems that the problem doesn't occur in every WLAN, but in my home network (using an O2 box) it always does. The problem is reproducible with a Kubuntu Live CD/USB. [Bug 320632] Re: tap-to-click and edge-scrolling broken in Jaunty
@Max Bowsher: The case on Acer Aspire One is idiosyncratic. You may try whether this works for you or not: # synclient FingerLow=9 FingerHigh=12 I'm testing the latest Synaptics on Acer Aspire One and I've noticed that the device reported wrong range for pressure. The device reports that the available finger pressure range is 0 - 255, while testing with "synclient -m 10" shows that the maximum pressure is only 70. So you've to press *really hard* along the right edges to scroll. The command above set a sane value for this device. According to apt_preferences manpage, the target release can be set on the apt-get command line or in the APT configuration file /etc/apt/apt.conf, and "APT::Default-Release "stable";" is given out as an example. This is a very common and popular practice used in Debian community to set the default release and using apt-pin, but doing this in Ubuntu leads to serious security impact with no obvious warning. After setting APT::Default-Release to "hardy", which is the "Suite" name for main hardy source, no security fixes nor updates would be installed unless their priorities are also set explicitly in apt_preferences. This is because that in Ubuntu's world, security fixes are from "hardy- security" source and other updates are from "hardy-updates" source, which bear different "Suite" from the main source. Setting APT::Default- Release rises the priority of packages from main source to 990, but doesn't cover packages from hardy-security and hardy-updates, so the latter are ignored since their packages now has lower priority (priority 500 only) than those old ones in main source (990). I set APT::Default-Release to "hardy" on Sep this year until I found this problem today. Removed that setting and I'm surprised to found that I can install 46 security fixes and updates accumulated. Which is pretty sad to me that got known I haven't got security fixes for more than 2 months. This is a radical deviation from the Debian practice. In Debian all security fixes and updates bear the same "Suite" (etch or lenny) so setting APT::Default-Release to "etch" covers all security fixes and updates. I think it's unlikely that Ubuntu changes the organization of it's source, so at least a fix to this problem is patching the apt_preferences manpage, alerting people not to use APT::Default-Release like they have used this in Debian and the reason and the following impacts. [Bug 241927] Re: WD My book hard disk is not turned off when unmounting
I've a little script that properly put an USB device into suspend mode for safe disconnect, those who are brave could try it. It's very simple so you can review it before running it on your system. You should be root or use sudo to run it. [Bug 155215] Re: slow scrolling on all pages - Gutsy
I had the same problem but I've fixed it. You just have to make sure the right video driver is loaded in your xorg. You will probably need to manually edit your xorg.conf. For example, I have Intel on-board video and I added: Section "Device" Identifier "Intel Video Card" Driver "i810" VideoRam128000 Option "UseFBDev" "true" EndSection and change your "Screen" to use the right device: Section "Screen" ... Device "Intel Video Card" ...
