[Bug 269065] [NEW] Skype failure to make a call

2008-09-11 Thread wowflash
Public bug reported:

howdy,

the first time i run Skype and try to make a call it displays
this message :: "problem with audio playback". my sound card works
okay with ather apps.

after exiting Skype i'm getting this the second time i try to run it.
"Another Skype instance may exist". at this point it's useless.

   ubuntu 8.04 using Skype 2.0.0.72-1 Omedibuntu1 (packages.medibuntu.org)
i get the same symptoms using the version from the Skype webpage.

thanks,
jesse fisher

Re: [Bug 269065] Re: Skype failure to make a call

2008-09-11 Thread wowflash
howdy,

here's the deal; i can listen to the radio using the Rythmbox Music
Player. therefor is must be that my sound card
is working aok. so i will reset my system now and test Skype.

no dice - it immediately dispays contact and " Problem with Audio
Playback" and then same "another instance may exist" on restart of Skype. i
can hear the ubuntu startup sounds just fine.

i was a software developer for almost 18 years (25 years ago) . but i
don't have much of clue about ubuntu. unix was brand new back in my day.

thanks for the interest in my skype prob. most other stuff seems to work
very well.

2008-09-11 Thread wowflash
could be. i thought of a clue for you. when i installed skype from
their web page it seemed to go okay. however when it didn't work then
i tried to remove the thing. it did NOT show up in the list of apps in
the synaptic package mgr. so then
i went to the medinuntu page and re-installed using the terminal
scripts from their page. it still woudn't work but did show up in
the list of apps. so at least i can remove skype. do you think that
if i started over with medibuntu thing it would work ? and, what do
you think happened to original install from skype.

i'm using a soundblaster. they work with everything. i think.

2009-02-01 Thread wowflash
hi there,

did this:
ubuntu-bug -p linux

and this:
cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
dmesg > dmesg.log
sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log
sudo dmidecode > dmidecode.log

+ i have something new to report. now the os shuts off everything but the
boob tube and power supply. interestingly enough leaving the suspend
indicator led not blinking but solid on. disk drives are off and nothing but
a hyphen on-screen. go figure. i'm going to remove from windows an install
as seperate system now.

2009-08-16 Thread wowflash
i installed, reinstalled, and tried several version releases including
latest beta. can't remember which silly name it's called. anyhow i gave up.
it's gotta be a hardware dependent problem. in fact i got so tired of
fighting wireless driver problem i paid twenty bucks to linuxtant for a
solution. it was still a pain the ass to install but at least it works.

ubuntu isn't ready for prime time. you can get a cheap windows 7 license on
ebay and you'll be all set. i'm too old for geek stuff. i'll keep ubuntu
around to play with on a really boring day.

thanks for writing,
