[Bug 237151] [NEW] CFS/Hardy: cattach fails with "RPC: Unable to receive"
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: cfs I recently upgraded [in quick stages] from Dapper to Hardy. I've just tried to mount my CFS share, and it fails with the error "RPC: Unable to receive". This is with the latest version of CFS. I see a reference here [http://bugs.debian.org/cgi- bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=366929] to a similar problem in Debian, but no resolution. I notice also that it doesn't matter if I mistype my passphrase; I get the same error, rather than an error about the passphrase mismatch. I tried running "sudo /etc/init.d/cfsd restart". That made my system unresponsive for about a minute each time I did it, and gave only this output: "Restarting Cryptographic File System daemon: Stopping Cryptographic File System daemon: start-stop-daemon: warning: failed to kill 8996: No such process 1 pids were not killed No process in pidfile `/var/run/cfs.pid' found running; none killed. cfsd. Starting Cryptographic File System daemon: cfsd." It seems that the lack of responsiveness was likely the result of memory pressure. I saw [running top] that exportfs was taking as much as 76% of my memory, and say kswapd get active as well. In /var/log/messages, I see this [from 3 attempts at the cfsd restart]: May 18 16:55:07 Slick kernel: [ 4469.121951] exportfs[8998]: segfault at b7fc8000 eip b7ee49bc esp bff98e8c error 4 May 18 17:00:44 Slick kernel: [ 4895.551412] exportfs[9225]: segfault at b7fa9000 eip b7ec59bc esp bfee6ddc error 4 May 18 17:05:41 Slick kernel: [ 5288.779912] exportfs[9454]: segfault at b7f82000 eip b7e9e9bc esp bfbf3aec error 4 ** Affects: cfs (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- CFS/Hardy: cattach fails with "RPC: Unable to receive" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/237151 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 216323] Re: CFS error blocks dist upgrade to 7.10
Hmm; this was a while ago now, so I can't be absolutely sure, but I'm pretty confident that there was no popup. It just hung without any notification. /etc/exports rings a faint bell, but I did 3 dist- upgrades in the space of 2 days, so that may not mean much [I've now gone from 6.06 to 8.04]. -- CFS error blocks dist upgrade to 7.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/216323 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 216323] [NEW] CFS error blocks dist upgrade to 7.10
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: update-manager I was trying to dist-upgrade to 7.10 via the update manager. I'd just updated to 7.04 the previous day. In the "installing the upgrades" phase, it stuck on handling CFS. I don't know why, but cfs.postinst just seemed to sit there indefinitely, making no progress and giving no output. After 5-10 minutes of waiting for it, I just killed it and let the update continue. It later stuck on exim, with 3 processes of exim4-base.post running, apparently doing nothing. I killed them, and the installation continued. Later in the update, I got this in the update window: Setting up scim-modules-table (0.5.7-1ubuntu2) ... Setting up scim-tables-additional (0.5.7-1ubuntu2) ... Processing triggers for libc6 ... ldconfig deferred processing now taking place Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ... update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-14-386 Errors were encountered while processing: cfs Traceback (most recent call last): File "logging/__init__.py", line 753, in emit File "logging/__init__.py", line 731, in flush IOError: [Errno 9] Bad file descriptor gutsy: Fatal IO error 9 (Bad file descriptor) on X server :0.0. Setting up cfs (1.4.1-18) ... I then got an error popup about CFS, and the overall update claimed to have failed, and that it was going to do some cleanup to make sure I wasn't in an invalid state. However, so far [10 minutes?], I've seen no further output or activity, so it looks like it's hung. [Bug 1900265] [NEW] do-release-upgrade freezes
Public bug reported: I'm trying to upgrade from Bionic to Fossa; I've had several problems with do-release-upgrade that may all stem from the same issue. I run "sudo update-manager" at the command line. The system alerts me of a potential upgrade: "The software on this computer is up to date. However, Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS is now available (you have 18.04)." I click "Upgrade..." I pops up the release notes window, but never populates it; it stays empty, but otherwise correctly drawn, offering "Cancel" and "Upgrade". In the command-line window is: uranium@Hex:~$ sudo update-manager [sudo] password for uranium: Checking for a new Ubuntu release /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/DistUpgrade/DistUpgradeFetcher.py:23: PyGIWarning: Gtk was imported without specifying a version first. Use gi.require_version('Gtk', '3.0') before import to ensure that the right version gets loaded. from gi.repository import Gtk, Gdk /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/DistUpgrade/ReleaseNotesViewerWebkit.py:33: PyGIWarning: WebKit2 was imported without specifying a version first. Use gi.require_version('WebKit2', '4.0') before import to ensure that the right version gets loaded. from gi.repository import WebKit2 as WebKit Gtk-Message: 09:10:22.336: GtkDialog mapped without a transient parent. This is discouraged. If I accept the upgrade anyway, despite that, it pops up another window that appears to run do-release-upgrade and say it's downloading something, before vanishing and being replace by one with the title "Distribution Upgrade". That one doesn't draw properly--other than the title bar, it's blank, and just grabs whatever's behind it, or whatever was on a different desktop if I flip back and forth. On the command line is: authenticate 'focal.tar.gz' against 'focal.tar.gz.gpg' extracting 'focal.tar.gz' It never gets any further. If I click the close box, it hangs. Eventually Metacity offers to kill it, which I accept. Nothing happens in the command line when I do. Eventually I control-C it, and get this: ^CTraceback (most recent call last): File "/tmp/ubuntu-release-upgrader-mv88pmez/focal", line 8, in sys.exit(main()) File "/tmp/ubuntu-release-upgrader-mv88pmez/DistUpgrade/DistUpgradeMain.py", line 235, in main save_system_state(logdir) File "/tmp/ubuntu-release-upgrader-mv88pmez/DistUpgrade/DistUpgradeMain.py", line 134, in save_system_state universal_newlines=True).communicate()[0] File "/usr/lib/python3.6/subprocess.py", line 850, in communicate stdout = self.stdout.read() KeyboardInterrupt If instead I try to initiate the upgrade myself with do-release-upgrade, I get this: uranium@Hex:~$ sudo do-release-upgrade --allow-third-party Checking for a new Ubuntu release Get:1 Upgrade tool signature [1,554 B] Get:2 Upgrade tool [1,336 kB] Fetched 1,338 kB in 0s (0 B/s) authenticate 'focal.tar.gz' against 'focal.tar.gz.gpg' extracting 'focal.tar.gz' Reading cache And then it never gets any further. [Bug 1900265] Re: do-release-upgrade freezes
OK, this problem is elsewhere. I started trying to upgrade because I was getting lockups on suspend as of having taken some updates--probably the wrong reaction, if e.g. a newer kernel is the problem. While debugging this upgrade problem, I also found lots of other ways to lock up my system [running lspci -k, starting the settings app, ...]. I've just tried booting into an older kernel [4.15.0-112 instead of 4.15.0-121] and suddenly everything works. Release notes show up, the upgrade seems happy to run. I haven't done the upgrade yet--might want to try a live-thumbdrive of the newer version to see if the kernel problem's there or not. But it's not the updater. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1900265 Title: do-release-upgrade freezes To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bug/1900265/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
