I confirm that networkmanager does not start the lo interface when I'm
using a static IP configuration on eth1 (at work). This causes several
GTK applications, including firefox, to be extremely slow. When using
the wireless (wlan0, at home), lo is started automatically and I don't
have this problem. The problem can be fixed with a simple 'sudo ifup lo'

This problem happened recently (~2 weeks ago), and might be linked to an
update.

The program sequin (used to prepare DNA sequence submission to NCBI) is install 
with the package ncbi-tools-x11. On Dapper (32 or 64bit) it does not work:

Couldn't find X visual appropriate for OpenGL!

If I try to use the binary distributed by NCBI but it neither works, this time 
with a different error message:

I don't have any problem to see and connect to wireless network manually. But 
weirdly the network-manager applet won't display the available wireless

I had a similar problem: upgrade my kubuntu dapper to edgy, and then
Xorg complained about unavailable drivers.

I fixed it by running:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and selected 'nvidia' intead of 'nv' in the driver section.

  running on battery now...
