[Bug 77010] Re: Overuse of system beep without volume control

2009-06-29 Thread tgpraveen
while i agree that if a speaker or headphone is attached then the use of
system beep should be minimised and used only in high priority cases.

BUT if there are no speakers or headphones attached then the current
settings should be place.

so if i do

cpufreq-selector -g performance

then it solves the problem but cpu freq scaling is lost. pls solve this

[Bug 388508] Re: Ctrl+Tab to change tab in Nautilus

2009-07-22 Thread tgpraveen
Similar bugs have been filed for empathy, gnome terminal, etc and all
have been rejected as they go against GNOME HIG.

There is a nice page on current tab implementations in various gnome
programs on gnome live.

i also feel a standard should be maintained and hence if ctrl+tab is to
be it we should change the HIG and everything else will follow but i
doubt it will be easy to convince the gnome devs.maybe for gnome 3.

but we should not go against upstream on this.

a desktop needs uniformity.

what is the use of having a2dp support and dun support etc when such
basic functionality is broked.

sending is supported but not receiving. does nobody think this is a HUGE

[Bug 518345] Re: No longer authorized to mount USB disks

2010-02-16 Thread tgpraveen
hmm update. i am getting this bug again.
it occurs with all external harddisks, pen drives, interal harddisks (like my
windows partition).

nautilius shows all these drives but gives error in mounting hence cant
open them.

one workaround is that always when starting the system if i select the earlier
kernel ie 2.6.31-13 i think it always works perfectly and then restart and
select the latest kernel ie -14 (maybe it was -12 working and -13 problematic
but which ever is latest is problematic) it works the first time. but then if i
restart again then it wont work with the latest kernel.
this is why i am now preferinng to boot into earlier kernel itself.

the bug is weird indeed.
pls tell me what other info i can provide.

it seems there might be some similarity with
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/518533.

[Bug 485486] Re: blackberry pearl does support playlists and album art

2009-11-24 Thread tgpraveen
hmm doesnt work. here's what happens.

1. after adding that information, in banshee it still says "Supports
playlists:no" and cant do anything in banshee.

2. In rhythmbox, it now does allow me to create playlists, and i created
a new one say "praveen" and added some songs, then when i disconnect my
blackberry and use my phone's music player , it shows the new playlists
it even shows the song names in the playlists correctly but it shows all
songs as of length 00:00 and cant play them. it's like it is not able to
find the files i guess.

3. then after creating playlist using the phone's music player say "bb"
and then connecting to rythmbox and opening the phone it shows a
playlist as bb.m3u. but again in rhythmbox the playlist comes as
completely empty and doesn't show any of the songs i added to it via the
phone. also this time the "praveen" playlist wasn't displayed in
rhythmbox.

thanks.

also found some more info, rhythmbox creates the playlist at location /Media

the phone's music player creates playlist at location /Media

dont know if this makes a difference.
both are indeed .m3u files so probably our playlist type is correct.

[Bug 428509] Re: Do not suppress sync notifications when using fullscreen apps

2009-09-12 Thread tgpraveen
Please do reverse this. It is annoying and causes a lot of problems for
users as we miss important IM messages and we have no idea when i missed
it until after i have say finished a movie.

In ayatana Ml we were discussing this and DND mdoe solution was the
best, though now the discussion regarding this is not happening.

So someone from the developer team of notify-osd please tell us what is
the status?

[Bug 485486] Re: blackberry pearl does support playlists and album art

Does the playlist work on the device if you remove all the paths and
just keep the file names?

NO.

But adding file:///SDCard in front of the file path of the playlist
produced by RB does work.

so this should be the only method. and a fix should be added to do this?

[Bug 33288] Re: Evince doesn't handle columns properly

2010-03-17 Thread tgpraveen
I really hope that this bug is fixed for Lucid by Ubuntu people as it
will probably not be fixed by evince folks in time for lucid.

This is a really annoying bug and one that really brings down the
usefulness of evince a lot.

to just put into perspective how annoying this bug is, this same feature
was added in OSX for Leopard release and it's release page lists new
feature and this feature was also amongst the few features highlighted.

2010-03-17 Thread tgpraveen
@Brian

are there any problems with comitting this patch in it's current form. I mean
any known regressions?
else we should just include it in ubuntu's evince for now atleast and then
revert back at beta 2 or something if something goes wrong.
Because from what u say it is going to be a long while before this gets fixed
upstream.

@Arand

Am now using your ppa and things going to be going well. Thanks for
making the ppa. it really makes a lot more testing possible.

[Bug 516189] Re: gnome-appearance-properties crashed with SIGSEGV in main()

2010-02-05 Thread tgpraveen
I was having a lot of problems with my graphics system.
And i was getting this error.
the problem (or one of the problems) was that compiz was not starting up.
so i added compiz --replace in list of startup applications and now everything
works well.
So the bug probably exists, but i cant reproduce anymore.
My system was upgraded from Karmic and i have NVidia card. maybe that was the
source of problems.

[Bug 472895] [NEW] dont ask for password on mounting local disks

2009-11-03 Thread tgpraveen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: policykit

If i autologin to my sytem then please dont ask for password on mounting local
disks. This is hardly necessary and definetely not a security threat.

Or atleast allow a option like always allow or something.

Really this is irritating and ruing the whole experience.

/me thinks this is one of the type of things which makes people hate
Vista.

OS: Ubuntu
version: 9.10
in 9.04 ubuntu this problem was not there, then i formatted and reinstalled
9.10
and now when ever i try to mount a local disk (my ntfs partition containing
windows) in ubuntu then it tells me authentication reqd to maount disk.

If i cancel on the dialog as shown in the picture then it doesnt mount
it,

Re: [Bug 428509] Re: Do not suppress async notifications when using fullscreen apps

2009-10-13 Thread tgpraveen
While it is too late to do anything about this in the Karmic cycle, I must
protest the way this issue was handled. First, this issue was discussed in
Ayatana in detail. And a sensible conclusion that everyone seemed to come to
after discussing all possible cases was DND mode + not hiding notifications
in fullscreen apps by default.
But yet, it seems the developers didn't heed this advice and then turned off
notifications without giving user with a DND mode.

Various people have discussed various usecases on the Ayatana mailing list.
And no particular use case must be given extra preference. having said that,
the presentation use case is actually something that a minority of the
people are going to experience. various people use apps like pdf readers,
movies, browsers in fullscreen especially with the advent of small screen
netbooks.

So, all I would say is that the way this issue was handled was definitely
not right. and in future if something is so actively discussed, like this
was in Ayatana list or anywhere else, then it might be best to use that
advice or give a sane rationale not to. And definitely not implement it half
baked.

in the nautilius side panel of places, I can't differentiate between usb
hdds, filesystem partition, ntfs local disks in humanity.

in human theme for eg the usb symbol was prominently visible. But right now if

Re: [Bug 428509] Re: Do not suppress async notifications when using fullscreen apps

2009-10-03 Thread tgpraveen
I think mac_v makes correct points.
This bug should be given high priority and resolved ASAP Imho else it will
become a really big annoyance of karmic.

I really dont understand why it was decided to go for this behaviour in the
first place. In ayatana ml this topic was discussed in detail and the
decision reached was

*Show notifications by default in fullscreen apps
*Have a DND mode where notifications are not sent.

If all this could not have been done for karmic, then the issue should not
have been touched at all.

In conclusion, missing IM's,emails, etc while watching movies, etc is a use
case which is more concerning and something which is likely to happen more
often to more no. of users. rather than the pretty limited use case of
someone giving a presentation while having IM enabled.

[Bug 491531] Re: Evince uses too much memory

2010-01-03 Thread tgpraveen
I would also recommend elevating the importance of this bug from Low to
Medium. Try testing it on a computer with 512mb memory or less and see
what happens. In comparison the minimum system requirements are set to
384mb RAM (see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements).
Reading documents is a fairly basic task as far as I see it.

+1 indeed.

[Bug 487947] Re: fingerprint reader/webcam found message post install

2010-01-16 Thread tgpraveen
i disagree. though i am not a coder i think that this is a small bug
which can be easily fixed by sending out a notification when the new
hardware is detected for first time.

and it is a usability issue as many people dont know that their
fingerprint reader/ webcam is detected and working in linux. the
notification might also tell user how to set it up/ or start using it.

it will definetely improve the overall expeerience.

and many people to switch to linux from windows miss this feature.

yeah doing work for considering deletion would be over engineering.

if the account is deleted doesnt mean that person doesnt exist anymore and if
the account was created in the first place maybe one would communicate with
that person/reference him/her so having the name in spell check would be good.

[Bug 406759] Re: Users should "apply" a wallpaper to have it changed

2009-11-13 Thread tgpraveen
Please dont change the behaviour of instantaneous change when clicking
on the wallpaper and even if u still introduce a delay make it not more
than 1 sec so that we never even realize a delay exists.

if the concern is that current wallpaper is lost then maybe a apply
changes button could be present in the dialog where after all changes
are previewed it can be clicked to apply forever else just exit without
any modifications.

Please dont completely remove this "feature".
My use case, when i have a slightly corrupted CD/DVD/usb disk and i am copying
a big video file from it to my pc, on windows it gets stuck in middle gives
error and i cant view any of it.
In ubuntu, atleast some part of the file is copied and then error is given out,
and i can still view a portion of the video which is great i think.

[Bug 407621] Re: (design decision) Icons missing from context menu , dialogue buttons , firefox bookmark favicons, system menu

2009-10-18 Thread tgpraveen
@mpt while on the whole i agree removing icons was a good idea as it
makes for a cleaner interface

but this as said in a previous comment really needs to be made a special
case and allow icons for this.

"Me too. For example Close button is probably the most widely used
button in all windows, but now it have no icon. Previously I could click
it without thinking, but now... well, this is disaster, I'm completly
inefficient. "

[Bug 446146] Re: Huawei E169 USB dongle not working with kernel 2.6.31-12.40

2009-10-18 Thread tgpraveen
Please get this in karmic final itself and NOT as an SRU.

I am sure there are many people like me who depend on 3g modems for net
connection and after i install Karmic and then it doesn't work. We'll be
stuck. Especially for the new comers it will make a very abd impression.
