[Bug 244757] [NEW] 8800 GTS Knockout exition hangs after compiling binary driver and restricted drive. Whole system hangs but runs fine with default NV driver. Board: NF44XA7COMBVGA1 BIO STAR

2008-07-01 Thread Steve
Public bug reported:

Default NV driver works fine with 8800 GTS but when I try to compile
kernel module computer completely hangs after reboot and have to hit
the reset button on box and boot into recovery mode.

When trying to compile 173.14.09 nvidia kernel module is successfull.
Update xorg using their utility is successful.

Computer crashes right before the password prompt after reboot black
screen monitor looses signal input form graphic card.

hardy heron has been completely updated and still fails to boot when
nvidia kernel module is loaded. It doesn't matter if it's from the .RUN
file or form restricted driver. Computer still crashes the same.

Computer hung exactly the same in Gusty Gibbon but passed with Open SUSE 11

Nvidia driver works with GeForce 7 Card with binary . RUN driver and Open GL
and Compiz runs fine.

I have attached a bug report form nvidas driver.

[Bug 105899] Re: KNetworkManager Should Support "Key Type" Selection under WPA Enterprise

2008-11-28 Thread steve.
Hmm. deja vu...

The option to select TKIP was in Gutsy :)
The option to select TKIP was missing when Hardy was released. :(

The option to select TKIP was put back into Hardy. :)
The option to select TKIP was missing when Intrepid was released. :(

Is this just co-incidence or a pattern?

The option to select TKIP is still missing in Intrepid :(

TKIP is sad about being forgotten after performing so well in Gutsy and
being snubbed by not being invited to the launch of Hardy or Intrepid.

TKIP would like to remembered and welcomed back into Intrepid and not
miss out on the launch of Jaunty.

[Bug 384590] [NEW] Hard system crash with nvidia 173 drivers

2009-06-07 Thread Steve
Public bug reported:

I have recently installed 9.04 on an older P3 machine that I have an
nvidia GeForce FX5200 video card. Everytime I load the nvidia
proprietary driver 173, which is recommended, the system reboots and
sometimes will allow me to log back in and sometimes just goes to a
blank screen. When I am able to get logged into ubuntu it crashes and
usually has to be powered down to try and get back into ubuntu. I am
currently running the new install of 9.04 without the nvidia drivers and
it is working fine, is there another nvidia driver that is recommended
to be used? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Is the driver available on the Ubuntu site or the nVidia site. When I go
to the nVidia site and pull up my particular video card for Linux OS 32
bit it give you the 173.14.XX file to down load as the proper driver.

[Bug 379172] [NEW] Seahorse doesn't distinguish subkey usage types

2009-05-21 Thread Steve
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: seahorse

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04

seahorse:
  Installed: 2.26.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.26.1-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 2.26.1-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

After reading the GNU Privacy Gaurd manual for wisdom on key expiration,
I found the recommendation to use a never expiring signing key, paired
with an expiring encryption subkey that can then be replaced at will.

This was, of course, quite easy. When I do a gpg --edit-key on my key, I see
the following:
pub 4096R/472EBFF2 created: 2009-05-21 expires: never usage: SC
 trust: ultimate validity: ultimate
sub 4096R/C05B2CE2 created: 2009-05-21 expires: 2010-06-21 usage: E
[ultimate] (1). Stephen J. Carpenter

However, in seahorse, there is no distinction at all between the signing
key and the encryption key. Specifically I am looking at the properties
of the key in question, looking on the Owner and details tabs.

In fact, as I created the key as an RSA signing key, the use under the "Owner"
tab read:
"Use: Decrypt files and email sent to you"

This was even before the encrypting subkey was created, even though gpg
clearly recognizes the key as a signing key.

[Bug 349312] Re: Evolution 2.26 does not support import of outlook .pst

2009-05-22 Thread Steve
If you're just now migrating from a Windows/Outlook environment, you
could always use Crossover Office from Codeweavers which enables you to
run Outlook 2003 directly under linux using a Wine compatibility layer.
I ran this for a while until I was able to move away from
Outlook/Exchange and found most of the time it ran quicker than Outlook
under Windows.

I know it's not the best or most linux native solution but until .pst
importing into Evolution or whatever is properly supported it's probably
the easiest way to go.

[Bug 255161] Re: I am unable to print from open office, I tried reinstalling open office but it did not work. I use a brother mfc240c printer and I am running Hardy. Printing from other apps has not b

2009-04-27 Thread Steve
What a fascinating bug!! My wife has complained that open office will
never print on Tuesdays!?! Then she demonstrated it. Sure enough,
won't print on Tuesday. Other applications print. I think this is the
same bug. Here is my guess:

Print to a postscript file. Observe the line:
   %%CreationDate: (Tue Mar 3 19:47:42 2009)

Change "Tue" to anything else:
   %%CreationDate: (XTue Mar 3 19:47:42 2009)

Save the file and it prints. Tools like evince work because they simply
omit the "CreationDate" tag to begin with.

Now something odd happens when my cups script (I am using the Brother
MFC420CN) copies the file to a temp file. Some of the code is
rearranged, not sure how or why, but it uses a command called "file" to
identify the file as "PostScript". This check would work on the
original file you printed, but by the time it runs the check on the temp
file, it misidentifies. Normally it would return:

PostScript document text conforming at level 3.0

But there is another check that happens before the PostScript check. If
it finds "Tue" at the fourth byte of the file, it identifies it as:

   Jan 22 14:32:44 MET 1991\011Erlang JAM file - version 4.2

So it's not a problem w/ openoffice.org, cups, or the brother printer
drivers. It is a bug in the `file` utility, and documented at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/file/+bug/248619.

Now, I cannot recommend a fix, but here is my workaround hack:
make a change in file /usr/local/Brother/lpd/filterMFC420CN

change:
  cat > $INPUT_TEMP

to:
  cat | sed -e 's/^%%CreationDate: (Tue/%%CreationDate: (tue/' > $INPUT_TEMP

This will identify a pattern that matches "%%CreationDate: (Tue" at the
start of a line, and change "Tue" to "tue".

--
I am unable to print from open office, I tried reinstalling open office but it
did not work. I use a brother mfc240c printer and I am running Hardy. Printing
from other apps has not been an issue.

[Bug 294927] [NEW] Doc Bug in various spreadsheet functions

2008-11-06 Thread steve
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Doc reports (both in online help and built in help) that the syntax for
LOOKUP function is:

=LOOKUP(P1;P2:P3;P4:P5)

The semicolons are correct for OOo 2.4, but incorrect for 3.0. 3.0 uses
the MS Excel format of commas to separate fields:

=LOOKUP(P1,P2:P3,P4:P5)

3.0's documentation on this point appears to be a carryover from 2.x.

Re: [Bug 287617] Re: very low wireless signal

2008-10-22 Thread steve!
yes it works fine in vista, but in ubuntu even when very close to the
router it sits at about 20-30% signal and at the farthest point which is
across the room in my studio apartment it is even lower. in 8.04 it
worked fine with the built in network adapter, also i have never got the
pcmcia card to work even before the upgrade, it is the bcm43xg

Is your wireless signal stronger when using Windows Vista when you are
the same distance from your wireless access point?

[Bug 247327] [NEW] System crashes when rectangular selecting on desktop

2008-07-10 Thread Steve
Public bug reported:

When dragging rectangles on the desktop (and sometimes when creating a
new folder/file), they screen freezes, flickers, goes black, and shows
some form of a console that takes keyboard input but does not appear to
accept commands (I'm new to this).

Possibly caused by ATI drivers; reproducible at will on my system.

Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron.

[Bug 247925] [NEW] glxinfo glx vedor string incorrect

2008-07-12 Thread steve
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mesa-utils

I have installed the proprietary fglrx drivers, and they are working
correctly. The command fglrxinfo is correct, but glxinfo is incorrect:

$ fglrxinfo
  display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI MOBILITY RADEON X300
  OpenGL version string: 2.1.7412 Release

$ glxinfo | head -n5
  name of display: :0.0
  display: :0 screen: 0
  direct rendering: Yes
  server glx vendor string: SGI
  server glx version string: 1.2

glxinfo is reporting the vendor as SGI. This is a bug because some
applications (e.g. flash) use the glx vendor string to determine if
hardware support is available
(http://blogs.adobe.com/penguin.swf/2008/05/flash_uses_the_gpu.html).
If the output of the vendor string is SGI, it assumes that hardware
support is not enabled.

I am running Ubuntu 8.04
mesa-utils version Installed: 7.0.3~rc2-1ubuntu3

I suspected this was an upgrade problem so did a reinstall (keeping my

some setting somewhere, suggestions welcome.

[Bug 242244] [NEW] Apps in notifcation bar are no longer moved to current workspace on click

2008-06-22 Thread Steve
Public bug reported:

Note this is similar to bug #238958, but affects all apps in the
notification area:

To reproduce:

* Fire up any app that enables closing to notification bar (confirmed with
Banshee, Exaile, Liferea, Gajim)
* Open on workspace
* Move to another workspace
* Click app notification icon

Result:
* Nothing happens

Desired result:
* App raised on current workspace

This used to be the behavior in gutsy, the behaviour changed after
upgrade to hardy. This is on amd64 arch.

[Bug 214556] Re: [Hardy] Can't share files

2008-05-21 Thread steve
I have been using ubuntu for years now. I have had an interesting experience
with Hardy and file sharing. My home network if fairly complicated - I have a
seanix pentium 4 1.5gb ram dual harddrive which dual boots xp / ubuntu. My new
desktop = dell amd dual core 2gb ram dual boot vista/ubuntu. I have an old sony
vaio laptop with ext cdrom, running ubuntu. My wife has a lenovo laptop running
xp and a dell desktop running vista home premium. Needless to say I have spent
days, weeks, maybe months keeping everything working over the last several
years with each upgrade - I am a ubuntu junky. The old desktop(Seanix) has been
my file server for the rest of the house actually running xp with ubuntu
7.10(most recently) in a vmware virtual machine as the actual file server -
lastest version all working well was gutsy. By working well, I mean every
computer had access to our photos and music and movie collection with no
password and my wife and I both had home folders available on all the machines
with password protection. The only reason my server ran xp with virtual ubuntu
was my old printer wouldn't work with ubuntu, nor would my scanner.
My printer broke so I got a new one, I got a new scanner -carefully choosen to
work with linux.
So now is the time to get rid of the last of windows.
I downloaded hardy heron i386 desktop and burned one cd.
I installed it on my newer Dell desktop to try it out. Printer, scanner work
and share. File sharing works out of the box. All looks great.
So I use the same install cd on the Seanix, Install hardy heron on its own
partition with a separate partition for the home folder. AND file sharing is
broken. Non of the folders are shared properly, even the ubuntu machines don't
share well any more. I got all of the error messages about net usershare =
permission denied etc. I learned about net usershare.I edited my
smb.conf(repeatedly) I did the logout/login and even reboot suggestions and
still NO proper sharing. I tried all combinations of sharing options after R
clicking nautilus folders. There seemed no rhyme or reason to what happened.
Allow guest = still need password, no guest - everyone had access to my home
folder.

It is interesting that some users install hardy and everything works out
of the box. Other install hardy and have a nightmare with sharing. I
have had both - the only difference being the machine that I installed
hardy on.

I am not a computer expert, but I hope that this information gets into the
hands of someone who can make some sense of it.
I have now reinstalled Gutsy on the Seanix - file server and my home network is
back to HAPPY with all working well.

I would be pleased to send any specific information about the machines,
installation, or anything else if someone with the knowhow can help sort out
this problem.
I am now windows free but would like to have hardy running on all my machines.
Thanks for your patience with this long post - I hope that it helps ubuntu and
hardy improve.

[Bug 230157] [NEW] gateway laptop freezes when lid closed

2008-05-13 Thread Steve
Public bug reported:

Gateway MT3422 laptop running Ubuntu 8.04, Nvidia graphics driver.

Freezes when I close the laptop lid, when set to "blank screen".
Need to press ctrl-alt-backspace to get display back.
Pressing ctrl-alt-F1 causes permanent freeze (need to turn off / on)
Suspend works fine. Brightness controls (Fn-Up, Fn-Down) don't work.

Attempting to hibernate caused the system to completely freeze, had to
power off. Hopefully the log file still contains useful information.

[Bug 230156] Re: gateway laptop runs hot, fan not detected

2008-05-14 Thread Steve
This may be related to another bug I submitted, where the laptop freezes when
the lid is closed, or when set to hibernate.
See bug #230157 for the appropriate acpi-related attachments.

[Bug 230982] [NEW] no sound - Alsamixer

2008-05-15 Thread Steve
Public bug reported:

At my laptop i've no sound, not in ubuntu 7.10 and also not in ubuntu
8.04.

When I run a dmesg command I see the following output:

201050] ALSA /build/buildd/linux-ubuntu-
modules-2.6.24-2.6.24/debian/build/build-generic/sound/alsa-
driver/pci/hda/../../alsa-kernel/pci/hda/hda_intel.c:1470: SPDIF already
defined

When I open the sound control panel (system --> preferences --> sound), I see
there a device realtek ALC268 (OSS Mixer)

So I think ubuntu detects my sound card, but when I open alsamixer in a
console I get the following error:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ alsamixer
ALSA lib simple_none.c:1741:(simple_add1) helem (MIXER,'Headphone Playback
Switch',0,2,0) appears twice or more

alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: Invalid argument

My laptop specifications: http://users.telenet.be/bibawa/mylaptop.html

Thanks!

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2008-05-28 Thread steve
Dear John Kuang,
thanks for the solution!

>if you bookmark any windows server (eg. smb://server ) that requires
password in nautilus, you will SLOW DOWN your save/save as/open dialogs
in programs such as gimp, openoffice, and practically any gtk programs.

The content of my .gtk-bookmarks was this:
/media

This causes that any gtk application can not save. Not slowly, in no way.
The error was only at one user, so it seems to be a config problem, but i could
not find any solution, until now... :)
If i clear the content of the file, everything works: openoffice, gimp can save
(which is sometimes useful :))

Thanks again,
Steve

And now all works..

[Bug 253937] Re: Local login fails without LDAP server

2008-08-06 Thread Steve
Hi,

the thing is, that I've already tried setting those timeouts. And there
was no result at all. The "lookup" time didn't change.

Wouldn't it be a lot more intelligent in libnss-ldap to do a *one-time*
check if the LDAP server is reachable, and if not there's just no
output. Just something simple like a ping. Only local files will be
used.

This is the behaviour I expected to happen -- no server, no data.
Simple. Short.

Cheers

[Bug 218083] Re: Wrong email displayed

2009-02-02 Thread Steve
It's definately an Thunderbird indexing problem. I have the same problem
occur regularly with Thunderbird on Windows (2.0.0.19). Seems to occur
mostly (for me) with IMAP folders that are set to be available for
offline use. Deleting the .msf files, or selecting Re-index from the
folder properties fixes the issue, but is a real pain because the re-
indexing removes all of the tags I use to categorize each email.

[Bug 263963] Re: [iwl*] intel drivers take overly long to associate to WPA for some hardware

2009-01-08 Thread steve.
Using gconf-editor to remove the ccmp entries worked for me too. :)

This is the first time I've been able to connect to wpa enterprise with
tkip in Intrepid :)

On all the notebooks I've tried wpa enterprise with tkip was working
perfectly under Hardy but failed under Intrepid.

[Bug 297143] Re: Xorg eats processor cycles while waiting for slow Internet

2008-12-25 Thread Steve
same problem here, only happens when thunderbird is running

Linux steve 2.6.27-9-generic #1 SMP Thu Nov 20 21:57:00 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
Cpu usage:
x-org = 40%
thunderbird = 40%

Thunderbird does exhibit strange behavior. The slider bar on folders(rss
feeds) will not allow you to move it up or down. As soon as you try it
pops back to original position. System will not resume normal operation
until thunderbird is closed. Seems like it might be a thunderbird issue?

[Bug 239679] Re: broken dependency

2008-06-13 Thread Steve
I am having this same issue, and have attached sources.list. Netbeans
was working fine after upgrade to hardy 8.04, but last week there was an
upgrade that caused all of netbeans and java to be uninstalled, and when
i try to reinstall i get the error described by the original poster.

Let me know if i can supply an additional info. FYI i am not a very
experienced user but will try to do my best.

thanks,

It might be in firefox. I will just avoid doing what
I did, I'm not a "get into the terminal and know what
to do person." I'm a download the fix type of person.
Thank you for looking into the problem, John.
