Installed the new firefox and xulrunner packages from the ubuntu repos this morning. The issue still remains. This is very strange, as others running the same version of ubuntu have no problems with this. Oh man, Thanks Iain! I had the exact same setup as you (had previously
been using ff3beta prior to upgrading to Hardy).
I followed your suggestions, removing everything firefox from the system
("find / -name firefox*" is your friend). Back to normal.

tarball of /etc/firefox-3.0/ is attached. Note that if I blow away /etc/firefox-3.0/ and start firefox, the problem still persists.
