[Bug 127790] Re: Hardy, Intrepid Alpha 2+ take 30 seconds to start boot sequence on MacBook / Pro

2008-07-28 Thread oss_test_launchpad
I have five questions:

1. Would the use of ELILO fully solve this problem?
2. Why doesn't the Ubuntu installation routine offer the use of ELILO?
3. I read somewhere that the main problem is that the notebook's EFI looks for
a HFS partition first. Could HFS partitioning be implemented as an option
during the update process?
4. Why is there hardly any progress on the various MacBook Pro related issues
in launchpad?
5. Why can't you install rEFIt on all Mac Book Pros?

[Bug 252683] [NEW] [Intrepid Alpha 3] Ubuntu might ruin fan on Acer TravelMate 6292 notebook

2008-07-28 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

Testing Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 3 on an Acer TravelMate 6292-602G25MN, I
noticed that the fan is accelerating and decelerating about 15 times per
minute. It turns to what probably is full speed when you start something
like OpenOffice.org as the only program. When you just browse the web
(using firefox), it accelerates and decelerates all the time, too. This
even happens if you have turned everything on "always run full power" in
GNOME's energy saving preferences.

I suppose that the fan won't live long under these conditions.

Why doesn't the fan work at a constant, temperature-safe speed?

2008-07-29 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Seems you are unwilling to optimize the process which makes it useless
for probably a great number of users to report any bugs. Seems that also
you are unwilling to take this seriously. Therefore I am closing this.

@ Chris Coulson: You are getting a lot of email traffic because there is
a problem. You would not get any mails regarding this topic if there was
no problem. So the easiest way of getting no more mails regarding this
problem would be to solve it.

[Bug 261573] [NEW] No "@" symbol with MacBook Pro

2008-08-26 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pommed

Testing with Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 4. Manually changed System -> Preferences
-> Keyboard to "Apple: MacBook / MacBook Pro (Intel)", but no change.
Apparently Ubuntu does not know what to do with the key second right to
the space key (the key right next to the space key is the "Apple" key
which also is right left to the space key) which should probably do the
job of the AltGr key.

Fn - ctrl - alt - Apple key - SPACE - Apple key - strange key which
probably should do the job of AltGr - < key etc.

Note that normally on modern Macs you get the "@" symbol pressing some
key + the letter "l" key. At the moment, with Ubuntu, things work
neither the Mac way nor the usual PC way. (I suppose it would be useful
to use the PC way.)

This goes for a German keyboard tested. I assume it's the same with
other languages' keyboards (English keyboards have th "@" on "q", too,
right?).

[Bug 261780] [NEW] MacBook Pro: No square brackets - wrong keyboard layout

2008-08-27 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

On a German PC keyboard, usually square brackets are produced as
follows:

AltGr + 8: squared bracket open
AltGr + 9: squared bracket close.

MacBooks Pros have no printed indication on the keys how to produce
square brackets (AFAIK this goes for all models), so I assumed you could
produce them the PC way.

I assumed that the key second right to the space key (= the one left
from the LeftArrow key - you can see this nicely on

function of the "AltGr" key you know from PCs. However, when I press
this key whose name I don't know, plus "8" or "9", I get no square
brackets. Instead, this key works as "Return" key.

This goes for Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 4, fully updated. Ubuntu installed, then

MacBook Pro is a rev. 3 one.

[Bug 216465] Re: [Hardy] public Samba SMB shares cannot be accessed anonymously from Windows XP

2008-08-27 Thread oss_test_launchpad
I confirm this bug for Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 4+. Trying to connect to a
company SMB network server share. Nautilus tells me:

Could not display "smb://servername/myshare$/" - Einhängen des Ortes nicht
möglich.

This worked ok when I used 8.04. However, nautilus shows the share as
mounted (gets a shortcut on the left side, as a cd would which has been
inserted into a local drive). When I press the "eject" (unmount) button
for this share, I sometimes get the following error message:

Could not display "smb://servername/myshare$/". Fehler: DBus error
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.InvalidArgs: Mountpoint Already registered - Bitte
wählen Sie einen anderen Betrachter und versuchen Sie es erneut.

I entered my account data the first time I tried to connect. Strangely enough,
in the properties you can see how many files there are on this share and how
much data there is all in all, but the file list cannot be displayed.

[Bug 261573] Re: No "@" symbol with MacBook Pro

2008-08-27 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Starting the newly installed system, "Keyboard Model" said "Evdev-
managed keyboard". It always flips back to this adjustment when I click
"restore default values" or whatever this is called in the English
version (the button on the right side of the windows right under the
field under which you chopped your screenshot.

When I re-change settings from "Evdev-managed keyboard" to your
settings, there is no change either. No at symbol.

Anyway I personally would think it would be better to have it the PC way
by default, as has been done with all the rest (eg you copy files with
ctrl + c, not with AppleKey + c, which would be the Apple way). The
German PC way would be AltGr + q. But this is a different topic as long
as the problem itself is there.

Guys, this thread is now nearly three months old, and you call Ubuntu
8.10 "stable", and still you don't get along caring that users'
notebooks won't burn down. Sorry, but this is not accpetable.

As a first step wouldn't it be a good idea if you programmed a little
GUI tool that automatically turns on the fan on full speed so that users
won't have to fear that Ubuntu ruins their machines? Just an idea.

As long as things are as they are, IMHO during the installation process
Ubuntu should print a huge warning: "DO NOT USE ON APPLE MACBOOK PROS".

Btw. runtime on battery is about 1/3 compared to what it is on Mac OSX.

Problem is as it was when reporting this.

How do you know whether "most people do not have this problem anymore"?
Maybe people just turned back to OSX.

I would expect a fix that comes with an update, not some by-hand

who perform a fresh install and expect things to work.

Point is that a lot of people here seem ready to give the information
needed but information transfer to the actual project is low.

And, yes, as long as Ubuntu claims:

 Ubuntu 'Just Works'

We've done all the hard work for you. Once Ubuntu is installed, all the basics
are in place so that your system will be immediately usable.

I would expect basic operations to work, especially when it comes to
programs that are part of every default Ubuntu installation.

Why should I re-state the problem? The problem has been described above,
and as far as the test machine reported from at the very beginning is
concerned, there has been no change.

This refers to Ubuntu 8.10 64-Bit and Evolution 2.24.1. Note that on
Alpha and Beta versions of Ubuntu 8.10, this already worked. When
choosing "Global Address Book", the address choosing window went half
white and Evolution seemed to crash, but after a minute or more very
often it recovered and choosing and address from the Global Address Book
was possible. What's the reason for the regression?

[Bug 383212] [NEW] xGPS manager (car navigation for the iPhone 3G) not available in Ubuntu 9.04

2009-06-03 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

AFAIK currently an app called xGPS is the only full scale car navigation
system (including voice guide) for the iPhone 3G. It uses Google Maps
and as far as I read somewhere it can also handle OpenStreetMaps.

Problem is that by default it seems to work only on an offboard basis,
i.e. you need a (probably preferably UMTS) reliable internet connection
to navigate, which is not available everywhere and which can produce
high roaming costs when you are abroad.

xGPS Manager (http://xgps.xwaves.net/index.php/Downloads) is a desktop
program which enables you to copy maps into your iPhone which would then
enable you to navigate on standalone device basis, without an internet
connection.

xGPS Manager is already available for Linux
(http://xgps.xwaves.net/download/xgpsmanager/xGPSManager-1.1.tar.gz).

software for Ubuntu 9.10?

[Bug 372228] [NEW] Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04: Check sum error reported

2009-05-05 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

A colleague of mine downloaded Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 for his "Asus
EEE PC 4G Surf" (*.img file, downloadable from
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-netbook).

He then put the image file on an USB stick using the usb-imagewriter
package, as described on
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromImgFiles#Ubuntu.

usb-imagewriter put the image onto the stick and reported "Success".

My colleague then booted Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) from the above
mentioned USB stick and then intended to perform the integrity test.
There was the first bug: Even though UNR is made for notebooks without a
CD/DVD drive and even though UNR is obviously meant to be installed from
a USB stick, the "integrity test" item on the installtion start screen
mentioned CD/DVD only, so there was no obviously right way of checking
the USB stick for integrity.

Secondly, my colleague performed the above mentioned CD/DVD test from
the start screen (applying it to the USB stick). After checking the
image, the integrity test tool reported that there had been errors found
in one file (or one error found, I don't quite remember).

[Bug 372239] [NEW] Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04: VERY slow graphics on Asus EEE PC 4G (probably Intel 915GML)

2009-05-05 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

A colleague of mine installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) on an Asus EEE
PC 4G. There were some issues during the installation, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/372228. I don't know if this is
related with the following bug.

Ubuntu 8.04 had been running very smoothly on that system, whereas with
UNR 9.04 it is hardly possibly to even use the mouse. When he tries to
use the mouse, there is a constant jerking. Windows open in way like you
would try to run a new GNOME system on a Pentium 90. Seems to me there
is something very much wrong with either the UNR GUI or the graphics
chip recognition. Or else, maybe there is a connection with this:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/349314. Just a
guess.

[Bug 378015] [NEW] Jaunty: iTunes does not start with WINE (installation seems to work ok), therefore no iPhone 3G activation from Jaunty

2009-05-18 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wine

A colleague of mine installed iTunes for Windows XP 32-Bit right-
clicking the installer "start using WINE" in nautilus. The installation
process seemed to work ok with no errors. However, when he typed "wine
itunes" in the shell, iTunes did not start. Thus he could not activate
his iPhone 3G.

System was a fully updated Ubuntu 9.04 64-Bit.

He got the following error messages output, which meant nothing to me:
