[Bug 401126] Re: Realtek RTL8192SE WLAN Card Fails to work on Medion Akoya E1312 Netbook
@ Dmanges et al. I was also tearing out my hair over this. I been working on a brand new Novatech Explora that my mother is going to use. I recently installed Karmic Koala beta, in order to make the wired network work - which it now does. Shortly afterwards, Karmic was upgraded to the release candidate, earlier today. This RC has the 2.6.31-14 kernel. And needless to say, when I tried to get the wireless network to work, the rtl8192se driver would not compile whatever I did. G!!! So I tried a different tack. In a nutshell, instead of "sudoing" the compilation commands, I used the switch user command, thus: sudo su. Then I ran make & make install. Whilst the compile part still threw up a couple of warnings, the install part worked perfectly and now I too have a fully working rtl8192se wireless network. To reiterate, cd to the directory containing your extracted driver files and then do this:- sudo su make make install I'd be interested to know if this works for anyone else. And I'd be even more interested to learn WHY it works! :-) @ David Woo: Thanks for all your efforts on this. People like you really do make the Internet a better place IMHO. [Bug 882274] Re: Community engagement is broken
For those who dislike Unity intensely but do not want to leave the Ubuntu community (yet) here are couple of possible workarounds that might offer you the familiar look-and-feel you require.:- 1. sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop This will install the beautiful-looking and Windows7-like KDE4 desktop. The start button is in the right place. The pop up applications menu, the task bar and status area all make sense. And you can have the desktop as a desktop or a folder or an app or widget or slideshow - your choice. In fact most people I show it to ask if it's a new version of Windows! Most of KDE's notorious early issues have been resolved. Basically KDE4 was released long before it was ready. But it's OK now. pros:- Familiar look-and-feel; very feature-rich; very pretty; highly customisable; shed-loads of eye-candy; lots of extensibility; super KDE apps available (though you can run these on other desktops too); ; my girlfriend likes it - so does my bro. cons:- Can be a bit resource hungry; you really need a decent machine, especially if you want to use all the whirling desktop cubes and wobbly windows and stuff; there are still a few annoying minor bugs that remain unresolved. Not sure if this is a pro or a con:- After you have used KDE 4 for a while, and customised it to your liking, all other desktops, including Macs might seem crude, or lacking in functionality. My g/f has to use a Mac at work and frequently comes home complaining about all the "Things the bloody Mac won't do!" 2. sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop This installs the simple but stable XFCE desktop. This is fairly customisable but generally has the look and feel of a plain vanilla Windows 95 desktop. XFCE can be beautified. However, my experience is that many XFCE users are not interested in beautiful desktops. They just want to look at the web or read their email etc., with the least amount of hassle or delay. Pros:- Very stable, very simple; very familiar look and feel; does not hog resources; doesn't get in the way; Linus Torvalds uses it; my mum likes it. Cons:- It's a bit plain-looking. FWIW, I chose option 1 (KDE) for my desktops/laptops and option 2 (XFCE) for servers, for most of my customers and for elder family members. I have just one customer still determined to give Unity a fair go, and even he's considering dumping it. [Bug 882274] Re: Community engagement is broken
@Tal Liron... I was not offering a solution to the core issues raised by this bug. I was careful to describe my suggestions merely as "possible workarounds". Having completely dumped Windows in favour of Ubuntu back in 2007, Unity was very bad news indeed for us. We have paying customers who depend on Ubuntu, that describe Unity as a "worse than Windows experience" or "Ubuntu's Vista". Therefore we had the stark choice of finding some viable workarounds or dumping Ubuntu altogether. I agree with you that forcing a half-finished desktop on users is a very bad idea - something the KDE devs have very much learnt the hard way. However, I'm not sure I would agree that Unity is a "terrific desktop" though. At least with early, buggy incarnations of KDE 4, one could see that once the bugs were fixed and features properly implemented, that KDE4 would be a great desktop. And it is. The situation with Unity is entirely different, IMHO. What we see with Unity is a crude, Fisher-Price style interface, with loads of really stupid annoying features that get in the way of doing any serious work, e.g. the disappearing scroll bars and menu bars. These features are stupid and annoying. Users hate them. Regardless of how much polish they apply to Unity, these features will *always* be stupid and annoying. Added to which, whilst I am a great admirer of Mark Shuttleworth, I think he is presenting himself very badly in this instance. Frankly, he comes across as arrogant and uncaring. As you put it at top of this thread, rather more politely , "This appears to be a communications failure between the people who make Unity and its community of users." The knock-on effects of this communications failure should not be underestimated. This article by Scott Gilbertson in The Register entitled "Sick of Ubuntu's bad breath? Suck on a Linux Mint instead" sums up the situation far better that I can:- http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/01/30/mint_12_under_the_covers/ And doubtless you have already seen Bruce Byfield's blog in Linux Magazine, that discusses this thread:- http://www.linux-magazine.com/Online/Blogs/Off-the-Beat-Bruce-Byfield-s-Blog/A-Disturbing-Dialog-About-Ubuntu-and-Unity And if that is not enough to indicate that Ubuntu is heading in the wrong direction, Distrowatch's page hit ranking now places Ubuntu at #3, with Mint occupying the top slot for the last 12 months:- http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=popularity Like yourself and many other contributors to this thread, I am a huge Ubuntu fan. I am so very sorry to see it embarking on this path of wilful ignorance and ultimate self-destruction. [Bug 882274] Re: Community engagement is broken
Benjamin. I took great care in my posts *not* to criticise the state of the Ubuntu community in any way at all. My criticisms with regard to engagement were aimed at the seemingly high-handed approach of the leadership and undesirability of forcing a half-finished and some would argue fundamentally-flawed desktop on its community of users. Like the o/p and many other contributors to this thread, I wanted to express my concern with regard to the damage this course of action is likely to cause. Clearly, there is a significant number of users for whom Unity is entirely inappropriate. Therefore I also suggested some safe and relatively straightforward workarounds so that users could stay with Ubuntu, whilst using a desktop environment that was much more suited to their needs. Finally, now that you mention it, how *do* you measure community engagement? And what makes you so certain that the Unity fiasco is really doing no harm? [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system
I can also confirm that using the 275.09.04 drivers package from the "philip5 ppa" resolved the various issues for me too. In fact it seems to work remarkably well. No more nasty screen artefacts, no more random crashes from gnome-terminal or gedit. Whilst I still maintain that NVIDIA was very slow to investigate the issue, once it actually started addressing the issue, it has resolved it commendably quickly. As a side issue, I was interested to note that Philip Johnnson describes his personal package archive as a "Ubuntu experimental rolling release repository." By adding his PPA to one's repository list means that one receives updated versions of many other applications. I'm very interested to see how that pans out because I have found the concept of a "rolling version" rather intriguing. If a rolling edition of (K)Ubuntu eventually comes to pass, then will it mark the end of rushed, untested versions of (K)Ubuntu, banged out quick, with serious bugs such as this, just in order to meet artificial deadlines? Am I going to have to compile from source - or is there a later version of Zim in a PPA? I try to avoid compiling from source if I can and try to stick to the Ubuntu repos on live systems because it means we benefit from automated security updates. But I'll make an exception for Zim if you think that's what I should do? To answer your other question, I do have some files that were imported from elsewhere - quite a common scenario I would have thought? In fact, quite a few of my older notes files came from a Windows system - written before I finally dumped Windows. I used to use Notepad, for taking notes! I was delighted when I moved to Ubuntu to find Zim, because it enabled me to file notes properly. [Bug 584198] Re: search doesn't work after upgrade to lucid
I managed to clean up my text files. I have several hundred, of which about eight had a couple of non standard characters. But it took hours. I had to open each one on Kate, see if Kate opened it read-only (a good indicator of a UTF8 file with non-UTF8 chars, as it happens) fix the problem (often just an apostrophe or a pound sign)) and save the file. TBH, it would be handy if ZIM would at least identify the duff files en masse. On version 0.43, all that happens is the file does not open and then you have to restart ZIM because no other file will open either - except oddly, in a new window! That is really tedious. But no matter. The search works now and that is a great help. I will look around tomorrow and try to find a PPA updated Zim. I am a big fan and it would be great to play with the latest incarnation. I also have kept back a couple of problematic text files so I can see how it reacts to them. I will report back when I have something sensible to add. Best wishes, and thanks again for your very rapid response. [Bug 680444] Re: dbus-daemon eats 100% cpu and is not responsive
@ Tom Cloyd. I have a lot of sympathy for your comment. I have been trying for months to find a fix for this. I have several 64bit KDE machines and they all do the same after a day or two - dbus snaffles large amounts if CPU and the machine grinds to a halt. Seems the KDE team has actually found a fix for this problem, way back in June 2011. However, it would appear that the fix has not been incorporated into Ubuntu yet... http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=261180 Anyone any idea why this should be? Perhaps it's in a PPA somewhere? [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system
Switching off the desktop resolves the issue of the desktop freezing. However it still leaves lots of nasty screen artefacts - mostly random black boxes or parts of the screen that don't refresh. It's usable I suppose - but only just! Sad to note that there is still nothing from NVIDIA - other than its usual deafening silence! [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system
Seems NVIDIA is well aware of the issue - and has been for the last month! Sadly there is little sign of any activity from NVIDIA with regard to solving the issue. http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=161180 http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=161308 Also seems this bug report has been duplicated here:- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/772311 Finally, it is possible to hang the system with gnome-terminal too! Granted, gnome-terminal is not quite as unstable as konsole. But if you fill the gnome-terminal window (e.g. run "ls" on a large directory), then grab the edge of the gnome-terminal window and resize it a bit, then it will start creating some strange artefacts on-screen. If you continue resizing then eventually it will hang. Sometimes you will have to wobble it about a bit. Other times it will hang straight away. [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system
@eagles051387 I'm sorry but I beg to differ. I think we CAN pin the blame fairly and squarely on nVidia. This is a copy of the latest response I have received from nVidia's "customer care", following yet another a fairly strongly worded email from me with regard to nVidia's total lack of activity in this regard:- "Hello, I escalated this problem to the Linux Engineering Manager. An Engineer has been assigned to work on this at high priority. We are targeting the fix for the upcoming 275.xx driver which is currently planned to ship in early June 2011." Added to which, it is NOT just Konsole that is affected. Granted it is the app most likely to crash the entire system. But resizing gnome-terminal will also crash the system - though I accept you need to try harder in order to do so. Then there is the matter of the weird desktop artefacts. Sure, there are workarounds for the crashing - though I've yet to find a workaround for the artefacts. Fact is that nVidia claims to support Linux. Many users, including myself, bought nVidia products on the basis of nVidia's advertised claim. Remember, nVidia's software products are also closed source, which means its users are lumbered with whatever it provides. Added to which, nVidia is NOT just a handful of well-meaning open-source type guys, working for free in their bedrooms. nVidia is a massive, profit- making, NASDAQ 100 corporation, with more than 6000 employees and an estimated enterprise value of $9.6 billion. In other words, nVidia has PLENTY of resources at its disposal. Therefore, the onus is clearly on nVidia to honour its advertised claims and fix the problem. It is not for its users to work around it. I'm suffering exactly the same problem with NVIDIA graphics on Natty. [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system
Thing is, NVIDIA has been aware of the issue for over a month! Five weeks in fact. Perhaps if NVIDIA is unable to resolve the issue in a timely manner, then it should release the source code so that others may have a go? I shall certainly remember this fiasco next time I ever consider purchasing an NVIDIA product. Meantime, if I do find a fix then I will post it here. But don't hold your breath! NVIDIA clearly is in no hurry to fix this and we could be waiting quite a long time. FWIW here is the response I received from what nVidia laughingly describes as "Customer Care":- "Hello, Thank you for contacting NVIDIA Customer Care. Further to my last post, I have been trying workarounds to this problem. Truecrypt is very important for us and not being able to access the menus makes it virtually useless to us. [Bug 669761] [NEW] Ubuntu can only access the internal memory but not the the flash card on Olympus LS5 & LS11 series.
Public bug reported: I have an Olympus LS-5 Linear PCM recorder. This has two recording media, a built-in 2GB memory and an SD slot. In Ubuntu Linux, I can only access its internal memory (2GB), not the memory that belongs to its SH card. However, both Windows XP (SP2) and Macintosh OSX will recognise and access both volumes perfectly. Neither XP nor Mac OS require additional drivers in order to do so. I have also tried its sibling, the Olympus LS-11 on a Ubuntu machine. This exhibits exactly the same behaviour as the LS-5. A quick "dmesg" on a standard Ubuntu box indicates that the Olympus LS-5's SD drive is not being detected by Ubuntu. As you will observe, Ubuntu sees "sdb1", but not "sdb2". I have several Ubuntu boxes some running Lucid and others running Maverick. None of them see the SD drive. Interestingly however, I have one Ubuntu (Maverick) machine running Windows XP, SP2 in Oracle VirtualBox. On this machine, whilst Ubuntu cannot see the SD drive directly, Windows XP inside Virtualbox can see both drives perfectly! The following outputs are from a standard Ubuntu laptop running Maverick:- dmesg | tail [95086.475507] scsi 15:0:0:0: Direct-Access OLYMPUS PCM RECORDER 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2 [95086.479523] sd 15:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0 [95086.498996] sd 15:0:0:0: [sdb] 4014080 512-byte logical blocks: (2.05 GB/1.91 GiB) [95086.499738] sd 15:0:0:0: [sdb] Write Protect is off [95086.499743] sd 15:0:0:0: [sdb] Mode Sense: 0b 00 00 08 [95086.499746] sd 15:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through [95086.503627] sd 15:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through [95086.503637] sdb: sdb1 [95086.516873] sd 15:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through [95086.516880] sd 15:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk uname -a 2.6.35-22-generic #35-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 20:45:36 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux sudo lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available.
