I used to use the official supported LTS Ubuntu Trusty 3.13 kernel line. With current updates. I didn't noticed which subversion started to affect kernel panic after Totem player. May be several months. I tried to stress several times some kernels by Total Player (play, seek, switch playlist...): "4.1.0-040100rc4-generic" OK, never crashed. "3.16.0-pf4" my own customized with some patches. OK, never crashed. "3.16.0-37-generic" Utopic actual supported by Trusty. KERNEL PANIC. "3.13.0-52-generic" Trusty actual. KERNEL PANIC. "3.16.0-rc3-vanilla" KERNEL PANIC. A week of testing my own custom build 3.16.
