[Bug 126916] Re: GDAL hdf/netcdf build problem

2008-07-06 Thread gmayer
I have actually run into this problem and it manifests itself in Hardy
with the gdal libs and -bin installed (1.4.4). I try to open or analyse
ANY netcdf file and it gives me a segmentation fault, see attached .nc
file which causes netcdf to segfault.

Downloading the gdal 1.4.4 source tarball and building it with
(./configure; make) gives me an apps/gdalinfo binary which correctly
reports the metadata of the file.

So this is a build problem which should really be fixed not only for
Intrepid but also for Hardy itself - after all it's supposed to be a
STABLE release. No need to upgrade any packages or mess with any
dependencies - just please build the package correctly.

** Attachment added: "sample netcdf which causes gdalinfo to segfault"

** Also affects: libgdal-grass (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

2009-01-06 Thread gmayer
Thelasko, are you on Intrepid? We're still using hardy here for
stability/LTS reasons and there is no "plugin from Sun" on my 64-bit
installation... Just in case I checked and my openjdk version is exactly
as I posted above, icedtea-gcjwebplugin is now 1.0-0ubuntu8 but it still
doesn't work. Only thing that's different these days is that my FF3.0.5
now says "Stopped" on the status bar at the bottom left.

[Bug 258762] Re: Uploading photos in Facebook does not work

2008-09-03 Thread gmayer
I can confirm this problem on my hardy system. This is on FF3.0.1 as
bundled with Ubuntu 8.04, using openjdk-6-jre 6b11-2ubuntu2 and icedtea-
gcjwebplugin 1.0-0ubuntu5.

When doing the steps above I also get the certificate trust screen,
click on Run and nothing happens, just a grey rectangle with the FF
status bar saying "Start: applet not initialized" at the bottom.

On closer inspection this could well be an issue with icedtea-
gcjwebplugin though, not openjdk. See bug 199680 which is related to
applets over an ssl connection and seems to be the same problem

[Bug 75295] Re: Feisty freeze, kernel (?) tries to access DVD drive

2007-11-28 Thread gmayer
I just wanted to say that I managed to get rid of lots of weird ata soft
resets and other related problems (see bug 104581) thanks to Tom's
instructions using two flash drives. I'm on a Samsung Q35 laptop with
the notorious TSSTcorp TS-L632D DVD writer (used to be firmware_version
SC02, now SC04, downloaded). I have no Windows partition as I completely
nuked it a while back, I'm an Ubuntu purist ;-). The FreeDOS's USB
drivers work perfectly on my laptop too so that I had no problem
accessing once I had booted from the first flash drive.

So I can vouch for Tom's instructions and would consider them as generic
as long the reader has the same drive as above and no access to a
Windows partition. For those folks still dependent on Windows the above
instructions are probably easier.

[Bug 75295] Re: Feisty freeze, kernel (?) tries to access DVD drive

To expand on my previous post: It was in relation to Gareth's comment
above (2007-08-25,

the bit about what the folks like me without a Windows partition should
do, referring to a post by Thomas Aaron in bug 117441.

I've no been going strong for three days without issues, seems like that
DVD writer firmware upgrade did wonders indeed.

[Bug 129213] Re: Gutsy Regression: ipw3945 Connects To Untrusted Networks

2007-11-30 Thread gmayer
I must say that I'm still encountering this problem. I've ignored or
worked around it for a while but it's getting damn annoying now.

Symptoms: ipw3945 connects to untrusted wireless networks all by itself,
causing havoc with NM and lately even on the command line. I need to
restart NM and/or reload the driver very often but just now it's gotten
a whole load worse:

I kill all traces of NM, ipw3945d and unload ipw3945. There's a specific
unprotected network I want to connect to so I modprobe ipw3945 and issue

iwconfig eth1 essid "My First Network" && iwconfig eth1 ap
00:eb:10:c8:20:19

It first associates fine but a few seconds later the driver completely
forgets both essid and bssid forced above and happily goes on to connect
to "My Second Network", the one which I use most of the time. Repeatedly
specifying the above command does nothing to rectify the situation, it
keeps falling back on the second network. Signal issues are not
relevant, rssi's are around -50dBm, the two ap's are identical in model
and stacked on top of each other.

I'm on gutsy with everything 100% up to date:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# modinfo ipw3945 | grep ^version
version:1.2.2mp.ubuntu1

[Bug 157191] Re: please enable CONFIG_TASKSTATS, especially CONFIG_TASK_IO_ACCOUNTING

2007-12-26 Thread gmayer
I need to second this request. Being able to view disk i/o stats per
process is very important as it would greatly help newbies, advanced
users and developers alike to track down what i/o hogging processes are
causing their ubuntu systems to slow down. This happens more than people
think, the recent spate of bugs/forum posts related to trackerd is just
one example of how top/vmstat/iostat et al are useless for such a task.

People are asking for this capability all the time, see

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=646611
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=294555
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=396692

as just some examples of users screaming for this functionality. While
I'm an avid Ubuntu user myself (I completely wiped my M$ Windoze
partition btw) I think it's pretty sad that all other OS's have that
capability built-in but ubuntu doesn't, and all it takes to fix is to
turn on a simple kernel config option...

BTW, I got alerted to this by an excellent thread on linuxquestions

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-kernel-70/how-to-enable-
process-io-statistics-600777/#post2963872

which mentions that the latest version of collectl also supporting the
"new" i/o /proc interface (not in the repos yet, see bug# 135037)

[Bug 97310] Re: Kernel panic while opening a usbserial port with Feisty Fawn Beta

2008-03-20 Thread gmayer
Hmm, there still hasn't been any progress made upstream and it seems
like that's the definitive source (unless the kernel's bugzilla is badly
maintained), so I doubt Hardy Alpha would have made any strides in
solving this. And I've confirmed the problem in Gutsy, so I think we're
far from closing this.

Having said that unfortunately I cannot test the latest LiveCD as
bandwidth is very expensive and slow where I live but when something
hits the local mirrors I'd gladly test.

Ok, I apologise for not reading the most recent messages here (default

sl-modem-daemon (which Ubuntu's proprietary driver utility installed for
me way in the beginning) resolves the issue for me. I can now reboot and
still have my sound working as it should without having to force an alsa

In essence this is a bug then for sl-modem-daemon and not audio,
