[Bug 1559463] [NEW] Upgrade trusty -> xenial failed - blank screen

2016-03-19 Thread gerry_the_hat
Public bug reported:

My upgrade partly failed. Upgrade manager prepared the upgrade,
downloaded the packages and went thru the installation and setup phase.
During this phase, the display just blanked. The laptop was not shut
down. Thought the system freezed, as I was completely locked out - no
switch to console possible, nor a ssh login from another system.

Solution:
Hard reset and boot. The system booted at least, but no X, nor network
connection working, just a console. A "dpkg --configure -a" resumed the setup
and completed successfully. Reboot and now I have a smooth Xenial system :-)

During the preparation I got a warning about a running screensaver and
xclock - something and a possible lockout. The screensaver was actually
disabled, but a process was running. Just killed it and proceeded.

[Bug 1559463] Re: Upgrade trusty -> xenial failed - blank screen

2016-03-19 Thread gerry_the_hat
Well, found out that two screensavers were installed - the old
xscreensaver and the new light locker. I'm not sure yet, but thought
about that the two caused the trouble. For some unknown reasons, the old
xcreensaver didn't get uninstalled from my previous upgrades from the
last couple of years. Have seen complaints and bug reports for this. So,
might the case that at least one of them was active while doing the
upgrade... However, this does not explain why there was no switch into a
console possible.

As far as I have seen from the logs attached, the upgrade just
stopped...

[Bug 1559694] [NEW] ubiquity manual partitioning: encrypted LVM struck

2016-03-20 Thread gerry_the_hat
Public bug reported:

For the manual partitioning, once you have selected encrypted LVM and
confirmed to write the change to disk, one can't change the layout any
more. Neither the "-" button nor the revert, nor the back button let you
delete the LVM device, see screenshot.

This was seen while testing the Xenial Daily.

[Bug 1555237] Re: Upgrade from 14.04.4→ 16.04 dies midway taking out the session.

2016-03-25 Thread gerry_the_hat
In order to recreate things I virtualized my laptop (backup and restore
into a VM). So from now an, it should be much easier :-)

However, I'm bit struck. Performed the upgrade once more with same
result: system is some kind of frozen. Compared the distupgrader's logs
with my previous attempt and failed to find a common pattern. At least
one thing I can say for sure: does not have someting to do with
screensavers, as this was disabled at all, same goes for the power saver
settings. I also checked the logs from Dave's attempt without finding
something similar to mine...

Well, I'm willing to rerun an upgrade, but need assistance to increase
the logging level for instance. Think we need more data to dig deeper.
