[Bug 388534] [NEW] Windows button should open Main Menu by default
Public bug reported: Nearly all keyboards have a Windows button like this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/33359...@n00/3635330369/ When using Windows, pressing this key brings up the Start Menu, the central starting point for launching applications and accessing folders and documents. Ubuntu's equivalent to the Start Menu is the Main Menu at the top left of the screen on a default installation (Applications / Places / System). Currently the Windows button is not mapped, which seems like a waste of a button that's not going away any time soon. To most users coming from Windows, the most intuitive behaviour would be if said button opened Ubuntu's Main Menu. This is easily doable through System -> Keyboard Shortcuts, but most users don't change default settings. This would be a good papercuts candidate as it requires no coding, just a change in default keyboard shortcut preferences for the next Ubuntu edition. ** Affects: hundredpapercuts Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: mainmenu windowskey ** Also affects: hundredpapercuts Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Windows button should open Main Menu by default https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/388534 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 161960] Re: Add function to WinKey button on keyboard
Windows uses the key for many shortcuts too, but pressing it alone results in the start menu popping up (this is achieved by not bringing up the start menu until the button is released, as opposed to responding immediately when pressed). This is the most common use. Would such a solution be achievable in Ubuntu without too much plumbing? That way existing applications could continue to use the key as a modifier for shortcuts, while the Applications Menu would pop up if the key was used in isolation of other keys. -- Add function to WinKey button on keyboard https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/161960 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 161960] Re: Add function to WinKey button on keyboard
Teej, I think these days we can assume assume that the vast majority of users have the windows key on their keyboards and know how to use it (at least to bring up their Windows Start Menu). No average PC or Laptop sold within the last 5 years would exclude it. How many keyboards can you find on Newegg or Amazon that exclude the Windows key? HP's or Acer's laptop ranges? What about Logitech or Cherry's products? Even all of Dell's Ubuntu-powered offerings include the key. In fact, I think you would find it a challenge to source a new keyboard without such a key in mainstream outlets. Of course there will always be people out there with obscure IBM classics and Sun relics, but neither of those companies produce keyboards today. Apple keyboards are the exception here - but are we catering to niches or masses with Ubuntu? Besides, there is nothing wrong with retaining the existing ALT+F1 shortcut for those without said key. Of the 13 different people that have participated in this discussion so far, 10 favour making the Windows key pop up the Applications menu by default, 2 people were against it and one didn't state a preference. That's a pretty overwhelming majority, yet you keep shutting the bug down as Invalid. [Bug 387957] [NEW] Improve Save As Dialog Box (focus issues)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus The save dialog box has the irritating habit of not focusing on the file name area once I have browsed to the location where I would like to save my document. This is done better in Windows. There are two main scenarios when saving a document where this behaviour annoys: Scanario 1 - Browsing to save location by double-clicking: 1. File -> Save As (to bring up the "Save" dialog box). 2. Double click on the folder in which you would like to save the document. 3. Notice that the focus is now in the folder list area, not on the file name area. 4. I now have to click in the file name area to be able to name my document. In Windows, the focus is returned immediately to the file name box once a folder is double clicked, so the name can be typed and the document saved in one step. Scenario 2 - Browsing save location using the keyboard (find as you type): 1. File -> Save As (to bring up the "Save" dialog box). 2. Click on the folder area so that folder names can be typed to find them. Hit enter to enter desired folder. 3. Within the folder, step 2 can be repeated for subfolders indefinitely. 4. Once the desired location has been reached, the user must use the mouse click in the file name area to name the file before saving. In Windows, when using find as you type, although focus is retained by the folder area when entering a lower folder level (so that you can browse to another level using the keyboard if desired), jumping to the file name box is simply a matter of pressing tab ONCE. In Ubuntu, I have to reverse tab (shift-tab) around 10 times to get back to the file name box at the top of the screen, or use the mouse - most annoying. Solutions (copy the Windows behaviour): 1. If a folder is double clicked with the mouse, the focus should jump back to the file name box. 2. If a folder is entered into by pressing enter (on the keyboard), focus should remain in the folder area, but the file name box should only be a single tab away. I understand that solution 2 is problematic in that tabbing would ordinarily jump to the next element (usually the "file type" dropdown), not back to the top of the screen. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: nautilus save saveas -- Improve Save As Dialog Box (focus issues) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/387957 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 363812] Re: Ericsson F3507g (0bdb:1900) - does not display in NetworkManager, tho USB ACM devices are registered
I have a Lenovo x200 running Jaunty 64, with similar issues, and I've looked at a few other bugs that also have strange "disappearing device" behaviour, such as: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/287893 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/334413 I've been observing this for about 3 weeks now trying to find a meaningful pattern that would help track this down, but I can't. My observations: Sometimes the card appears, sometimes it does not. When it does, it works fine using Network Manager, although I've yet to test the suspend / resume functionality that people have been having issues with. When it does not: - There is no /dev/ttyACM[012]. - It doesn't show up in lsusb. - There is nothing in dmesg hinting towards it (not even messages about cdc_acm). - Cycling Fn-F5 only affects Bluetooth and Wifi. - /sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/wwan_enable does not exist. I'm currently running on 2.6.31-020631rc5-generic but have also tried v2.6.31-rc4, v2.6.31-rc3, v2.6.30, 2.6.28-14 and the stock Jaunty kernels before it. I have also tried the latest Karmic Alpha 3, but the results are the same. None of them seem to make the device show up or not show up any more or less frequently as far as I can tell. I would say that on average, it shows up 60-70% of the time. I'm running BIOS 3.05 (it seems 3.06 has been released, but the download link is broken - the changelog doesn't show anything related to this though). I've enabled everything possible in terms of internal components in the BIOS. The card's firmware is also the latest I think: R1D06 If there is anything else useful that I can provide, please let me know. I've attached a dmesg - this is when the card is not appearing. ** Attachment added: "dmesg" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/29959554/dmesg -- Ericsson F3507g (0bdb:1900) - does not display in NetworkManager, tho USB ACM devices are registered https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/363812 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 387957] Re: Improve Save As Dialog Box (focus issues)
Thanks for your note David. I'm not suggesting to change the behaviour of the Find As You Type feature that allows quickly jumping through directory structures by typing folders' initial letters. Personally I use this all the time and think it's great. The main issue here, especially for non-advanced users, is Scenario 1 (above), where the find as you type feature is not used (ie the user double-clicks on folders to define the save location). In this case, the focus is not returned to the Name field after double-clicking on folders. This means that after finding the desired location, the user has to move the mouse back to the Name field, highlight the existing name (usually something like "Untitled 1"), then type a name in and press Save. In Windows, the focus is returned to the Name field after double clicking on a folder. But Find as you type is also available on Windows for advanced users - by single-clicking in the folder area (either on a folder or in an empty space), focus is switched to the folder area and find as you type can be used - focus only jumps back to the Name field if the mouse is used to double click a folder. If enter is pressed to enter a sub-folder, focus remains in the folder area. My guess is that Ubuntu's interface was designed with the assumption that the user would first name the file, then choose the location to save it. I don't work this way and my guess is that I'm not alone. I like to see the contents of a folder before choosing how to name a new file. I don't have a Mac to hand but I'll try and have a play with one to see how they do it over the next couple of days - I'm sure they've got a smart solution to this problem, and their layout is similar to Ubuntu's (with the name field at the top). In summary: If a folder is double clicked with the mouse, focus should jump to the Name field. That is the only change I am proposing for this paper cut. If enter is used to enter a folder, focus in the folder area should be maintained (the current behaviour). Advanced users would not be affected, but non-advanced users would be saved from a lot of clicking. -- Improve Save As Dialog Box (focus issues) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/387957 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 387957] Re: Improve Save As Dialog Box (focus issues)
Ok, I checked on Mac OS (10.5.something) and they solve it as follows: When navigating folders by keyboard, pressing tab ONCE takes you from the folder list straight back to the Name field, as it does in Windows (the layouts are different, but the effect is the same). There are only four "tab stops" in the Mac Save dialog box: Name, Find, Places (equivalent) and the Folder List area - in that order. This works excellently when using only the keyboard to save a file in a specific location. I've never really used a Mac, but I was able get the hang of this in seconds. Unlike Windows however, using the mouse to navigate the folder structure does not automatically return focus to the Name field - you have to do it by tabbing (once) or by using the mouse. I have also noticed that in Ubuntu it is not possible to tab through all the fields as it is on both other OSs, as the Name field uses tab to autocomplete (it just shows "No match" when tab is pressed). Unintuitively, the down arrow can be used to move away from the Name field instead. You can use the arrow keys to move through different fields until you reach the Places list, where behaviour changes again and they start moving up and down the Places list. Only tab will then take you from Places to the folder selection list. With a lot of upping and downing and tabbing it is actually possible to save a file in a specific location using the keyboard, but it is far from quick, easy or intuitive. I think the whole save dialog needs looking at from scratch, but meanwhile I believe usability could be improved by: 1. Reverting focus to the Name field if a folder is double-clicked using the mouse (familiar Windows behaviour, which does not impact keyboard- using advanced users in any way). 2. Making the Name field the next tab stop after the folder selection list (familiar Windows and Mac behaviour). Keyboard using advanced users will welcome this too. -- Improve Save As Dialog Box (focus issues) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/387957 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I have the same problem on Gutsy (final). I have dual screen (twinview, not xinerama). As soon as I switch back from another user, the screens go blank (light gray). My card now works reliably after startup (unlike issues I was having in comment 43), and running echo enabled > /proc/acpi/ibm/wan brings the card back reliably too as far as I can tell. [Bug 576698] Re: gnome-power-manager hibernates instead of suspending on idle
Thanks for the workaround, this was annoying me as my laptop takes forever to struggle out of hibernation! I agree that the language is ambiguous. In the rest of the dialog box, suspend or hibernate are used explicitly - "sleep" is more of a Windows word I think. I don't mind which terminology is used, but it should be consistent throughout. It would also be nice if it were possible to choose whether to suspend or hibernate, as well as the period of idleness. But in any case, even if the box is left unmodified, it should suspend by default, not hibernate. -- gnome-power-manager hibernates instead of suspending on idle https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/576698 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 387957] Re: Improve Save As Dialog Box (focus issues)
I suspect the bug report was either not fully read or fully understood by David S, otherwise he would not have written that - he must have thought I was wanting to eliminate the find as you type feature, which is not the case at all. I know the Save dialog is not something that developers use very frequently, but anyone that ever tries to get real-life knowledge workers to use OpenOffice on any Gnome-using OS will run into this complaint very quickly (I know). Saving a new document is just too hard. By the way, KDE (Qt) does this better too; choose a folder where you want to save your document and a SINGLE tab takes you back to the file name entry field (just like on Windows and Mac OS). Despite all being very different, 3 of the top 4 desktop GUIs allow you to jump from the folder selection space to the file name entry field with a SINGLE push of the tab key - maybe that's a hint that Gnome is doing it wrong. -- Improve Save As Dialog Box (focus issues) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/387957 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1838151] Re: Poor quality audio with modern Bluetooth headsets in HSP/HFP. Missing wide band speech support (Bluetooth A2DP codecs).
@igor871 Very interested to learn more about such Bluetooth audio cards. Years ago I had a Plantronics headset (Voyager?) that came with a USB dongle that presented itself as a USB sound card to the operating system, and it was perfect (two-way HD audio). But the dongle (Plantronics BT300 and BT600) is only compatible with Plantronics headsets from what I understand. I've looked at the Creative Labs USB Bluetooth sound cards (BT-W2 and BT-W3), but the first one requires the FastStream codec to provide high quality two way audio, which is rare, and the second just includes an analog mic that you plug into to your laptop's mic-in port - hardly a solution (I may as well use my laptop's in-built mic). They do support two way audio with your headset's mic, but only in classic HFP mode, which is what we already have. Are you aware of any other solutions? I would pay good money for a USB dongle that presents itself as a sound card to the OS and supports HFP 1.6 HD two way audio. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1838151 Title: Poor quality audio with modern Bluetooth headsets in HSP/HFP. I got a helpful response from Saúl Ibarra Corretgé at AG Projects, the makers of Blink. I will paste it below: We do have plans to repackage Blink for Precise, it will happen after the next python-sipsimple release, but we have no ETA for that yet. As for the crash, it happens somewhere in libcrypto, which is wrapped by python-gnutls, so there is nothing to fix in Blink. However, we are also the authors of python-gnutls, so if it's a problem in that library we will fix it. Unfortunately, the problem seems to be in libcrypto, not in python-gnutls, so there is not much we can do. [Bug 664949] [NEW] Sorting enhancement for images taken in quick succession
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: shotwell Today I took a series of photos of a boy riding a scooter. I used my camera's Sport mode, which can shoot around 3 - 4 frames per second. When I loaded them into Shotwell, I noticed that a number of photos were incorrectly sorted; frames that I shot later appeared earlier in the sequence and vice versa. Looking at the metadata, each photo is time stamped only to the nearest second, so to Shotwell, images taken in quick succession (in the same second) appear to have been taken at the same time; it has no way to distinguish which was actually taken first. I think one solution to this issue would be to sort by file name if images have identical time stamps. I think most cameras create sequential file names - mine has IMG_4145.JPG...IMG4145.JPG and so forth for example. ** Affects: shotwell (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Sorting enhancement for images taken in quick succession https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/664949 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 236275] Re: System very slow after suspend-to-ram
I have this issue too on a Thinkpad X200. I had Maverick 64-bit installed from Oct-2010 without issue, but I did a fresh install the other day and have been having the issue ever since. Both were 64-bit Maverick. Using current kernel (Linux x200 2.6.35-28-generic #49-Ubuntu SMP). Contrary to others, no swap is being used and only an average 800 MB of RAM is being used (I have 4 GB total) when this happens. Initially I thought it had to do with CPU frequency scaling, but forcing the cores to run at max speed doesn't change anything. Also, when the issue is not occurring and I force the CPU cores to run at min speed (800 MHz), it's still much faster than when in this post-suspend slow state. top shows nothing out of the ordinary - no run-away processes or the like. Nothing noteworthy in syslog. But the cores are completely maxed out at the smallest effort - running gmail in Firefox for example. I'm wondering if this is the same issue: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/371212 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/236275 Title: System very slow after suspend-to-ram -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Current choices: - Medium 500 x 375 - Large 1024 x 768 - Original Size Many of my contacts have monitors 1650 or 1920 pixels wide and view the slideshows full screen, so it seems like a shame not to be able to offer a higher resolution than 1024 x 768 without uploading the full image (8 MB+ on recent SLRs). [Bug 387957] Re: Improve Save As Dialog Box (focus issues)
No, apparently due to the complexity and depth of the issue, it doesn't qualify as a papercut. Meanwhile Mozilla has fixed the issue in Firefox by simply redesigning the "Save As..." dialog entirely. While I welcome the progress, it's frustrating that this oft-used interface will no longer be standard across all applications on the desktop - OpenOffice used to have its own unique open / close dialogs and it wasn't pretty (although perhaps more functional). http://www.webupd8.org/2010/07/firefox-40-nightly-gets-new-download.html -- Improve Save As Dialog Box (focus issues) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/387957 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
