I beleive I have the same problem with 4.1.1+xorg1.0.2-0ubuntu7 (Hardy).

If I did not move the mouse or typed anything on the keyboard all I got
is a blank screen.

The situation is the same if I connected to the vncserver locally.

I use x11vnc as a workaround.

Same problem here with HP Deskjet 5550.
Description: hp deskjet 5550
 Location: 
 Printer Driver: HP DeskJet 5550 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended)
 Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published. 
Device URI: hp:/usb/deskjet_5550?serial=MY2CH1M15K2L

It starts printing but only after a few lines on the paper cups says
"unplugged or turned off" which is not true of course. I have to restart
the printer manually, then it works alright afterwards.
