[Bug 38131] Re: Firefox causes massive Xorg CPU usage

2008-07-29 Thread brendan
I have an additional data point to add. My setup is:

 * Ubuntu 8.04
 * AMD64
 * 2.6.24-19-generic
 * Firefox 3.01 (Mozilla distribution, not Ubuntu)
 * Nvidia driver 169.12
 * Flash 10 beta

This problem manifested itself most noticeably on Facebook's new redesign
(new.facebook.com):
  * During page load, both Xorg and Firefox would spike to ~50% CPU used each.
  * Once the page finished loading, Xorg would eat up ~86% of CPU time and
Firefox would consume ~10%.

I downgraded to Flash 9 and marked a dramatic improvement:
  * During page load, both still hit ~50% each.
  * After page load, Xorg dropped to ~15-25% CPU, Firefox stayed at ~10%.

I understand that people have seen this problem without Flash being in
the mix at all (i.e. with Java applets); nevertheless, it could help in
finding the problem to see that Flash version can be a switch to toggle
it on and off in a certain circumstance.

It is likely that the way Flash 10 interacts with Firefox hits a very
different (buggy) codepath than the Flash 9 interaction. This theory is
further supported by the new additions to Flash 10:
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/releasenotes.html#features
-- nearly all of these changes are related to *graphics* and would
likely interface with Xorg in a different manner.

[Bug 220957] Re: Fails to see blank CD/DVDs for writing

2008-07-13 Thread Brendan
I have the same problem in that i can no longer access any media on
cdrom. My hardware is still fine on windows. But one thing to note is
that when i upgraded to Hardy (at release time), i was able to access a
music cd at least (didn't use any other feature from my dvd-rw). Since
i apply all updated software on a regular basis, i can only presume
something broke this ability. I can confirm i'm not able to mount any
data cdrom or dvdrom, and have similar output to commands as listed
above.

Noted above 2 x Pioneer models of DVD writers, mine is a Pioneer DVR-110
out of interest.

Thank you for the input, but that couldn't have been the issue.
This problem happened before I did any compiling and installing
under /usr/local, on two machines even. This was an issue I tracked and
debugged for a week solid, because, as a photographer, I can't live without
digikam.

I reinstalled, removed /usr/local, recompiled, added libraries, did a fresh
install of Hardy, everything. For some reason, this past update solved it. I
have no idea why if there was just disabling debug. Weird. Thank you anyway.

but the kio_digikamalbums.la message is still there and the
albums/pictures do not show up...

available) on Google Code:

[Bug 91192] Re: kernel lockup on feisty because of rt61 driver

2007-06-23 Thread Brendan
I can confirm this bug. Also, I just switched to the CVS version, and so
far so good, no freezes. For the record, I had this bug on Edgy too, so
I don't think it's a Feisty-only issue.

I confirm what Luis suggested:

I'm running 3.5.3 on karmic; I just switched /tmp to be a tmpfs mount
and pointed Firefox's browser.cache.disk.parent_directory setting to
stick the cache in /tmp. I now get this error message every time I
start Firefox.

I tried downloading the newer ralink driver from here:

I picked the "RT2860PCI/mPCI/CB/PCIe(RT2760/RT2790/RT2860/RT2890)" option.

However, I can't get it to compile properly:

[Bug 1850099] [NEW] Kernel 5.3.0-19 panic after upgrade to eoan ermine from disco dingo

2019-10-27 Thread Brendan
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to eoan ermine, my laptop (Dell Precision 5510) got an error
message stating
"Error: out of memory
Press any key to continue..."

After pressing a key, nothing changed. I left the room and came back to
see that there was a kernel panic. I'll attach picture as I couldn't
copy/paste the console output.

Description:Ubuntu 19.10
Release:19.10

linux-image-5.3.0-19-generic

I expect the kernel to load without a panic.
The kernel panicked.

After rebooting and selecting an older kernel, I was able to boot and
load the old kernel without issue (5.0.0-32-generic)

[Bug 1644947] [NEW] sound will not function in any form

2016-11-25 Thread Brendan
Public bug reported:

audio fail in any format, weather using main speakers head phones, or
external head phones. im not new to Ubuntu and have solved several audio
issues in the past but this one eludes me. i am making the assumption
that there may be no Linux compatible sound driver, this is NOT a dual
boot operating system, i have no other computer at the moment and if i
did i have not used a windows OS in over 20 years and would not know how
to. with all my years of running Linux ive never had a problem so big
that i couldn't just look it up, i do now. this is a 32 bit microwatt OS
with Ubuntu a its base. 32 bit, 1 gb ram, 134 gb hard disk, Intel atom
n450 or n470 processes at 1.66 GHz manufactured in 2009. i cant give
much in terms of what is wrong with the sound, as i myself do not know.
as for giving the steps ive already taken those are many and i haven't
kept a list.

[Bug 152756] Re: stale files in /var/lib/initramfs-tools after removing kernel

2017-09-20 Thread Brendan
Just for posterity's sake, I was able to solve my issue of older
initrd's consuming all of the space in /boot by removing the ones whose
kernel had been purged.

I had a /boot partition that was quite small and nearly every kernel
upgrade would fail with "no space left on device" messages.

[Bug 1309832] Re: Mythbuntu 14.04 crashes during install

2014-04-23 Thread Brendan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1290460 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1290460

FYI Had the same problem, if you read this:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1290460

You'll see its a problem with installing VNC with your mythbuntu
install.. So un-check that and re-attempt installation.. Good Luck

[Bug 1320305] Re: gdb-arm-none-eabi's manpage clashes with gdb's manpage

2014-05-16 Thread Brendan
To clarify: When I say "gdb" in the report I mean GDB for a native
target - that is for AMD64 target. gdb-arm-none-eabi is a cross-
debugger: GDB for ARM targets (but still for AMD64 *hosts*!).

[Bug 1321923] [NEW] Udisks sometimes fails to mount loop devices

2014-05-21 Thread Brendan
Public bug reported:

I can produce the bug by running this script:

#!/bin/bash
sleep=""
# Create a FAT filesystem image
# (-C makes it create the file - 2048 is the number of blocks)
ls test.img && rm test.img
$sleep
mkfs.msdos -C test.img 2048
$sleep
loopdev=$(losetup -f --show test.img)
$sleep
udisks --mount $loopdev
$sleep
udisks --unmount $loopdev
$sleep
losetup -d $loopdev

"udisks --mount" says: Cannot find device with major:minor 7:1: No such
device

If the "sleep" variable in the script above is set to "sleep 2" (so that
there's a 2 second delay between each command), the problem doesn't
appear (and accordingly I haven't reproduced it by typing commands at an
interactive prompt - presumably because of the delay between commands).

Sorry, not too sure what other info I can add. I haven't done any custom
configuration relating to Udev, Udisks or systemd in general. I am
running this script as a normal user, after running "sudo chmod a+rw
/dev/loop*".

[Bug 1642400] [NEW] nvidia-367.57 with kernel 4.4.0-47-generic won't boot

2016-11-16 Thread Brendan
Public bug reported:

Pretty much identical to bug 1638990 except that this behavior also
happens with the most recent Xenial kernel, 4.4.0-47-generic.

If I boot into recovery mode on 4.4.0-47-generic, mount the filesystem as
read/write, start networking, the resume normal boot, I can finally get into my
window manager. But if I reboot and let
GRUB handle boot normally, it doesn't even let me enter my encryption
passphrase. Just sits at a blinking cursor.

Switching back to nouveau works, but after reinstalling 367.57, the
behavior returns and the aforementioned steps have to be followed.

Ubuntu 4.4.0-47.68-generic 4.4.24

:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
Release:16.04

:~$ apt-cache policy linux-image-generic
linux-image-generic:
  Installed: 4.4.0.47.50

Packages

 4.4.0.21.22 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages

I expect that I should be able to boot normally with nvidia drivers,
without any special steps to boot. But instead, I just get a blinking
cursor before I can even unlock my encrypted drive.

[Bug 1726519] [NEW] Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at isci_task_abort_task

2017-10-23 Thread Brendan
Public bug reported:

So I just upgrade from zesty zapus to artful aardvark. At boot, right
after I enter my drive encryption password, it kernel panics with the
above message.

It doesn't even get far enough along in the boot process for syslog to
log this panic, so the only info I have is a photo of the panic.

In short, I can't boot using the latest artful aardvark kernel, and I
have to boot with the latest zesty zapus kernel.

2017-10-23 Thread Brendan
So I installed the mainline kernel, and the same issue happened. I
couldn't get a picture as it was truncated due to resolution being
lowered during boot.

I lied. Just was able to get this testing in.

4.11 - Works
4.12 - Failed to boot with the same panic
4.13 - Didn't test since 4.12 failed

[Bug 1633172] Re: Linux 4.8 as in 16.10 hangs during boot

2016-10-31 Thread Brendan
I think I am hitting this as well. Upgraded from 16.04, to 16.10. The kernel
that is installed is
4.8.0-26-generic

I also have an nVidia GPU. Some strange behavior I noticed, however. If
I boot into the recovery kernel for 4.8.0-26, and choose 'Fix broken
packages', it hangs at a certain point (don't recall off-hand where).

But if I throw sigint/^c/ctrl+c, the normal boot process starts and
eventually drops me into multi-user mode in xfce and I can work
normally, and running 4.8.0-26. So this is a possible work around?

To be honest, I am not sure. This is the first kernel related issue I've
had with Ubuntu. Is it worth trying the steps your proposed in comment
#51 ?

[Bug 1633172] Re: Linux 4.8 as in 16.10 hangs during boot

2016-11-01 Thread Brendan
I couldn't find the 4.8.0-25-generic kernel in that PPA, however. Can I
just install the driver through 4.4, then boot back into
4.8.0-26-generic? Or is installing 4.8.0-25-generic a mandatory
prerequisite?

That driver made it so I could no longer start X. So neither kernel
would fully boot. Time was of the essence, so I just started fresh from
Xenial until this bug is fixed.

After hitting bug 1633172 and the workaround putting me in a worse state
than the initial bug, I started from scratch with Xenial. That worked
for a short 24 hours.

Then this morning, I got an update for my nvidia drivers. After I
upgraded the drivers, I could no longer boot into ubuntu with kernel
4.4.0-45-generic. If I booted with kernel 4.4.0-31-generic, I no longer
had an issue.

Tried setting nomodeset in grub, but to no effect.

[Bug 1638990] Re: nvidia-367 with kernel 4.4.0-45-generic won't boot

2016-11-03 Thread Brendan
So I was able to get back into a functioning state.

I booted back into the 4.4.0-31-generic kernel, re-installed the nouveau driver
via Additional Drivers
Rebooted and chose the 4.4.0-45-generic kernel
Re-install the nvidia 367.57 drivers via Additional Drivers

However, something here seems to clunky if one has to do that to get the
drivers to work. Whether that's nvidia related or otherwise.

[Bug 1646547] [NEW] nvidia-367.57 with kernel 4.4.0-51-generic won't boot

2016-12-01 Thread Brendan
Public bug reported:

Pretty much identical to bug 1642400 and bug 1638990 except that this
behavior also happens with the most recent Xenial kernel,
4.4.0-51-generic.

If I boot into recovery mode on 4.4.0-51-generic, mount the filesystem as
read/write, start networking, the resume normal boot, I can finally get into my
window manager. But if I reboot and let
GRUB handle boot normally, it doesn't even let me enter my encryption
passphrase. Just sits at a blinking cursor.

Switching back to nouveau works, but after reinstalling 367.57, the
behavior returns and the aforementioned steps have to be followed.

Ubuntu 4.4.0-51.72-generic 4.4.30

:~$ lsb_release -rd

I expect that I should be able to boot normally with nvidia drivers,
without any special steps to boot. But instead, I just get a blinking
cursor before I can even unlock my encrypted drive.

2016-12-06 Thread Brendan
Is there a specific time in boot I should be holding shift? I have tried
holding as soon as I start seeing POST messaging, and also tried once
the GRUB menu came up.

But it still doesn't get me to the screen to enter my disk encryption
password.

I expect that I should be able to boot normally with nvidia drivers,
without any special steps to boot. But instead, I just get a blinking
cursor before I can even unlock my encrypted drive.

I thought it would be worth reporting, because I just upgraded to the
new Ubuntu 13.10, so it hasn't been resolved yet.

(To get this to work I had to uninstall virtualbox and nvidia-304).

If I try and boot with kernel 3.18, I get dropped to a busybox shell, at
which I find that the root fs hasn't been mounted (running `mount` shows
that "rootfs" is mounted at / - I guess that means the initrd?),
/proc/modules is empty, and no devices are foun
