[Bug 1312103] [NEW] tiff3 not available in 14.04 for installing canon printer driver

2014-04-24 Thread bakker
Public bug reported:

Two canon printer drivers that work with ubuntu 12.04 do not work with
ubuntu 14.04.

Error messages appear trying to install well known canon printer
drivers.

The printer drivers are :
Canon Inkjet Printer Driver for Linux:
cnijfilter-mg5100series-3.40-1-deb.tar.gz
and the
Linux_UFRII_PrinterDriver_V280_us_EN.tar.gz

Any clues why they work perfect with 12.04 but not with 14.04 ?
Or even better how to make these drivers work on 14.04 ?

For more info see QUESTION # 247441

[Bug 233835] [NEW] 8254 problem

2008-05-21 Thread Ron Bakker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome

The system gives the error: "8254 timer not connected to io-apic" and Gnome
will not work.
In Kubuntu there is no problem, in Gnome with KDM instead of GDM the problem
stays.
Update is not possible in terminal screen !

Installing Kubuntu then installing Ibuntu-desktop, then updating (in
KDE) and updating in the terminal gives a working Gnome with the ATI
driver.

This is not the way a newcomer must work.

Please repair this in 8.04.1

regards,
Ron

Re: [Bug 137725] Re: textfield of strigiapplet loses focus

2008-06-12 Thread Hans Bakker
On kubuntu 8.04 the strigiapplet is not installed by default so I had not
used it for some time. Today I installed because you asked how it worked now
and yes, the problem is still there. If you type something and pause one
second, the search results pop up and the focus of the input field is lost.

RE: [Bug 349923] Re: firefox has no media player installed by default

2009-03-27 Thread Hans Bakker
The website I mentioned as example needs a media player plugin that can
play .asf files.

I installed the mplayer firefox plugin (one of the suggestions of
firefox). I do understand that the way it is now means more flexibility,
but having a media player browser plugin installed by default means that
you have a fully usable system earlier.

Maybe it is an idea to let the user choose at installation or at first
run of firefox?

[Bug 415076] [NEW] Can not connect to vpn using plasma-widget-networkmanagement

2009-08-17 Thread Hans Bakker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plasma-widget-networkmanagement

I'm using Kubuntu Karmic (updated using update-manager -d from Jaunty)
and added an openvpn connection to knetworkmanager. When I click on the
systray-icon and click on the vpn connection, no connection is made. The
popup from the systray does not go away, so it looks like the dialog
does not even 'consume' the click.

After that I discovered that network-manager-openvpn was not installed,
so I installed that, but that did not make any difference.

[Bug 39413] Re: ubuntu doesn't notice when running on battery

2007-10-04 Thread Siebren Bakker
I have been getting this bug recently as well. I am running a 1.5yr old Compaq
Presario v2000 laptop. I've been using Ubuntu Gutsy since tribe 5 came out, and
within the last month, after a round of updates, gnome-power-manager says I am
running on AC power, with or without AC power present. Also, the battery tab
has completely disappeared from the gnome-power-manager preferences gui-window,
yet whenever I execute the
cat /proc/acpi/battery/*/state
command in a terminal, it correctly states whether the battery is charging,
charged, or discharging depending on it's charge state, and AC power status.

[Bug 83593] Re: All package removed from adept during "alsaplayer-esd" installation

2007-10-07 Thread Hans Bakker
i can confirm this. i have an daily updated kubuntu gutsy system and
adept removed digikam, kdm, etc etc when i only tried to remove the
kde4base-packages. Before I installed these kde4base* packages, kdm did
not depend on kde4base-data or something.

I asked on #kubuntu on IRC and "zeke" experienced that adept "took way
more out" than just cupsys* when he tried to removed the cupys*
packages. Afterwards he couldn't boot because of unwillingly removed
packages, and had to reinstall ubuntu.

[Bug 128214] coreutils: base64 utility missing

2007-07-25 Thread Steven Bakker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: coreutils

Coreutils (5.97) in current distributions does not contain the base64
utility, which is quite useful for a number of tasks (one is running the
"kvmadm" package). Version 5.97 is based on an upstream of over one year
old. Base64 has been included in coreutils since at least version 6.3
which came out in September 2006. Maybe it's time to grab a newer source
from upstream...? :-^

[Bug 163559] Missing AX24 lib and wrong version of other libs.

2007-11-18 Thread Ron Bakker
Public bug reported:

When installing the FBB package, error messages are displayed.

Other libs have the wrong version.

[Bug 199591] [NEW] snd-hda-intel does not work before reloading

2008-03-07 Thread Erik Bakker
Public bug reported:

I have a hardy installation on a Dell XPS M1330

The sound does not work after booting, but only starts working after a
'/sbin/alsa reload' which unloads modules and reloads exacly the same
modules again:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/eamelink# /sbin/alsa reload
Unloading ALSA sound driver modules: snd-hda-intel snd-hwdep snd-pcm-oss
snd-pcm snd-page-alloc snd-mixer-oss snd-seq-dummy snd-seq-oss snd-seq-midi
snd-rawmidi snd-seq-midi-event snd-seq snd-timer snd-seq-device (failed:
modules still loaded: snd-hda-intel snd-hwdep snd-pcm snd-page-alloc snd-timer).
Loading ALSA sound driver modules: snd-hda-intel snd-hwdep snd-pcm-oss snd-pcm
snd-page-alloc snd-mixer-oss snd-seq-dummy snd-seq-oss snd-seq-midi snd-rawmidi
snd-seq-midi-event snd-seq snd-timer snd-seq-device.

After this, the sound works fine. Before this, there is no sound
whatsoever, but also no errormessages. I can see the right channels in a
mixer, but there is just no sound output. Dmesg gives nothing grepping
on snd.

I have the 2.6.20-16-generic kernel (Kubuntu Feisty).

[Bug 500613] Re: Monitor brightness can not be controlled by hotkeys

2010-03-27 Thread Hans Bakker
xev correctly recognizes the buttons as XF86MonBrightnessDown and
XF86MonBrightnessUp.

In System Settings -> Keyboard & Mouse the display brightness keys are
correctly recognized as brightness up and down when clicking "Custom
key" for a random action and pressing those buttons.

This means that X11 and Qt do know that the buttons are pressed.

Probably the bug is in KDE, then?

Btw, this is a regression from Kubuntu 9.10.

[Bug 50692] Re: New Sony Vaios hotkeys don't work (fn_key polling)

2010-03-27 Thread Hans Bakker
I am running Kubuntu Lucid with all updates applied and lsmod | grep sony
returns:
sony_laptop33756 0

So I think the sony-laptop module is installed.

The Mode, Activity and Settings hotkeys above the normal keyboard are
filed in different bug reports
(http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25835 for the non-
recognized buttons and http://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTBUG-7063
for the shifted Activity buttons)

The zoom buttons do not work because of X11 not being able to use
keycodes with a value > 255
(https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11227)

The External display button simply has no action to connect it to. Maybe
an action to show the monitor setup KCM could be created?

2010-01-06 Thread Hans Bakker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Using Kubuntu 10.04 (fully updated) on Ati Radeon Mobility 4530 HD.

Blender responds very slowly and reports on the console:
do_wait: drmWaitVBlank returned -1, IRQs don't seem to be working correctly.
Try adjusting the vblank_mode configuration parameter.

[Bug 509329] [NEW] Both monitors are set too low resolution when second monitor is attached from system start

2010-01-18 Thread Hans Bakker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have a laptop (Sony Vaio VGN-SR51MF/S) which I use together with an external
monitor (Benq G2410HD). I'm running Kubuntu Lucid (development version, latest
updates installed).
The video card is an Ati Monility Radeon 4530 HD; i'm using the
xserver-xorg-video-ati drivers.

When looking at Screen settings, there is printed (Auto) after the
correct native resolutions for both the laptop screen as the external
monitor.

What the system does when booting while the HDMI cable is already
connected and the external monitor is switched on, is that it enables
the external monitor in clone mode (which is good), but it sets both
displays to 1024x768. This resolution is lower than both the native
resolution of my laptop (1280x800) and the native resolution of my
external monitor (which is 1920x1080).

What I would expect that if the system can detect which resolution is
the native resolution, it would enable clone mode and set the
resolutions to the respective *native resolutions* instead of setting
them both to 1024x768.

[Bug 497092] [NEW] suggest packages to be installed when a device is plugged in

2009-12-15 Thread Hans Bakker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

When an (usb) device is plugged in, the computer now only responds
correctly if the right software is installed. For example, it might
propose to import photos when a camera was attached or to sync music
files when a mp3 player was connected.

But if this software is not installed, the computer does not know what
to do with it and the user might not know what software to install.

In most cases, the user will know what to install, but it would be very
handy if the computer would suggest a few drawing programs (Krita for
example) when plugging in a tablet or if the computer would suggest to
install spacenavd when a 3DConnexxion SpaceNavigator was installed.

There could be written an addition to the Device Notifier Plasmoid
(possibly based on solid and packagekit?) that has a list of devices and
a list of corresponding packages that might be interesting for the user
that plugs in such a device. This addition might then list the device
that is plugged in and add an action to the plasmoid that lets the user
install the software.

Another idea is to notify the user via the Notification Plasmoid, like
this is already done for Konqueror (which proposes to install extra
packages for multimedia functionality).

The device list should probably be based on usb ids and not on device
classes, because some cameras or mp3 players are recognised as hard
drives, while they are more than that.

[Bug 525271] [NEW] Screen corruption on HDMI monitor when it is hotplugged

2010-02-21 Thread Hans Bakker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

When my external monitor is connected from the start and I change its
resolution to 1920x1080, the resolution change goes well.

When my system is already running, I hotplug the HDMI monitor (e.g. I
come home, get my laptop out of standby and plug the monitor in) and I
select 1920x1080, the resolution changes but the video is corrupted (it
"swizzles") , as if a wrong frequency is used.

I'm using Kubuntu Lucid, all updates installed, on a Sony Vaio VNG-
SR51MF/S laptop with a Benq G2410HD monitor.

[Bug 491076] [NEW] In systemsettings, a hotkey can't be assigned to switch the external monitor on, or to set the system in standby

2009-12-01 Thread Hans Bakker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

I am using Kubuntu 9.10 with updated KDE (4.3.3) packages.

In the Keyboard & Mouse part of systemsettings, hotkeys can be assigned
to quickly perform certain actions. I have a 'switch to external
monitor' and 'sleep' button on my laptop, but there is no action in the
hotkey configuration section I can assign those keys to.

Because of this, I have to use the system settings to turn on the
external monitor and I have to use the KMenu / the Power management
plasmoid to set the system in standby.

[Bug 50692] Re: New Sony Vaios hotkeys don't work (fn_key polling)

2009-11-29 Thread Hans Bakker
I have this problem, too, on my Vaio VGN-SR51MF/S. The volume hotkeys and
brightness hotkeys work, but the following hotkeys do not work:
- The zoom out / in buttons (Fn+F9; Fn+F10)
- The Mode hotkey, which in windows lets the user choose from three activity
hotkey sets (work, play and settings)
- The first 4 Activity hotkeys do work, but the fifth (the one which is most to
the right) does not
- The Settings hotkey which lets the user assign other actions to these sets

The Sleep and Switch LCD/External monitor do work, but in KDE, I could
not find a hotkey setting to which I could assign these hotkeys.

I attached my DSDT file, because the earlier mentioned forum thread
seams to be dead.

It looks strange but on keyup of Button 5 and the Settings button there
always first comes a ^ and a @-sign).

I can't assign the Mode-button, Button 5 and the Settings-button to any
action in KDE, maybe because they behave different?

[Bug 484408] [NEW] kdm sometimes tries to login without asking for credentials and then stops at the hard disk icon

2009-11-17 Thread Hans Bakker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

I am running Kubuntu 9.10 with KDE 4.3.3 from PPA. This bug was also
present before I used the updated KDE.

Sometimes when I boot my computer, KDM does not ask for my credentials
(I did not set up autologin). Instead it tries to log in on its own
showing the KDE loading screen, but then it stops after it showed the
hard disk icon (normally the tools icon and the loading other icons
would show up after the hard disk icon).

The computer does respond to user input, though, because I can press
Ctrl-Alt-Delete and click shutdown or reboot, so the mouse and keyboard
are working.

Rebooting the computer helps, but this is not the way it should behave
of course

So it is only activated on systems with low RAM.

I think that using xmodmap locally instead of upstream means that it
will not work for the average user. That's why I filed a bug at
freedesktop.org.

[Bug 505653] Re: make soprano depending on virtuoso-opensource

2010-01-29 Thread Hans Bakker
soprano-daemon now recommends virtuoso-server and virtuoso-drivers, but I think
this is not enough as it will complain about virtuoso not being installed until
it is installed.
As soprano is useless without virtuoso it should depend on it and not only
recommend it.

Strigi and Nepomuk need virtuoso as soprano-backend, and Nepomuk is
needed by Akonadi, so it seems quite logical not having to install
virtuoso by hand

[Bug 518481] [NEW] nepomuk:/ KIO slave does not work properly / does not exist

2010-02-07 Thread Hans Bakker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

I'm running Kubuntu Lucid, all updates installed and nepomuk + strigi
running.

The nepomuk KIO slave does not work properly. When clicking a nepomuk
search result that points to a folder, dolphin tries to open it with an
address like "nepomuk:/res/0d327547-d96a-4c1e-9727-f8ecb3cd9f7c/" and
shows an error on the status bar "File or folder nepomuk:/res/0d327547
-d96a-4c1e-9727-f8ecb3cd9f7c/ does not exist".

I would expect dolphin to open the found folder.

The nepomuksearch:/ and timeline:/ KIO slaves are there, the nepomuk:/
KIO slave does not seem to be available

[Bug 107738] Re: network-manager-pptp isn't installed by default

It is very intuitive that when you add a VPN-connection with network-
manager-kde (the vpn tab is there), you can't connect to it. Most people
will not think of installing this plugin as a solution for their

OpenVPN, but IIRC it worked that way with all vpn types. I also made a
pptp vpn connection and that did not work either. Does double-clicking
trigger the connect action? Because that doesn't seem intuitive.

I've the same issues with the onboard GeForce 7050 nvidia card. Both

onboard card on a ASUS M2N-VM (HDMI) motherboard.

I attached both the Xorg.0.log and the output of dmesg.

[Bug 482619] [NEW] samba often fails to download complete files

2009-11-14 Thread Hans Bakker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

I am running Kubuntu 9.10, all packages up to date.
The version of the samba package and related packages is 3.4.0-3ubuntu5.1

My problem is that when I copy large files from my university network to
my laptop (using e.g. dolphin), the copying stops and I get an error
that the file could not be read. The file is still available then. The
KDE file copying service has no resume functionality when I try to copy
it again, so this is very frustrating.

When I use smbget -r to download a file, it stops downloading too after a
while, but I can resume it using this tool.
The error smbget returns is "Can't read 64000 bytes at offset X"
(X being some large number depending how much of the file is downloaded
already).

I did not try to copy files to the university network. I connect to that
network using openvpn.
