Re: [Bug 348030] Re: Echo till mouse moves

2009-06-23 Thread artsci2
The issue seems to be that if you are already playing a file and then let the
mouse cursor rest on a file name the player will play the current file and the
one the pointer is on.

The echo I reported was because I was just clicking the file and letting the
pointer stay on the file. So the same file was playing and also being run
because the pointer was on it.

2008-05-21 Thread artsci2
Hey Sebasian,

I'm sorry to have not responded to you. My hard drive is damaged and also a
second one on a different machine after I installed SUSE on it before switching
to the final release of Hardy Heron. It seems there is some trouble with the
SUSE disck management which make it impossible to load an operating sysem after
Novelles system has been on the hars drive. I'v tried using the WD hard drive
tools and the Maxtor Max blast to re-configure at the lowest level. Still these
drives will not load after installing an os. (they give "error loading OS"
message)

I'll try again as soon as I can get a new hard drive.

Re: [Bug 492349] Re: Connecting at public WiFi when using bootable pen drive

2010-01-21 Thread artsci2
Hey Guys,

I'm at a coffee shop right now. Panera in Kalamazoo, MI, USA.
Toshiba Laptop Satellite A205-S5804 with mem upgrade to 2Gb.

Starting from Windows.
The wireless network is automatically recognized with tray icon indicating www
conection.
I start Internet explorer and instead of my google search home page this one
appears:
http://paneralogin6.wanderingwifi.com/login
After clicking the login button the next page is:
http://www.panerabread.com/wifi/connected/home.php?bc=3724&pid=1
After that I can click the home button to get to my home page.

Restarting Windows and using Google Chrome gave the same results with the
exception of an error report for the missing Adobe Flash plugin.
Clicking "login" got me to the second page and on to www.

I then downloaded Firefox for windows ver 3.5.7.
During install I said no to make firefox the defaul and clicked import nothing
from user settings.
After installation I said yes to start firefox and it was able to go on the web
directly without going through the panera login.
(I included the above step to show there must be some authentication of the
computer rateher than the broser from the login process"

After restarting Windows again I launched Firefox. This took me to the panera
loging.
Clicking "login" button brought me to the 2nd panera page and then I was able
to go into www.

Next I will try using the Freshly installed Ubuntu 9.10 with all updates
( as of morning 21Jan10) installed as dual boot on the internal HD.

Re: [Bug 492349] Re: Connecting at public WiFi when using bootable pen drive

2010-01-21 Thread artsci2
(Continued from my previous message this morning.)

I will try using the Freshly installed Ubuntu 9.10 with all updates ( as of
morning 21Jan10) installed as dual boot on the internal HD.
After booting Ubuntu I had to go up to the toobar icon and drop down the menue
for connecting to the wireless network. This seemed to work quickly and without
errors.

Starting Firefox gave the usual default local home page:
http://start.ubuntu.com/9.10/

I then tried to go to www.google.com by typing directly into the address
bar. This generated a redirection to the Panera login Screen. Something
that did not happen previously. Clicking the "login" button brought me
to the second Panera page and onto WWW. I was then able to get to
www.google.com.

Before rebooting I tested Epiphany and Galeon web browsers. Epiphany
went directly to WWW and Galeon poped up with a warning that "myportal
is not a registered protocol". Clicking OK left Galeon with "myportal:"
in the address bar. I typed in "www.google.com" and was able to do a
google search.

To test that an attempt at reaching the WWW is triggering redirection to
the Panera login, I set the homepage in Firefox to www.google.com and
restarted the computer.

This time the wireless was automatically recognized and when I started
Firefox the Panera login page came up. 'Went to 2nd Panera page and on
to WWW.

Next test is on a bootable pen drive created from this U 9.10 live disk.
Media is a Sandisk 8Gig.
After unsucessful attemp to fomat using the USB creator I wnet to Gparted and
deleted the partition and created a new ext2 primary.
Then trying USB creator a "volume needs to be formatted" message appeared
regarding the /dev/sbc.
I was met with "DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.NotFound: The
given volume was not found" again after clicking the "Format" button.
Selecting the second choice, /dev/sdc1, in the "Disk to Use" menue gives a "not
enough free space" message.
Clicking format caused the . Damn! it seems the problem was that a file
browser window was open from the previous step. I closed it and the format
completed.
Now the /dev/sdc1 choice has returned and it's showing 7.5Gig with 7.5 free
space.
Clicking "Make Startup Disk" resulted in a "startup disk completed you can now
boot on other computers" message.
So I restarted and pressed F12 to select the USB drive.
The system restarted and I needed to pull down the menu for networks and select
"Panera" again it connected very quickly without errors.
Starting Firefox the page that wasopened was the locally stored
file:///usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/index.html
That came after some address that starts with "chrome."
Trying www.google.com was redirected to the Panera login page...
.duuuh
So, it looks like you guys fixed the issue I was crying about or I was just
doing something wrong in my first few attempts last month.

Displaying the page wont need connection to internet.

Whereas if you use www.google.com or any other web page as your homepage
, it will need to connect to the internet.

Hence you are not facing the redirection with
http://start.ubuntu.com/9.10/  .

If you set any other web page as your home page it will redirect.

So  , If I understood you correctly, it is now working correctly if you
use any page other than http://start.ubuntu.com/9.10/ ?

[Bug 423266] [NEW] 3D graph very slow to recalculate

2009-09-02 Thread artsci2
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

3D surface plot plots seem to take excessive time to redraw. (minutes
instead of moments) they also are very slow to make the initial draw. I
believe there is probaly some inefficient algorythm being used to
project the 3D data onto the 2D plane for screen display.

Re: [Bug 348030] Re: Echo till mouse moves

2009-09-09 Thread artsci2
Sebastian,

The echo issue is from the "preview" or "sample" feature that
automatically starts when the mouse cursor is placed over a file's icon.
This preview feature does not disable when a file is playing. So if I
double click a file named SONG1 it starts to play. Then if the cursor is
still hovering on SONG1 the preview of SONG1 begins to play on top of
the original playing of the file causing an echo effect.

If the cursor is hovering over SONG2 while SONG1 is playing both files
will play.

Would it be better to look at this as a feature request?
Could a preference selection be added that would allow these choices:
1> Always Preview Song when mouse cursor is on icon
2> Preview Song only whan there is no file currently playing
3> No Preiview playing of files

Re: [Bug 492349] Re: Connecting at public WiFi when using bootable pen drive

2010-01-13 Thread artsci2
How it works here is not quite what you are saying. The wireless connecion is
auto detectedand then the connecion is established when I select connect.  It's
only when I open the web browser in windows my homepage seeting is somhow
ignored and insead the login page for Panera coffee shop pops up.  I hen click
the login buton and a second panera page appears. Only atfer that second page
appears can I succesfully go to my homepage.

Is there a way I can record the traffic as I log in on windows to send you guys
for a look? Maybe one of you would recocnize the command ha makes he web
browser ignore its home page setting?

Could i be that the default homepage on Ub is an offline page so the process is
not triggered when opening the web brouser at the coffee shop? I'm up in a
forest wih only a small town which has no Panera coffee shop so I can't try it
till Monday...

I reported this because it's a litle embarrassing to show off a "better system
than windows" and have the firs step (ataching to wireless internet) be so
clunky with cut and pasing of adresses hat I could only get by using windows.

I'm not sure if this is really something network-manager can handle...
NM only knows that it's connected to an AP, and that IP address
assignment has happened...

In essence, what you're suggesting is that when a user connects to an
access point protected by a proxy requiring login, that the system
automatically start a web browser, forcing the login screen to display
right away.

I changed this Importance to Wishlist, as this is not really a bug.

@artsci2

OK, If I understand it correctly, you're just suggesting that when FF is
started, it automatically display the login screen immediately?

I assumed you also wanted the system to automatically start the browser
when a connect to a proxy-protected sight occurs.

If it's the former ( browser auto-displays login screen when connected
to coffee-shop-proxy-protected AP ), then this is reported against the
wrong package, it should be a bug against FF.

Re: [Bug 492191] Re: multiboot systems fail at grub when a drive containinng an os is removed

2010-01-16 Thread artsci2
I would be happy to, but right now I am on the road away from my external USB
hard drive that I was using. Following is the what I can give for now.

I need to dual boot with windows on my laptop because a critical program is
only available for that OS. ("Michlet" a ship hull drag calculation tool) The
internal HD is cramped for space so an external HD serves to boot Ubuntu.

When I load Ubuntu on the 20Gig Toshiba USB hard drive the default location for
installing  grub is on the internal windows hard drive. After installation the
USB drive must be connected or the computer will give an error (I've forgotten
what code the error is) and drop down to a command prompt. Reebooting
after reconnecting the USB hard drive made everything worke as expected. This
seemed to be merely a step in grub that looks for the Ubuntu drive and gives
and error because the drive is not found.

Although it does take some programming, the fix seems small enough for it to be
a paper cut. If grub looks for a drive and does not find one of several, it
should just note which system is not available because of a drive not found and
(instead of dropping to a command prompt) display the valid OS choices.
