[Bug 362980] Re: wireless adapter not found on dell mini9 / u8.10 / kernel 2.6.27-11

2009-04-22 Thread anton_es
thanks, i will do the lsmod.I did have the restricted driver installed
and like I said, everything (!) is working under the old kernel
2.6.24-9. when the update manager switched me to the first 2.6.24-11 and
the network manager got its updates (a few weeks ago) all the problems
started. first wired did not work anymore (couldn't find my router) and
now wired works but my mini behaves as if there is NO wireless card
installed anymore under the latest kernel. will add lsmod output later.
but to make clear again: wired & wireless DO WORK under 2.4.26-9.

[Bug 320268] Re: Wired network does not work after 8.10 upgrade

2009-02-03 Thread anton_es
hi, I'm using a dell netbook (911 first edition) dual boot xp & 8.10.
since I upgraded to the latest kernel delivered automatically through software
update I can no longer connect to my wired connection AT ALL. It's exactly like
described above, ONLY I got a LinkSys Router. Windows can connect, Linux the NM
starts but times out and says that it doesn't get any IP-adress. Can I revert
to an old kernel without problems ?
this is major annoying.
Wouldn't think that something like this is even possible.ubuntu 8(!) and it
can't connect to a router and get an IP adress ?

it says
nameserver "192.168.0.1" although my router is on 192.168.1.1
my dhclient.conf is empty, meaning everything is commented out.

[Bug 320268] Re: Wired network does not work after 8.10 upgrade

2009-02-04 Thread anton_es
well, unfortunately I don't even have the old kernel. I was using wireless and
after deciding that the new kernel seems stable I removed the old one. then I
went home, connected to my wired network and vola nothing. I can't get it
to see my router or get any IP from eth0.
I searched around and tried all the different dhclient commands,
starting/stopping interfaces ... nothing...I'm lucky my neighbour has an
unsecure wireless lan :) or I could not use the machine.
The same happens at work where we have Cisco routers with DHCP, my netbook
worked without problems there before, so we can assume that it's not something
the router does but rather the network manager doesn't do or know.

I tried the "supersede nameserver" option as well and it changed nothing.
let's hope for another update that miraculously solves this just liked it got
broken.

2009-02-04 Thread anton_es
ah, it seems it doesn't like the option in the dhclient.conf:

sudo dhclient

/etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf line 53: no option named nameserver in space dhcp
supersede nameserver 192.
  ^
/etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf line 53: semicolon expected.

^

but i did like described, i added the line
supersede nameserver 192.168.1.1
to the end of the file. so should i use '' to encase them and end it with an ; ?

[Bug 362980] [NEW] wireless adapter not found on dell mini9 / u8.10 / kernel 2.6.27-11

2009-04-17 Thread anton_es
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

i had the following situation under ubuntu 8.10:
kernel 2.6.27-11 wireless works / wired not able to connect to my router
kernel 2.6.27-9 both work

after a recent update / don't know which /
I can boot into the newest kernel 2.6.27-11 and I can use wired again, meaning
it is present and also finds my router and gets an ip-address and lease
BUT: now the wireless adapter is not found anymore and I can't connect to the
wireless network
it works on the older kernel 2.6.27-9 without any problems (glad I kept it) so
I don't think i deactivated wlan via software. I checked that wlan is present
in bios, too (it must be since it works under the old kernel)

i added an output of daemon.log.
it states in daemon.log that some dell kill switch has been found and it cant
start my wlan
(at least I think so).

[Bug 211560] [NEW] new kernel 14 and last updates

2008-04-03 Thread anton_es
Public bug reported:

i have ubuntu beta1 running with all updates. nvidia-driver activated.
after upgrading to the new kernel 14 i have only problems (no matter which
kernel i choose at the startup):
1) orginally software update proposed only a partial update, new kernel without
restricted drivers
2) i lost the nvidia/compiz settings
3) after reboot the GUI loaded the login window but I was caught in a loop and
the user login screen never appeared, only the background and working mouse
were visible.
- i reinstalled ubuntu from the ground up
1) applied all updates
2) enabled the restricted drivers
- all seemed to work fine but as soon as i want to start the login window from
the menu, it hangs again and I can never login again thru the GUI, only command
line works
- reinstalled again
1) enabled restricted driver
2) applied all updates
3) installed a few apps, nothing major (skype, cheese)
4) tried to alter my desktop settings, came to the login screen -> hang

I now removed it from the system awaiting the final release, maybe then it
works.
before the major upgrades including the 14 kernel my system was working fine
and was moderately stable.

[Bug 206572] [NEW] DBus ERROR - No Reply

2008-03-25 Thread anton_es
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus-cd-burner

lsb_release -rd:
Description:Ubuntu hardy (development branch)
Release:8.04
BETA 1
new install on sda, all updates applied, "normal" installation

libnautilus-burn4 2.22.0 (runtime library) installed.

laptop:
Dell Vostro 1400 with built in:
DVD+-RW DS-8W1P

1) when I insert blank media NO "write-2-dvd/cd" dialog pops up.
no automatic program is launched ..

2)
(see screenshot)

i open nautilus and choose GO-> CD/DVD Creator
OR
i open Places-> CD/DVD Creator

with or without a blank media inserted -> a Nautilus window appears but i can't
add any files, it "stays" in discovery mode..
after some time the following errormessage is displayed:

Couldn't display "burn:///".
Error: DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply.
Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the
message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or
the network connection was broken.
Please select another viewer and try again.

after that every new try of it just displays the errormessage after some time
but never again the original nautilus window.
you have to log off/on to get the frozen window again.

3)
I have a network drive at home, western digital, prebuilt with an 500GB HD,
connected via 100MBit lan.
it is discovered under Networks -> Workgroup (windows) -> Shared Files and gets
automatically mounted on the desktop
as expected. after working some time with it and then pausing the network drive
goes into "quiet or standby" mode.

under win-xp/2000/98 it's no problem to wake it up after a new file
operation was issued.

ubuntu: alpha5,6 and now beta1: it does NOT wake up, it cannot be reached
anymore i get the same error as above:
Couldn't display "Shared Files on WD Netcenter".
Error: DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply.
Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the
message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or
the network connection was broken.
Please select another viewer and try again.

if I wake up the hd with windows, ubuntu still does not find it. only a
reboot and re-mount solves the problem until it freezes again after a
few minutes.

2008-03-25 Thread anton_es
update: i changed networks (from work: only http and websense active, no access

now cd/dvd creator works.

the error with the network drive only happens after x amount of time, i
