[Bug 296160] [NEW] Incorrect Fat16 reformat

2008-11-09 Thread Zerocool3001
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

When creating a bootable usb usb-creator accepts, and successfully
installs, on a fat16 formatted device. However, a fat16 formatted device
cannot boot and fails out with "error loading operating system" message
on startup. A fat32 formatted device run through usb-creator works
correctly.

Run on updated 8.10

[Bug 296163] [NEW] Improper allocation of persistent filesystem

2008-11-09 Thread Zerocool3001
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

When creating a persistent usb slider bar for selecting "storage space
for files and settings" does not allocate space to filesystem. For
instance, on a 1GB usb stick, setting the slider to the maximum (~245mb)
gives 50mb of free space in home directory upon reboot. Setting the
slider to the minimum (~128mb) gives 11mb of free space in home
directory. Free space (at least in the latter case) appears allocated
only to /tmp.

This error causes not only malfunction of apps (run out of space), but
it also does not allow for saving files, or upgrading the system. For
further details, contact me.

[Bug 377543] [NEW] netatalk fails to mount "Home Directory"

2009-05-17 Thread Zerocool3001
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: netatalk

Netatalk built from source to both include encryption does not allow mounting
of default share "Home Directory" from a 10.5.x Mac. Custom shares can be
mounted. Attempting to mount "Home Directory" gives "The volume 'Home
Directory' could not be mounted".

[Bug 377543] Re: netatalk fails to mount "Home Directory"

2009-05-17 Thread Zerocool3001
Actually, its not the same bug. Connecting from Mac OS 10.5.x does not
allow clear text passwords, so this bug affects netatalk compiled with
encryption. The bug only occurs after the connection has been
established and a dialogue is presented asking which volumes to mount.

P.S. I have not tried the newest source available on Sourceforge

[Bug 377543] Re: netatalk fails to mount "Home Directory"

2009-05-17 Thread Zerocool3001
Sorry, I was probably unclear in my initial description. I've tried both
modifying the source deb from Jaunty's source repository to compile with
encryption and compiling from the source at sourceforge
(http://netatalk.sourceforge.net). They both produced the same error. I
also tried a posted solution in one of the forums I linked to which
involved removing all the AppleDB, AppleDesktop, and AppleDouble files
on the linux host's home directory. That didn't help either.

I may be wrong here, but my trouble started when I upgraded to Jaunty
from Hardy. I had previously had a working netatalk server running from
a modified source deb to include encryption. When I recompilied I used
the package version for Jaunty with no success. I don't think encryption
is included in the netatalk package because its not FOSS. I could be
wrong.

I'll go barreling through the logs in a bit, when I have time, although
I don't really know what I'm looking for. I'll see if I can turn
something up.

[Bug 154401] Re: gnome keyboard layout question at each login

It would seem this problem occurs when installing, then uninstalling
xserver-xgl. I would imagine most of the problems caused here are due to
that scenario.

Actually CUPS discover is turned on in most Leopard and Snow Leopard

fixes won't help.

[Bug 465916] Re: CUPS DNS-SD (Bonjour/mDNS/Zeroconf/Avahi) not broadcasting

2010-06-10 Thread Zerocool3001
You're right about needing different packages (which is presumably why
this bug has gone largely dead). The .service files however, are just
descriptions of the what is being served, they don't initiate the
serving itself. Since Avahi does not currently implement the API's that
CUPS 1.4 uses to call libdns, it cannot properly serve our CUPS
printers.

It seems like the only fix at this point would be to find a libdns
package that supports the needed API's and then have CUPS statically
linked to it, or to compile CUPS 1.4 with code from CUPS 1.3 that uses
the old API's that Avahi can handle (see Till's post).

Thawn: I've tried using CUPS discovery on two Macs, both of which had it
turned on by default. Neither is able to see a CUPS shared printer.

[Bug 465916] Re: CUPS DNS-SD (Bonjour/mDNS/Zeroconf/Avahi) not broadcasting

2010-11-18 Thread Zerocool3001
Thawn: To respond to your question from some time ago (post #40), the
default configuration file for Snow Leopard (which I am using) contains
the line

BrowseLocalProtocols CUPS dnssd

My guess is that the local instance of dnssd picks up shared printers on
the network and passes them to CUPS. It may be that adding the
BrowseRemoteProtocols line bypasses this method and instead checks the
network directly for CUPS shared printers.

However this solution still requires editing a configuration file on the
client side, something most users will not want to do. While it may work
in the meantime, it would be a problem for users to do this whenever
they wanted to connect to a printer shared from an Ubuntu server.

Lorenz: The problem here (and the solution) lies within the Avahi
implementation. It hasn't kept up with the changes to the CUPS library
in 1.4. Likely the only solution here is update the Avahi package to use
the new API's. However, seeing as there has been no action on this bug,
I don't know that it will be fixed anytime soon.

[Bug 465916] Re: CUPS DNS-SD (Bonjour/mDNS/Zeroconf/Avahi) not broadcasting

2010-11-18 Thread Zerocool3001
Jouke: According to the bug report filed with Avahi
(http://www.avahi.org/ticket/303), the dns-ds.h currently in the Avahi
package does not use the API's for CUPS 1.4 (the details are on the
avahi bug report). The dns-sd.h included in Mac OS X seems to use these
correct API's and functions with CUPS 1.4.

It seems that the simple solution (as the bug maintainer suggests) would
be to include the solution from Apple's dns-sd.h. However, looking at
the comments on that bug shows that people don't agree with this
solution (for what appears to be a dislike of Apple). Until dns-sd.h
uses the API's in CUPS 1.4 (and to be used in future versions of CUPS),
Apple's Bonjour would seem to be the only dnssd implementation that will
work with CUPS.

[Bug 465916] Re: CUPS DNS-SD (Bonjour/mDNS/Zeroconf/Avahi) not broadcasting

2010-11-30 Thread Zerocool3001
I'm a little confused. Does CUPS 1.4 (or 1.3) support Bonjour via Avahi?
It was my understanding that Avahi was simply an open source
implementation of the dns-sd protocol which Apple calls Bonjour. If this
is the case wouldn't this mean Avahi will not function with CUPS until
Avahi uses the new protocols and this problem would continue to exist in
1.5?

[Bug 465916] Re: CUPS DNS-SD (Bonjour/mDNS/Zeroconf/Avahi) not broadcasting

2010-11-30 Thread Zerocool3001
That's what I thought. However, since Avahi is not using the correct
API's, wouldn't this problem continue to exist in CUPS 1.5 or is is
there a planned work around?

The reason I ask is because it seems to me that this problem wont be
solved until Avahi makes use of the correct API's.
