[Bug 1728354] [NEW] ntfs: unsupported reparse point

2017-10-29 Thread Winfried PLappert
Public bug reported:

I recently updated my Windows-10 to the 1709 edition. Scanning the file
system with Ubuntu, I get "unsupported reparse point" errors. Searching
the web indicates that ntfs cannot handle certain files.

I am running Ubutu-Mate 17.10:

uname -r: 4.13.0-16-generic

lsb_release -rcid:
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 17.10
Release:17.10
Codename: artful

I include a file which runs ntfsinfo on a file where I get the "unsupported
reparse point" message:
sudo ntfsinfo -F /Windows/hh.exe /dev/sda1 >unsupported_reparse_point.txt

while mounted: I issue ls -l /Windows/hh.exe
ls -l Windows/hh.exe
lrwxrwxrwx 2 .. .. 25 Sep 29 14:41 Windows/hh.exe -> unsupported reparse point

I expect to see either a resolved link or a length for the file in
question.

[Bug 1728354] Re: ntfs: unsupported reparse point

2017-11-01 Thread Winfried PLappert
Hello Jean-Pierre, thank you for time analyzing the ntfs issue.

According to dpkg -l, my ntfs packages have the following versions:

libfsntfs120170315-1build1
libntfs-3g872 1:2016.2.22AR.2-2
ntfs-3g 1:2016.2.22AR.2-2

When I am trying to compile the ntfs-3g-system-compression package, configure
complains that
libntfs-3g is not new enough: libntfs-3g >= 2017.3.23, so I am a bit stuck here.

Likewise the plugins have no deb pacakge version and want package levels
newer than the ones available in Ubuntu 17.10.

Hello Jean-Pierre,
installing the plugin from
http://jp-andre.pagesperso-orange.fr/advanced-ntfs-3g.html#download and
installing it at the correct place did the trick! Thank you. You might consider
this solution for general availability, since more and more people will have to
face WIndows-10, if they want to face it at all. You may close this bug report.

occurred. I really don't know what it is. But since this 1610, I thought

2016-05-23 Thread Winfried PLappert
gnome-software itself does not seem to do anything when I ask to install
a software package. The only thing which changes is the indicator
"pending" goes on, but that is it. When I do the install via apt-get
install synapse (the actual example), synapse installs okay and works.
Hmmm.

[Bug 1577322] [NEW] gwakeonlan package broken in xenial (1604)

2016-05-02 Thread Winfried PLappert
Public bug reported:

The package gwakeonlan is completely broken in xenial (1604). The deb
file is called gwakeonlan_0.5.1-1.1_all.deb and has a length of 2230
bytes, dated Oct 24 2015.

The correct old version from the 1510 release is named
gwakeonlan_0.5.1-1_all.deb, has a length of 25808 bytes and is dated Oct
25 2010.

Don't get confused about some automatic attachments, since I removed the
incorrect version and installed the old version with gdebi manually.

[Bug 1576697] Re: package mate-tweak dependency list is incomplete

2016-04-29 Thread Winfried PLappert
If package gir1.2-gtk-3.0 is not installed and mate-tweak is called from the
command line, it produces the following error message:
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/mate-tweak", line 39, in

  File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/gi/__init__.py", line 102, in

ValueError: Namespace Gdk not available

Installing gir1.2-gtk-3.0 remedies the situation and mate-tweak starts
ok.

obviously got caught in state where the repositories were in an unlean

[Bug 1586736] [NEW] mate-control-center crashes because the rest of mate is on level 1.14, but control-center isn't

2016-05-29 Thread Winfried PLappert
Public bug reported:

The repositories contain inconsistent package levels: most of the
packages in ubuntu-mate-1610 are on 1.14 level, but some are not, mate-
control-center being one of them. This produces conflicting environments
and consequently all sorts of crashes.

Here is a list of packages which I have installed which are still on
1.12 level:

libmate-menu2 1.12.0-1 amd64
libmate-slab0 1.12.1-2 amd64
libmate-window-settings1 1.12.1-2 amd64
mate-control-center 1.12.1-2 amd64

mate-desktop-environment-core 1.12.0+1 all
mate-menus 1.12.0-1 amd64
python-mate-menu 1.12.0-1 amd64

Please fix -- or hold the repositories back until at least control-
center ist worked correctly.

2016-04-10 Thread Winfried PLappert
I can recover the upgrade by rebooting and patiently applying "sudo apt-
get dist-upgrade" and following the suggestions on the screen. But the
upgrade should be able to run error free -- by changing the sequence of
installing certain dependencies.

libgcrypt20:amd64 only depends on lib6 and libpgp-error0, which in
itself only depends on libc6.

1.) I removed all the i386 packages, used for skype and google-earth and did a

[Bug 1560797] Re: package systemd-sysv 225-1ubuntu9.1 failed to install/upgrade: libgcrypt20 was unconfigured during 15.10 to 16.04 upgrade

2016-04-13 Thread Winfried PLappert
I compared an update of a 1510-amd64 only system - the one from above
(ubuntu-mate-15.10-desktop-amd64.iso) with a the same system, added the
libgcrypt20:i386 packages.

1.) There is hardly any de-configuring going in the "pure" amd64 system, only
(plymouth and ifupdown).
2.) in the amd64 + libgcrypt20:i386 system:
De-configuring plymouth (0.9.0-0ubuntu9) ...
De-configuring ifupdown (0.7.54ubuntu1.3) ..
.
De-configuring libgcc1:i386 (1:5.2.1-22ubuntu2) ...
De-configuring gcc-5-base:amd64 (5.2.1-22ubuntu2) ...
De-configuring libc6:i386 (2.21-0ubuntu4.1) ...
De-configuring libgpg-error0:amd64 (1.19-2) ...
De-configuring libgcrypt20:i386 (1.6.3-2ubuntu1.1) ...

Why is this deconfiguring happening? The deconfiguring is the the
apparent reason for the upgrade failure.

I downloaded the apt source for ubuntu-mate-1510-amd64, modified the two
lines in apt_pkg/packagemanager.cc, rebuild the lot according to
http://askubuntu.com/questions/81870/how-to-download-modify-build-and-
install-a-debian-source-package, and installed it locally on my ubuntu-
mate-1510-amd64 system.

I did a check that libgcrypt20:i386 was installed, did a "do-release-
upgrade -d" (or the local version of it) and it ran through
successfully!

Congratulations to David K. for fixing a 5 year old bug!!

The question is: was the apt package patch applied BEFORE the
distribution upgrade? I doubt it, if you use the graphical interface.
update-manager does not give you a chance to update first and then do a
distribution upgarde.

I better correct my statement at #62. I tested it just now and it is
incorrect. Upgrade inside wily (1510) comes first, and then distribution
upgrade.

[Bug 990148] [NEW] cannot hibernate from Kubuntu "leave" menu

2012-04-27 Thread Winfried PLappert
Public bug reported:

When I try to get my PC into hibernation mode, the system just locks the
screen and that's it.

This is a new behaviour, I upgraded a day ago to Kubuntu 12.04LTS. in
Kubuntu 11.10 the process "Kickoff application launcher" -> Leave ->
Hibernate worked as expected.

I can force the system to hibernate properly by entering "sudo/usr/sbin/
pm-hibernate" from a command line.

The other functions "Kickoff application launcher" -> Leave, namely
"sleep", "restart" and "shutdown" are working properly.

BTW: A fresh install of Kubuntu 12.04LTS shows the same faulty behaviour :( .

Bug report can be closed. I quote here for reference:
...

You can also enable the hibernate option in the menus. To do that, use your
favorite text editor to create
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla . Add
the following to the file and save:

[Re-enable hibernate by default]

[Bug 1470904] [NEW] deborphan -d -a -n reports dependencies incorrectly in a multiarchitecture environment

2015-07-02 Thread Winfried PLappert
Public bug reported:

when issuing a "deborphan -dan on my system, some packages show
incorrect dependencies:

Example 1:
libasound2-plugins:i386 (main/libs)
  pulseaudio:amd64

libasound2-plugins:amd64 (main/libs)
  pulseaudio:amd64

Example 2:
gstreamer1.0-plugins-base:i386 (main/libs)
  brasero:amd64
  rhythmbox:amd64
  gstreamer1.0-plugins-good:amd64

gstreamer1.0-plugins-base:amd64 (main/libs)
  brasero:amd64
  rhythmbox:amd64
  gstreamer1.0-plugins-good:amd64

I am pretty sure that these amd64 packages do NOT depend on the i386 versions
but on the amd64 version, as shown above - part of the original output.

I will attach the output file of deborphan -dan and the file
/var/lib/dpkg/status (compressed)

2016-02-08 Thread Winfried PLappert
Additional information:
1.) I did a fresh install, updated the kernel and rebooted.
2.) I manually upgraded lightdm and ubuntu-mate-core immediately => everything
ok.
3.) sudo apt-get upgrade and everything is fine, no bug to be seen.
4.) Obviously the order in which the upgrade is applied is important. Something
got screwed up with the automatic ordering of applying the updates.

in 6.) above change " have of ubuntu mate" to " half of ubuntu mate".

module-init-tools should really reference libkmod2, which is actually
installed. Why there are such strange dependencies I don't know.

 module-init-tools provides service for

alsa-base
bluez
initramfs-tools
linux-image-3.16.0-62-generic (my installed kernel)
linux-sound-base
powermgmt-base
ubuntu-drivers-common

but dpkg -L module-init-tools is really only:
/usr/share/doc/module-init-tools which is a symbolic link to
ls -l /usr/share/doc/module-init-tools
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Feb 28 09:14 /usr/share/doc/module-init-tools ->
libkmod2

strange!

module-init-tools depends on the following packages:
dpkg
kmod
libkmod2

[Bug 1550922] Re: dist-upgrade from Ubuntu Mate 14.04.4 LTS to 16.04 LTS (Beta1) fails

2016-02-29 Thread Winfried PLappert
I have managed to bypass this problem by manipulation the Python code of
the upgrade process. But it is far easier to bypass it properly by
setting up a config file in /etc/update-manager/release-
upgrades.d/*.cfg.

According to http://askubuntu.com/questions/425355/error-authenticating-
some-packages-while-upgrade one needs to create a file /etc/update-
manager/release-upgrades.d/unauth.cfg with the contents:

[Bug 1550922] Re: dist-upgrade from Ubuntu Mate 14.04.4 LTS to 16.04 LTS (Beta1) fails

2016-02-29 Thread Winfried PLappert
In order to check for the above condition, one need a precursor script
(as root) before the update proper, which goes along these lines:

#! /bin/sh
if [[ -n $(dpkg --get-selections | grep module-init-tools | cut -f1) ]]
then
cat <<- EOF >/etc/update-manager/release-upgrades.d/unauth.cfg
[Distro]
AllowUnauthenticated=yes
EOF

[Bug 1550922] Re: dist-upgrade from Ubuntu Mate 14.04.4 LTS to 16.04 LTS (Beta1) fails

2016-02-29 Thread Winfried PLappert
1.) I have reset my virtual machine to a state after 14.04 kernel update.
2.) I have created the file /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades.d/unauth.cfg
as described above.
3.) I started do-release-upgrade and it does NOT fail any more with the message
of unauthenticated packages.

4.) This can be considered a circumvention (for the time being).
5.) After the upgrade to 16.04 you can safely remove package module-init-tools,
since the dependencies have been changed (in the other packages) to
"module-init-tool | kmod". "|" is OR, which can be satisfied by kmod in 16.04.

[Bug 1550741] Re: Upgrade failed - unauthenticated package (module-init-tools)

2016-02-29 Thread Winfried PLappert
Circumvention, copied from Bug #1550922:

Set up a config file in /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades.d/*.cfg.

According to http://askubuntu.com/questions/425355/error-authenticating-
some-packages-while-upgrade one needs to create a file /etc/update-
manager/release-upgrades.d/unauth.cfg with the contents:

[Distro]
AllowUnauthenticated=yes

Tested and works.

[Bug 917922] Re: after hibernation, sometimes system fails to restore the old state (before hiberanation

2012-01-18 Thread Winfried PLappert
A few comments:
1.) I checked a few more /var/log/syslog* and /var/log/kern.log* files. It is
always process name "plasma-desktop" which gets hits.
2.) I never had this problem as long as I ran Ubuntu - but I decided to go away
from Ubuntu because of the Unity desktop. I could not handle this new desktop
design.
3.) Somestimes the system bombs out after loading 100% of the saved pages from
the swap file. It immediately falls back in to the BIOS and the reboots
normally.
