2008-11-11 Thread Warner White
I can't find ~/.xsession-errors.

In the file system I can find gnome2 and the launchers I've added to
that panel, but I don't see anything about the top panel. Is it called
gnome1 ? Or what?

I'm wondering if somehow some crucial files got deleted.

I use a Sprint Centro--that is, a Palm based smart phone. I very much
want to be able to hotsync it in Ubuntu. I still have to hang onto
Windows for that purpose. What a drag!

I disagree. Palm only recently announced that it would be dropping
support for the PalmOS. There are a number of people what have PalmOS
devices, such as anyone who owns a Palm Trio cell phone or a Palm TX
handheld. I know of at least 200 (the nursing department at my
University), a few friends with Palm cell phones, and my Dad.

[Bug 282491] Re: [intrepid] impossible to sync palm pilot device

2008-11-08 Thread Warner White
I have just started using Ubuntu and am trying to convert all my Windows
stuff to it. I found the above work-around very helpful. Now I can
connect and use J-Pilot with my PDA. But there's a problem. It only
works one-way. I can put stuff on my J-Pilot and sync and find it on my
Centro, but not the other way round. In addition, what I put on J-Pilot
disappears in the process.

The read out from J-Pilot says

Doing a slow sync.
Syncing DatebookDB
Syncing AddressDB
Syncing MemosDB-PMem
synctime: Palm OS version 5.49
synctime: Setting the time on the pilot... Done
MemosDB-PMem.pdb (Creator ID 'PMem') is up to date, fetch skipped.
Fetching 'AddressDB' (Creator ID 'addr')... OK
Fetching 'DatebookDB' (Creator ID 'date')... Failed, unable to back up database
DatebookDB
ReadDBList returned = -1
palmos_error = 0
dlp_strerror is No error
Finished.

It's just not doing the Datebook, and I wonder if I were to make changes
to the Memos whether that would get done either.

This may be a different problem from the one this thread started on, but
I hope someone can help me. I really would like to switch completely
from Windows to Ubuntu, but I can't if I can't sync my Centro.

Re: [Bug 334446] Re: Remove gnome-pilot from Ubuntu

2009-03-05 Thread Warner White
I'm not a high level exec and I have been using a PDA for years. Anybody
who does volunteer work, or sings in a chorus, or has family events can
find it handy. My shift from Windows to Ubuntu has been greatly hampered
by not finding a sync program that works. I use the Centro, which is
equivalent to the Z22. I am waiting impatiently for someone to figure
out how we can actually sync. In the meantime I have to keep using
Outlook and Chapura on a Vista laptop. I've seen lots of claims for
doing a sync, but not one of them has worked for me. So I'd like the bug
work to continue, and I suspect there are a lot of people out there who
would be disappointed in linux if no attempt is made to solve this
problem.

I'm just saying that it's not necessary software for normal desktop use. For
business use by high-level executives? Yes. Other than that...?

It's not like we're talking about taking it out of the repos. Just there's no
point to it being in the default install when PDAs aren't something the
average person needs & uses.

VPN software was just an example of something that *is* necessary (for anyone
that telecommutes, for many university students...) and cannot be acquired
from the repositories without a second already-set-up computer. If we prune
the unnecessary junk like this, the things that unblock repository access can
be included.

Oh, and I'm guessing sudoku is part of the gnome-games thing. Would be nice
if that package was split up. Some of those games, I wonder if anyone ever
plays.

Wait those are for claydoh and ubuntu-desktop's PPAs. Did you not update your
/etc/apt/sources.list for the new PPA line formats? Just comment those two
out for now, then go update them later.

Any chance some of you who own a PalmOS compatible device could test the
new 2.0.17 version in https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-desktop/+archive/ppa
? It is proposed for jaunty and should fix a couple of issues. I can't
test it myself, though, nobody in #ubuntu-desktop has a compatible
device.

For the record, I advocate removing it from the default installation as
well. It is essentially unmaintained in Ubuntu, because no developer has
a device to test it. Either someone who has volunteers to maintain it,
or we drop it to universe and from the default install in Karmic. They
get less and less popular anyway.
