[Bug 77612] Installer crashed

2007-01-03 Thread Ulf
Public bug reported:

We're sorry; the installer crashed. Please file a bug report at
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+filebug and a
developer will attend to the problem as soon as possible. To help the
developers understand what went wrong, include the following detail in
your bug report, and attach the files /var/log/installer/syslog,
/var/log/syslog, and /var/log/partman:

raceback (most recent call last):

RuntimeError: Install failed with exit code 1; see /var/log/installer/syslog
and /var/log/syslog

I do not know how to attach above files.
This happens when I tried to re-install Ubuntu. Second installation was
required since first one went wrong. Message "cannot find drive 4" (or similar)
appeared when I started the system after its first successfull installation.
Its running on one HDD attached to Giga-RAID (on-board) system and sharing it
with Windows XP.

[Bug 307924] Re: linux-image-2.6.27(-7)-virtual contains server kernel ...

2009-10-08 Thread Ulf
Hi,

the "surprise" in this case was that the system wasn't booting anymore
(as the kernel requires PAE now) which is more then a cosmetical issue
...

I'll check if I get VMTools compiled now ...

Best Regards

Ulf

[Bug 1439687] Re: Can not report bug: SSL Certificate Verify Failure

2017-11-27 Thread Ulf
For me the issue seems to be cause as the VMhost for this Ubuntu guest has
netskope / goskope.com installed and https traffic is inspected by way of a
wildcard certificate.
So yes, there is an issue with the cert, but it should be possible to manually
allow this operation to proceed anyway like all browsers do.

[Bug 1581164] [NEW] vmhgfs-fuse is mostly ignorant to upper and lower case filenames

2016-05-12 Thread Ulf
Public bug reported:

Hi,

vmhgfs-fuse doesnt seem to care much for upper and lower case usage in
filenames but represents the file just the way it likes.

to reproduce:

ls -l TEST test; touch test; ls -l test; ls -l TEST; touch TEST; ls -l
TEST; rm TEST; ls -l TEST; sleep 6; ls -l test TEST

ls: cannot access 'TEST': No such file or directory
ls: cannot access 'test': No such file or directory
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Mai 12 20:04 test
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Mai 12 20:04 TEST
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Mai 12 20:04 TEST
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Mai 12 20:04 TEST
ls: cannot access 'test': No such file or directory
ls: cannot access 'TEST': No such file or directory

which is:
- make sure none of the two files exists
- create lowercase file
- prove that lowercase got created: good
- prove that uppercase is still not their: FAIL (its there magically)
- create uppercase file
- prove uppercase file got created: good (kind of, the file was already there)
- remove uppdercase file
- prove that uppercase file was removed: FAIL (its still there)
- wait for things to settle
- prove that lowercase file wasnt harmed: FAIL (lowercase file gone)

Please investigate (this was working fine with vmhgfs kernel module).

Thanks

Ulf

[Bug 1581164] Re: vmhgfs-fuse is mostly ignorant to upper and lower case filenames

2016-05-12 Thread Ulf
may a more illustrative test is:

ls -l test TEST; touch test; ls -l test TEST; ls -l | grep -i test
ls: cannot access 'test': No such file or directory
ls: cannot access 'TEST': No such file or directory
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Mai 12 20:19 test
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Mai 12 20:19 TEST
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Mai 12 20:19 test

rm test

ls -l test TEST; touch TEST; ls -l test TEST; ls -l | grep -i test
ls: cannot access 'test': No such file or directory
ls: cannot access 'TEST': No such file or directory
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Mai 12 20:19 test
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Mai 12 20:19 TEST
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Mai 12 20:19 TEST

so the file gets created with the right upper and lowercase-ing but it
can be accessed and deleted either way (lower or upper case)

Hi,

I also want to upgrade from 14.10 to 15.04 and reproducibly run into this, and
upgrade aborts. Which logs / evidence do you need to address this?
(I can provide input on "needs-full-computer-model" -> virtualmachine ;-) )

[Bug 1504252] [NEW] upgrade from 14.10 to 15.04 fails: x11-utils_7.7+2build1_amd64.deb Hash Sum mismatch

2015-10-08 Thread Ulf
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I'm attempting to upgrade from 14.10 (with all updates) to 15.04.
Upgrade seems to progress normally but when what seems to be all update
packages have been loaded aborts with:

Failed to fetch
http://mirror.cov.ukservers.com/ubuntu/pool/main/x/x11-utils/x11-utils_7.7+2build1_amd64.deb
Hash Sum mismatch

Same has already been reported as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1468478 (at least
as far as I can tell) but for a different mirror, so it doesnt seem to
be an issue with the specific mirror. As I wasnt sure which logs and
further evidence would be need I reported this again.

Best Regards

Ulf

[Bug 1548789] [NEW] Ubuntu 15.10 VMWare guest won't show UI after upgrading to 4.2.0-30

2016-02-23 Thread Ulf
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1548587 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1548587

Public bug reported:

I've interrupted boot (by holding the Shift key whilst powering on the
VM) to bring up the Grub menu (it took several attempts to get it),
selected "Advanced options for Ubuntu", highlighted the previous kernel
("Ubuntu, with Linux 4.2.0-27-generic"), and booted.

Once the system came back up I logged in and did:

apt-get --purge remove linux-image-4.2.0-30-generic linux-image-
extra-4.2.0-30-generic

My VM(s) will now reboot.

Looks like the new kernel is broke.

I'm running VMware Workstation Pro 12.1.0 build-3272444 on Windows 7
64-bit and my VMs are using open-vm-tools.

[Bug 1165461] [NEW] pam_winbind offline logon does not work in 12.04

2013-04-06 Thread Ulf
Public bug reported:

The pam_winbind offline login does not work in 12.04 LTS with latest updates.
My configuration.
Client joined to domain with uidNumber set in AD.
smb.conf with winbind offline logon = yes
/etc/security/pam_winbind.conf with cached_login = yes
PAM configuration is the "default" pam-auth-update configuration with winbind.

If I am online everything works as expected. I can login with my AD account
tstusr2.
But if my notebook has no connection to the domain controller the offline login
does not work anymore.
The problem seems to be somehwere in PAM as PAM identifies the user as
"unkown". See attachment auth.log.

If I manually add my user to /etc/passwd the offline login works.
tstusr2:*:50001:70005::/home:/bin/bash

It can't be solution to add domain users to /etc/passwd. pam_winbind has
to deal with it.

nscd and SSSD are not installed / configured.

On other Linux distribution it works, so in my eyes something seems to
be wrong with Ubuntu and winbind.

[Bug 139424] Re: Some system tray icons are practically unvisible or badly sized in vertical xfce4-panel

2008-11-10 Thread Ulf Ochsenfahrt
According to the Bugreport over at xfce.org (
http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3233 ), the bug was fixed in
trunk around September 2007. I'm not closely following the xfce
development, so I'm afraid I can't help you there. For now I'm not
upgrading to 8.10, because of this and the xfce volume plugin bug.

I also encounter this bug, having just upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10. It
worked before, but now I can't add the volume control to the panel any
more. After clicking furiously for a while, it was added to the panel
once, but gone again after the next reboot.

[Bug 181374] Re: toshset required kernel toshiba support not enabled.

2008-11-14 Thread Ulf Ochsenfahrt
In 8.10, toshset (still?) does not work. Apparently (grep -i tosh
/boot/config-2.6.27-7-generic), the kernel toshiba support is not
enabled, so no toshiba or toshiba_acpi modules are there.

Running 8.10 on a Toshiba Portege R500 here.

Also, the package info for toshset is wrong. It says:

Toshset ia a command-line tool to allow access to much of the
Toshiba laptop hardware interface developed by Jonathan Buzzard. It can do
things like set the hard drive spin-down time, turn off the display
and set the fan speed without the help of the kernel.
The difference to toshutils is, that it does not need X or kernel-support.

It says that toshset does not need kernel-support, but it gives an error
message when run without kernel support. (Or maybe the package
description is correct, and something else is broken. But something is
broken in either case.)

[Bug 176844] Re: ntpdate fails to get a server from /etc/ntp.conf

2008-11-14 Thread Ulf Ochsenfahrt
This doesn't seem to be a valid bug:

1. The man-page for ntpdate says explicitly, that ntpdate requires a
server parameter, for example:

ntpdate ntp.ubuntu.com

2. The documentation in /etc/default/ntpdate.conf says explicitly, that
it is only used by ntpdate-debian.

3. If you use ntp, you shouldn't need to use ntpdate.

If you want to invoke ntpdate, you can simply call ntpdate-debian.

[Bug 62745] Re: [time-admin] "Synchronize Now" work only when ntp-server is installed

2008-11-14 Thread Ulf Ochsenfahrt
I'm on 8.04 and the 'synchronize now' button does nothing, with or
without ntp installed. On a 8.10 machine next to it, the 'synchronize
now' button does nothing, with or without ntp installed. I'm not sure if
it's the same bug as this, or even the same bug on both machines. I can
synchronize using ntpdate or ntpdate-debian (after hacking
/etc/default/ntpdate) on the terminal.

in fixing the bug, as requested earlier. I am however totally new to bug
reporting and Launchpad so the text I first wrote weren't included in my
previous comment, and only one attachment was added. Sorry about that.

I will try and upload a few more images (scanned in Kubuntu Hardy Heron
with Kooka 0.44) in various resolutions (75, 150, 300, 600 and 1200
dpi). Thanks.

[Bug 358573] Re: ecryptfs private directory randomly unmounts

2009-05-15 Thread Ulf Rompe
Seeing the same problem here, I just wrote a little script to analyze
how often the unmounting happens. It checks the Private dir every
minute, and if it appears to be unmounted, it spits out a message and
remounts it. The message is accompanied with a timestamp. If somebody
wants to try the script, just install moreutils, download the attached
monitor_private_dir.sh and run it in a shell.

Output on my machine, after starting the script yesterday at 07:58:

u...@joda:~> bin/monitor_private_dir.sh
Mai 14 07:58:08 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 14 08:40:08 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 14 09:40:08 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 14 10:00:08 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 14 12:20:09 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 14 13:00:09 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 14 13:30:09 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 14 14:00:09 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 14 15:00:09 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 14 18:00:09 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 14 20:30:10 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 14 21:00:10 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 14 22:00:10 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 14 23:30:10 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 15 00:40:10 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 15 01:00:10 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 15 01:30:10 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 15 03:00:11 ~/Private was unmounted.

So, the unmount seems to take place at nearly random times, except that
it only happens on full tens of minutes. This gives the impression that
it could be cronjob related. I will do some more investigation in this
direction. Maybe in the meantime somebody else who is affected by this
bug wants to run the script to see if he gets equivalent results?

[Bug 358573] Re: ecryptfs private directory randomly unmounts

2009-05-15 Thread Ulf Rompe
I'm encrypting ~/Private only. There are tons of cronjobs running on
this machine, several of them as my user. The unmount takes place every
now and then, but not with every run of a job. Maybe I have to run more
than one job at once for this to happen? But then again, I think Cron
serializes jobs in order to not start everything at once.

Looking at the similarities of the times of unmounting in the syslog, I
can spot these cronjobs to be running every time it happens:

rss2email as my user - should be harmless
fetch-exchange.py as my user - fetches mail from an exchange server and feeds
it to procmail
/usr/sbin/update-motd as root

To my knowledge, none of these jobs should be accessing ~/Private in any
way. Plus most times they are running my ~/Private stays mounted.

I'm still trying to gain some enlighenment by studying the logs. In
addition I will now adjust the start times of my jobs in the hope of
separating the jobs by time.

[Bug 358573] Re: ecryptfs private directory randomly unmounts

2009-05-19 Thread Ulf Rompe
I can now confirm that the unmounting only happens at times when two
cronjobs are run as my user. None of the jobs is supposed to do anything
in ~/Private. The bug doesn't happen every time, so this seems like a
race condition.

Jamie, I don't know if it matters, but the Private dir is also getting
unmounted when it is the cwd of several shells and I have files in there
opened with an editor.

I will now try to reproduce the bug with more simple cronjobs like "ls ~
>/dev/null".

[Bug 358573] Re: ecryptfs private directory randomly unmounts

2009-05-19 Thread Ulf Rompe
That worked out well. I have added these jobs to my crontab:

*/1 * * * * /bin/ls >/dev/null
*/2 * * * * /bin/ls >/dev/null

Therefore every two minutes both jobs are run, while every other minute only
one of them gets started.
Output from monitor_private_dir.sh since then:

Mai 19 11:44:27 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 19 12:28:27 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 19 12:32:27 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 19 12:33:27 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 19 12:36:27 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 19 12:42:27 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 19 12:46:27 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 19 12:52:27 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 19 12:54:27 ~/Private was unmounted.
Mai 19 13:00:27 ~/Private was unmounted.

At 12:33 another regular cronjob was running, so that uneven hit doesn't
count. Every other hit proves the theory that two arbitrary cronjobs
have to have the same start time to raise the chances of provoking the
unmount of ~/Private.

Are you able reproduce the bug with this test case (adding the two lines

I, too, get a 1x1 pixel nm-applet on every boot. This bug has been
sitting here for over a year, it's fixed in upstream, but not in Ubuntu
itself. I am very disappointed.

[Bug 313499] [NEW] e16 popups wrongly displayed in Ubuntu jaunty (dev)

2009-01-03 Thread Ulf Rehmann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: e16

1. Release:
Description:Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release:9.04

2. Package:
e160.16.8.14-1the Enlightenment Window Manager DR16

3. Expected behaviour:
If the cursor is on an activated Eterm or xterm window, no background
popup menu for mouse actions should occur.

4. Instead:
e16 background popup menus are displayed spontaneously
in Eterm windows and in xterm windows as it usually does only
 on the e16 desktop background.
This happens in Eterm and xterm windows, but not
in others like firefox windows or emacs windows.

This occurs under Ubuntu jaunty only and
(to my best knowledge) not in any earlier Ubuntu version.

[Bug 56965] Re: [Edgy] Consistent segfault when starting wine

2006-08-22 Thread Ulf Karlsson
The problem seems to be that the %gs register that holds the thread
local stack is not setup correctly since the normal _start function is
not use in wine-preloader. The stack protector uses the %gs register and
the stack protector is enabled by -fstack-protector.

If you compile the wine-preloader with -fno-stack-protector it will thus
not cause segmentation fault.

The stack-protector is turned on by default in the ubuntu gcc. Look at
the patch in gcc-4.1-4.1.1/debian/patches/gcc-ssp-default.dpatch. I
doubt the upstream wine would compile compile with vanilla gcc with the
stack-protector turned on.

[Bug 127374] Re: streaming icecast server and ogg vorbis - only 1 first entry in the playlist played

2007-10-24 Thread Ulf Abrahamsson
I can confirm that this bug is present in both totem-gstreamer and
rhytmbox in Feisty. For any web radio stream in OGG Vorbis format, they
will only play the current song. When the stream switches to a new song,
the client will appear to continue downloading - but there is not any
sound output.

As both totem and rhythmbox has this problem, I suspect that this a bug
in the gstreamer OGG support, so i marked this bug as "affects
gstreamer0.10". VLC is NOT affected.

Some of the streams i tried to play are:

[Bug 185634] Re: iSight doesn't work in Hardy Kernels

2008-02-16 Thread Ulf Karlsson
I have the same problem with the isight and uvcvideo.

Are we supposed to extract the firmware with the isight-firmware-tools?
This package can be obtained at

http://bersace03.free.fr/ift/

There is also an Ubuntu package by Etienne Bersace at

http://ppa.launchpad.net/bersace/ubuntu/pool/main/i/isight-firmware-
tools/isight-firmware-tools_1.0.2-0ubuntu0~ppa1_i386.deb

The package seems to be pretty recently updated, so I assume that there
is some use for it?

The driver appears however to be looking explicitly for the file
AppleUSBVideoSupport and not isight.fw that the isight-firmware-tools
extracts.

The situation is not entirely clear to me..

[Bug 185634] Re: iSight doesn't work in Hardy Kernels

2008-02-16 Thread Ulf Karlsson
OK, never mind the error I got in my last comment, it was not fatal -
the isight does work!

I think these are the steps:

Install isight-firmware-tools from:

http://ppa.launchpad.net/bersace/ubuntu/pool/main/i/isight-firmware-
tools/isight-firmware-tools_1.0.2-0ubuntu0~ppa1_i386.deb

Then extract the firmware with ift-extract, and add an entry for usbfs
to /etc/fstab (or mount it directly):

sudo addgroup --system usbfs
cat /etc/group | grep usbfs | sed -e 's/.*:.*:\([0-9]*\):.*/\1/' | \
xargs -iUSBFS_ID echo none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=USBFS_ID,devmode=664 0 0
| sudo tee -a /etc/fstab

Now reboot and the firmware should be loaded by udev automatically.

If you do modprobe uvcvideo, the firmware is already loaded and it will
not fail.

I suggest that the firmware loading is removed from linux-ubuntu-
modules-2.6.24, as they are in the upstream uvcvideo. The firmware
loading inside uvcvideo does not work.

Can anyone confirm this?

[Bug 62430] Re: rhythmbox doesn't do anything with .pls given on the command line

2008-02-16 Thread Ulf Abrahamsson
1. Rhythmbox does not really do anything with a local .pls file.
2. Opening the the .pls file in Totem opens and plays the file.

Possible solutions:
A. Add local .pls file support in Rhythmbox (requires a patch that adds
functionality)
B. Associate the .pls file with Totem by default. (simple and logical, a good
work around until Rhythmbox works as intended)
C. Make firefox pass the URLs to the mozilla-totem plugin.

Go with option B.

2008-02-16 Thread Ulf Karlsson
Yes, I read the howto but I could not get it to work even after removing
the ubuntu drivers.

There was a problem with ift-load on ubuntu since usbfs wasn't mounted.

Once I had mounted usbfs with

$ sudo mount -t usbfs /dev/bus/usb /proc/bus/usb/

I could run ift-load (after checking the bus/device id with lspci):

$ sudo ./ift-load -f /lib/firmware/isight.fw -b 005 -d 006
ift-load: Firmware loaded succesfully to 005:006

Ah, I'm sorry. The problem is that mutt up to 1.5.15 did _not_ support
SMTP, and thus needed a local MTA to send eMails. I hope this will be
resolved when the next stable release of mutt comes out.

[Bug 135912] Sort order for memory fields in process list is inverted

2007-08-30 Thread Ulf Rompe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

Klicking on a memory field header should disply the process list sorted
by this field in descending order. While the arrow indicates exactly
this, the actual sort order is ascending. Klicking once more inverts the
situation, the arrow indicates ascending order while in fact the list is
shown in a descending manner.

This happens on all memory related fields. It didn't happen in Feisty.

[Bug 162445] dvips searches current directory for eps files instead of target

2007-11-13 Thread Ulf Ochsenfahrt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: texlive-base-bin

When dvips is invoked, it looks in the current directory for eps files
instead of the directory which contains the dvi file. This means that
dvips cannot be used to compile dvi files which are in a different than
the current directory.

Steps to reproduce:
1. create a test.tex file:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{epsfig}
\begin{document}
\epsfig{file=test.eps,height=2cm}
\end{document}

2. create a test.eps file:
touch test.eps

3. compile the latex file
(if the eps is empty, the compile fails, just press 'q' to exit)

4. go to a different directory
cd ..

5. convert dvi file to ps
dvips directory/test.dvi

6. observe the error message
dvips: Could not find figure file test.eps; continuing.

[Bug 179056] vdr-plugin-remote recognises the wrong input device

2007-12-28 Thread Ulf Michaelis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vdr-plugin-remote

vdr-plugin-remote-0.3.9 (and earlier) for vdr 1.4.7

using the parameter "-i autodetect" the plugin scans all input-devices
using two different search strings.

First it looks for "DVB on-card IR receiver", then for a single "dvb" or
"DVB".

Unfortunately it scans the list of devices only once, looking for both
pattern. So, if the second pattern matches first, the device with the
correct pattern isn't scanned anymore with the resulkt of using the
wrong input device.

This can be checked using /proc/bus/input/devices.

[Bug 162445] Re: dvips searches current directory for eps files instead of target

2007-11-15 Thread Ulf Ochsenfahrt
latex also searches the target directory for eps files, if a target
directory is given with --output-directory. xdvi also searches the
target directory for eps files. dvips doesn't and is therefore
inconsistent with the other tools.

Of course, the dvi file doesn't contain directory information, but the
names in the dvi file should be taken relative to the dvi file
directory, as other tools do.

I can confirm. I just did an upgrade and it segfaults when to upgrade and sudo
core dumps. The system after upgrade is corrupt and when I rebooted I can not
log in because of segfault in the login.
I can not use Ctrl+Alt+F1 and login - segfault directly before I even type my
password.
If I boot with recovery and drop to root - it just hangs... and freezes.

So, I'm locked out :-)
My system config is Dell C521 AMD64 with Intel video.

For instance my debdiff above solves the startup issue on both my

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 57875 ***

I think the problem is that there are packages in Ubuntu universe that
don't have MOTU maintainers who are responsible for them. If the MOTU
developers are not willing to assert that a package fulfills certain
quality requirements, it should be removed from the repositories. And
that immediately!

There are obviously too many packages to handle for the too few MOTUs.

I know that this isn't the place for this discussion, sorry.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 57875 ***

OK, I agree. After reading the other bug reports in 57875 more closely
I also came to the conclusion that I was having some other problem
than the one originally reported in 57875. If you believe that my
problem (and patch) correspond to 68020, then that is probably
correct, and it should be posted there. It started the first time, but
then suddenly it began to fail at startup. I haven't traced the "real"
cause of the problem, I just removed patches one by one till azureus
started again.

So yes, can you please fix this mess per your suggestions? :)

Thanks!

[Bug 105481] Re: [needs-packaging] kqemu

2007-04-22 Thread Ulf Abrahamsson
When this package is availible in the repositories, the process of
running another OS in Ubuntu is as easy as enabling "QEMU launcher" in
"Add/remove programs". That would be a one-click virtualization solution
that "just works".

Re: [Bug 37528] no "ext3" or "minix" message related but ...

2007-04-14 Thread Ulf Karlsson
Has the fix for this still not been integrated into Dapper? Incredible.

This bug is rather critical IMHO.
