[Bug 377937] [NEW] SiI3726 port multiplier breaks under Karmic

2009-05-18 Thread Twigathy
Public bug reported:

I have a SATA port multiplier, Sil3726 based which works fine in Jaunty
(LiveCD) but breaks under Karmic.

The multiplier seems to be recognised, but then when the drives get
detected they appear to cycle between 1.5GBit and 3GBit link speed
infinitely and the boot never completes. This leads to a useless system
with the port multiplier attached

In Jaunty boot completes successfully and I can see (and use) the disks
just fine.

I'm not at all sure where the fault is here - it happens pretty early on
in boot so I'm going to assume kernel.

I'm using a 2.6.30 flavour kernel in Karmic and a 2.6.28 one in Jaunty.

One further note, I'm using root over NFS... but this should not make
any difference!

[Bug 398038] [NEW] update manager updates list greyed out karmic

2009-07-10 Thread Twigathy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

In ubuntu 9.10 my copy of update-manager seems to have broken.

Upon launching it I can check for updates okay but once the list of
updates is populated the cursor stays in its 'busy' state (The little
watch icon) and the updates are greyed out and unclickable. Note that
this is *not* the same flavour of grey as held back/uninstallable
updates!

I can still click on all four buttons (settings, close, check and
install updates) and they all perform the correct actions. If I close
and re-open update-manager the list of updates becomes un-greyed out and
I can view changes/descriptions of packages as normal.

It's quite hard to know where to start debugging this - yell if you need
the output from any commands or logfiles. I've attached a screenshot of
the problem.

This is a potential security/stability risk as I, as a user, can't see
what changes are in the new packages being installed...

[Bug 408439] [NEW] pulseaudio and workrave don't get along

2009-08-03 Thread Twigathy
Public bug reported:

While running workrave and pulseaudio, whenever workrave plays a sound
it creates a new playback stream in pulseaudio which does *not* go away.
In padevchooser's volume controller fiddler I can see a huge list of

restarted, and my logs rapidly fill with messages:

[Bug 415632] [NEW] evince fails to open all PDF - grey screen

2009-08-18 Thread Twigathy
Public bug reported:

All PDFs I try and load with evince end with evince showing me a
wonderful grey screen with no content, and the window controls as usual
(Max/min/close). PDFs open just fine with xpdf. This was working until
about a week ago

Upon launching from terminal, I get this:
** (evince:7414): WARNING **: Failed to create dbus proxy for
org.gnome.SettingsDaemon: Could not get owner of name
'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon': no such name

** (evince:7414): WARNING **: Failed to create file
'/home/twigathy/.gnome2/evince/evince-crashed.HMQ0YU': No such file or
directory

I don't know if these two warnings are related to the app failure.

I tried removing .gnome2/ and that didn't help either.

Version is GNOME Document Viewer 2.27.90 / 2.27.90-0ubuntu5 in Karmic.

Running it through strace seems to end up in an infinite loop of these:
poll([{fd=4, events=POLLIN}, {fd=6, events=POLLIN}, {fd=7, events=POLLIN},
{fd=8, events=POLLIN}, {fd=9, events=POLLIN}, {fd=12, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI},

[Bug 208551] Re: mdadm, Raid5 and XFS stuck in uninterruptable sleep

2008-05-06 Thread Twigathy
I'm not certain if I'm having the same trouble as you, but mdadm fell
over pretty hard for me on 2.6.24-16-server, mdadm - v2.6.3 - 20th
August 2007 when expanding 5x500GB -> 6x500GB. I lost all the data on
the raid (oops).

Possibly this is a bug in sata_sil with lots of disk writes? 5 of the 6
disks were on siI 3512 based SATA cards (The other was an onboard mobo
SATA port). Similarly, I can write to the disks individually fine, they
check out okay with badblocks and smartctl.

Did you get any weirdness in dmesg? I had a couple of odd things about
the SATA link going down... so possibly unrelated.

[Bug 221613] [NEW] NFSroot broken on hardy

2008-04-24 Thread Twigathy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

NFS root seems to be broken on Hardy Heron.

I installed a copy of Hardy using the mini.iso to a local disk and tried
to get NFS root working using (my own instructions...) here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/OnNFSDriveWithLocalBoot.
Everything seems to go well up until the boot process hits "eth0: link
up" and then I get nothing. No errors or anything, just sat there doing
nothing.

Verified there is no network activity between client and server with
iftop...

Tracked it down to a bug in initramfs-tools - see Debian bug# 395145.
Would be nice if some kind of fix was done - I am having a go at getting
it working now and if I make progress will post here again.

[Bug 221613] Re: NFSroot broken on hardy

2008-04-24 Thread Twigathy
Okay, poked at the problem a bit. It looks like getting an IP using dhcp
(or bootp, etc) is broken. The debian bug page (original link broken
- sorry. It links to ubuntu bug) suggests this is fixed - maybe - in a
newer version of initramfs-tools.

Specifying IP / netmask / ??? in grub's menu.lst make it work fine so the bug
is somewhere in the file:
/usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/nfs
...or possibly in the "ipconfig" command which is called when the script is
called using dhcp and other automagic IP address tools.

[Bug 120483] Re: nfsboot ubuntu desktop fails with errors creating /dev/null

Hi,

Yeah, turns out this was actually because of Network Manager taking down
and bringing up again eth0. That "bug" is still present.

My feisty (NFS root) install has both these files contents as "exit" to stop
network mangager mangling the network connection:
/etc/default/NetworkManager

[Bug 120483] nfsboot ubuntu desktop fails with errors creating /dev/null

2007-06-14 Thread Twigathy
Public bug reported:

I installed Ubuntu Fesity desktop with the aim of creating an nfsboot
system, the files being stored on a server on the LAN. The client
machine (mostly) comes up, I do get a login prompt for a very short
period of time before more services decide to load and then the error
regarding /dev/null appears.

I checked on the server side, /dev/null does exist in the client image
and seems to have the correct permissions.

I do not really know if this is a bug or an error with my config; I'm
fairly confident my setup is correct...

Stuff done:
(On the client)
Created /mnt/edam
Mounted 192.168.0.15:/mnt/storage/NFS -> /mnt/edam
cp -ax /. /mnt/edam/. (Created the NFS boot image)

[edit boot image on 192.168.0.15]
Edited fstab - remove entry for /
- Add entries for proc and sys

Edited /etc/network/interfaces
- Removed all entries except loopback

[add entry to /boot on the VM]
cd /etc/initramfstools
vim initramfs.conf (Change from "local" to "nfs")
update-initramfs
vim initramfs.conf (Change back to "local")
mv new.initramfs to newramfs-NFS
mv new.initramfs.bak to newramfs
add entry to grub.lst

[Try it and see :o]
 - still problems with /dev/ (Can't create /dev/null(!))
- Errors after the /dev/null one:
/etc/init.d/rc: 2: sed: Input/output error. (Repeated for a few screens).

Hacked up "/etc/init.d/{avahi-daemon, dbus} with "exit 0" at the top of both
files to get them to go away and stop mucking around with the network card when
it already has an IP.
TestingFails. New errors!

Seems to fail almost immediately after "Starting basic networking..."
Ends up with basically file not found errors and then I/O errors. Which
suggests "Starting basic networking" is hosing eth0 on boot.

I can't work out which service is responsible for this message though.
Must be somewhere in /etc/init.d/ :-)

Seem to be getting a tiny bit closer...

remove to stop this happening and make evince work again?

I use the in-kernel NFS root support and $HOME is just another directory
inside of that. My fstab does not have an entry for / or /home. I'm not
sure about autofs, but / never gets unmounted or remounted (Lazily or
otherwise) as far as I know...

[Bug 432574] [NEW] Karmic NFS root broken by udev / upstart upgrade

2009-09-18 Thread Twigathy
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 430348 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/430348

Public bug reported:

Upon upgrading my Karmic NFS root install today it now fails to boot.
Just before boot hangs, I get this in the log onscreen:
inotify_add_watch failed: bad address.

The ifupdown set of scripts might also be to blame here. I really don't
know. It's hard to debug this when I've very little information to relay
back to you lot!

 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 430348] Re: NFS root device never ready

2009-09-18 Thread Twigathy
I too have this problem. although in a slightly different form. I have
/boot on a CompactFlash and root on an NFS server.

The entry in grub reads as follows:
title Ubuntu 9.10 kernel 2.6.31-6-generic NETBOOT
root(hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.31-6-generic root=/dev/nfs
nfsroot=192.168.0.30:/mnt/monkey/corona/ ip=dhcp
initrd /initrd.img-2.6.31-6-generic

Boot hangs somewhere very very early, just after init-bottom, although
it's hard to see precisely where. Stops after a pile of complaints from
udev (inotify_add_watch failed: bad address).
