[Bug 259631] Re: Cannot open Private directory after a reboot when "Automatic Login" enabled
The fix doesn't seem to work for me, i.e. I can't mount when I login from SSH using public key auth. Also, I followed the instructions posted above to create the symlinks in my unmounted Private directory, but the files those symlinks should point to aren't there on my system. For reference: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Private$ apt-cache policy ecryptfs-utils ecryptfs-utils: Installed: 53-1ubuntu12 Candidate: 53-1ubuntu12 Version table: *** 53-1ubuntu12 0 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Private$ ls -l /usr/share/ecryptfs-utils/ ls: cannot access /usr/share/ecryptfs-utils/: No such file or directory (I just upgraded to Jaunty, but had already tested SSH access on Intrepid, with intrepid-proposed enabled and all upgrades applied). -- Cannot open Private directory after a reboot when "Automatic Login" enabled https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/259631 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 321988] [NEW] Microsoft Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 2.10 Keyboard: multimedia keys and other extended keys not working
Public bug reported: I use a "Microsoft Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop" wireless keyboard + mouse combo. The keyboard has several multimedia and extended keys (Documents, Images, Music, Mute, Play/Pause, Stop, Volume Up, Volume Down, Rewind, Fast Forward, Multimedia, E-Mail, Web, Messenger, Calculator, Logout, Stand-by). Most of those keys have an action assigned via System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts, yet none of the keys actually do anything when pressed (prior to fix of bug #311254, they used to crash X when pressed). I followed the steps outlined in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting and found that: - xev reveals no keypress events - input-events reveals no input events - acpi_listen reveals no ACPI event. I'm therefore filing this against the kernel as per the wiki page above. I'm attaching the required information. Please, let me know if there is any other information I can provide. [Bug 335147] [NEW] Initial collection indexing uses too much CPU
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: banshee I just installed Banshee so I had to do a full indexing of my collection. The process lasted for about 6 minutes and something, during which CPU stayed mostly above 100%, and it went as high as (approximately) 156%. CPU temperature went as high as 70.9C, which is not within safe operation bounds for my CPU (a Pentium D 2.80 GHz processor). I don't have the Mirage plugin installed, and I have the "Disable features requiring Internet access" preference ticked, so it didn't download cover art for albums (from previous experience, downloading cover art drives CPU usage, and core temperature, even higher). @Dustin: Thanks a lot. I subscribed to Bug#277706 and agree to this bug being resolved invalid. As for your .ssh scheme, it's interesting indeed. Personally, I went the lazy way and just symlinked everything but authorized_keys, but never felt satisfied about that. [Bug 255624] [NEW] Cannot mount the encrypted private directory after changing password
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ecryptfs-utils Observed with ecryptfs-utils 53-1ubuntu1 on Intrepid alpha, but guess the following is by design. Steps to reproduce: 1) Create an encrypted private directory as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EncryptedPrivateDirectory (see Testing) 2) Logout and login again to confirm that the encrypted private directory is mounting 3) Change your unix password 4) Logout and login again to observe that the encrypted directory is no longer mounted 5) Also open a terminal and try to manually mount it with the command ecryptfs-mount-private and see it fail with message "keyctl_search: Required key not available" What should happen: After changing one's password, the user is still able to access their encrypted private directory. What happens instead: After changing one's password, the user can no longer mount their encrypted private directory. Comment: >From what I understand, ecryptfs-tools needs a password to encrypt the private >directory. This private password is wrapped (i.e. encrypted) with the user >login password at initialization time. Subsequently, the private password is >unwrapped at each login using the login password just provided by the user. This breaks as soon as the user changes their unix password, because the login password is no longer able to unwrap the private password. Here, The Right Thing to do is to unwrap and rewrap the private password transparently as users change their login password, but I don't know how difficult that is. Transitorily, prominent instructions on the wiki on how to do update the private password manually or otherwise recover from the situation would be welcome. [Bug 315373] [NEW] nautilus segfaults on insertion or removal of removable media
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Observed under nautilus 1:2.25.2-0ubuntu4 (Ubuntu Jaunty). Inserting a removable medium of any kind, for example a CD or a USB key, or turning on an external USB disk causes nautilus to crash with a segfault. This is 100% reproducible. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ltspfs After the transition of udev rules from /etc/udev/rules.d to /lib/udev/rules.d, thin clients fail to boot with the following error message: udevd-event[2451]: mknod(/dev/pktcdvd/control, 020660, (10,62) failed: Not a directory I will now try to workaround this by manually copying the rules to /lib/udev/rules.d inside the chroot and updating everything. [Bug 317848] Re: Thin clients won't boot after udev rule transition
I tried to work around this issue with these steps: 1) copied the rules.d directory (and files within) from /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/udev to /opt/ltsp/i386/lib/udev 2) rebuilt the ltsp image 3) updated the ltsp kernels I performed the same steps for the amd64 chroot as I'm also testing with amd64 clients. The results are as follows: i386 clients display the usplash screen with the floating progress bar, then hang on a black screen without any message; the amd64 clients display the usplash sceen with the floating progress bar, then the normal progress bar, then hang with the message above. In short, the behaviour of amd64 clients is unchanged from what they did before the workaround, while the behaviour of i386 clients has worsened (previously they behaved exactly as accounted above for amd64 clients). -- Thin clients won't boot after udev rule transition https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/317848 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 318261] Re: ATI USB remote keypresses ignored
I have a Microsoft Natural Desktop (wireless keyboard+mouse on USB). I have the same issues described here, i.e. pressing multimedia and other extended buttons used to crash X before bug 311254 was fixed and are ignored altogether now. Because the patch for bug 311254 covers both master=0x0 and mk=0x0 (the latter was originally reported as bug 309785, and specifically related to extended keys in multimedia keyboards, but was later duped agains 311254), it may well be that the sources for the null values are separate and we have two different bugs here. [Bug 315373] Re: nautilus segfaults on insertion or removal of removable media
Yes, as soon as I instelled gvfs-dbgsym and libhal1-dbgsym the problem went away. I guess it is because a bunch of -dbg packages were automatically removed at the same time. I removed the nautilus-dbgsym, gvfs-dbgsym and libhal1-dbgsym packages that I installed to track this crash, and the problem stay fixed. I will try and reinstall the -dbg packages and see if it comes back, but I could use some guidance to do so. [Bug 268014] [NEW] No way to mount the encrypted private directory when logging in over ssh using public key auth
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ecryptfs-utils Observed with ecryptfs-untils 53-1ubuntu8. Steps to reproduce: 1) Set up your box so that you can login via ssh using public key authentication 2) Set up an encrypted private folder for yourself 3) Logout locally so that the encrypted private folder is unmounted 4) Login remotely using your ssh key What happens: The encrypted private directory is not mounted automatically and can't be mounted manually using ecryptfs-mount-private because the key has not been unwrapped. What should happen: I understand why the above happens, and I appreciate that the ideal solution (automount of the encrypted private folder in this case) may well not be feasible because of security considerations, but I think that ecryptfs-mount-private should really ask for your password instead of erroring out if the key for the private folder has not been unwrapped at login time for whatever reason. I wouldn't even mind if I have to write something like ecryptfs-mount-private --ask-password to have it happen, if that must be... ** Affects: ecryptfs-utils (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- No way to mount the encrypted private directory when logging in over ssh using public key auth https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/268014 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 209087] Re: [hardy] RTNETLINK answers: No such process
Confirming as I have the same issue. Steps to reproduce: 1. Click on the Network Manager applet 2. Click on Manual configuration... in the menu 3. Unlock 4. Double-click on wired network (in my case) 5. Uncheck Enable roaming mode, select Static IP address from the dropdown and enter some sensible data for IP address, subnet mask and Gateway address 6. Open a terminal window and do sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart Expected outcome: The configured interface took up the manual configuration and network is connected and working. Actual outcome: The error messages reported by the OR appear, the interface doesn't have a valid IP and network is not working. Probable cause and temporary workaround: This is a sample of the /etc/network/interfaces file as written by the configuration tool (after configuring eth0): auto lo iface lo inet loopback iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.2.101 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.2.1 Note the blank line above the eth0 stanza, where the line auto eth0 should appear. I found that manually editing the file to add the auto eth0 line and restarting networking once more fixes the problem. Once the problem is fixed, I've further found that you can use the configuration tool to switch back and forth between DHCP and Static IP Address, so long as you don't re-enable roaming mode. Doing so deletes the whole interface stanza, including the auto line, and the problem is back. As a sidenote, I've found that I can't configure the same interface through Network Tools. Any attempt (even with a restored configuration file) just brings up a dialog telling that the interface doesn't exist. -- [hardy] RTNETLINK answers: No such process https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/209087 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I also tested this under 2.6.34, using the 2.6.34-020634rc7-generic #020634rc7 package from the Kernel Team PPA. With this kernel, the ACPI error is gone, but the AC adapter is always detected as plugged even if unplugged. The battery related behavior is the same: that is, the battery is detected but the battery charge status cannot be read. I'm going to attach the full output of dmesg | grep ACPI under 2.6.34 as well. [Bug 578909] [NEW] acer_wmi blocks wlan rfkill status to disabled on Acer Aspire 4820TG
Public bug reported: NetworkManager always reports "Wireless is disabled", and the acer_wmi rfkill device in sysfs always reports state=0. Trying to write 1 to the rfkill device state doesn't produce errors, but it doesn't produce any results either, i.e. the state stays set at 0 and the wireless radio stays off. Removing the acer_wmi module removes the rfkill device, turning on the wireless radio. I also tested this with upstream kernel using the 2.6.34-020634rc7-generic package from the Kernel Team PPA, with the same results. [Bug 1159513] [NEW] Banshee freezes on copying to iPod music which needs transcoding
Public bug reported: After updating to raring, Banshee freezes each time I try to import to an iPod any music file which needs transcoding (i.e., FLAC and OGG). Importing music which doesn't need transcoding works, so the problem seems to be with the transcoding process itself and not with the iPod interaction. I am able to transcode the files manually with SoundConverter, though I usually need to start the process two or three times and I still get spurious error messages (typically, the message says the output file cannot be saved, although the output file IS correctly saved and it plays back just fine). This too is new since the upgrade. I do not know if the two problems are related and if they indicate a deeper problem in the GStreamer stack. Please let me know if there is any further testing that I can perform to help assess the problem. Please also let me know if you wish me to report separate bugs against SoundCoverter and/or GStreamer. [Bug 731786] Re: Upon first login, launcher gets in the way of maximized windows
I thought this one had been fixed. I'm no longer seeing this as of 3.6.8 (running 3.6.8-0ubuntu3 from the natty repositories right now). Please let me know if you need more information on my setup. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/731786 Title: Upon first login, launcher gets in the way of maximized windows -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 851864] [NEW] Unity shell crashes on login
Public bug reported: At login, Unity fails to start, leaving me with just the top panel, permanently showing the Desktop menus, and the Desktop itself, but no launcher, no dash, no indicators and no keyboard shortcuts. The Desktop itself works, for example I can create a folder, open it and then open a file from Nautilus. Applications launched this way seem to work correctly, but no window management function is available. If I run compiz --replace in a terminal from a Unity 2D session, I get this: Checking if settings need to be migrated ...no Checking if internal files need to be migrated ...no Backend : gconf Integration : true Profile : default Adding plugins Skipping upgrade com.canonical.unity.unity.01.upgrade Skipping upgrade com.canonical.unity.unity.02.upgrade Initializing core options...done GConf Error: Configuration server couldn't be contacted: D-BUS error: Connection is closed GConf Error: Configuration server couldn't be contacted: D-BUS error: Connection is closed GConf Error: Configuration server couldn't be contacted: D-BUS error: Connection is closed GConf Error: Configuration server couldn't be contacted: D-BUS error: Connection is closed GConf Error: Configuration server couldn't be contacted: D-BUS error: Connection is closed (compiz:546): Gdk-WARNING **: The application 'compiz' lost its connection to the display :0; most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed the application. I cannot run unity --reset because of bug #778470 This seems to be related to the latest unity or compiz update, as it happened on the first login after the update.
