[Bug 160954] Automatic resizing of NTFS fails in installer

2007-11-08 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

When selecting the first choice of 7.10 live cd installer's partitioner
("Resize and use freed space"), the resize fails after contemplating the
choice for ten minutes. Old partition was a NTFS on a sata drive.

[Bug 160952] Installation partitioning stuck with unused partition

2007-11-08 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

When installing from the 7.10 live cd, the partitioning gets stuck when
manually creating a new partitioning table and selecting the first
partition as unused (for installing Windows later) as the first
partition. Can be worked around by closing the installer window,
restarting the installer and formatting the first partition as fat32.

The original partition table had just one NTFS partition, if that
affects the bug.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I couldn't convince the owner of
the laptop to redo the installation at such a busy time (end of
semester), but I'll (my inbox will) remember what extra information is
needed in case the same thing happens (possibly when upgrading to
hardy later).

[Bug 209549] [NEW] ipython sh profile not working

2008-03-30 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ipython

The shell profile in ipython is not working properly. Using apt-cache or
apt-get fails with different errors, presumably because ipython
interprets the dash in the middle of the command as a minus operator.

To reproduce:

~$ ipython -p sh

Exclamation marks are only for the default profile, this bug is about
the sh-profile. This is not an upsteam problem, afaik. Even the ipython
manual mentions the use of apt-get with tab-completing package names.
See example from Debian sid, with default settings of ipython:

[Bug 585278] [NEW] g-p-m runs for every user and gdm, eating memory

2010-05-25 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

While running multiple times wouldn't be a problem normally, each
instance eats roughly 250 megabytes of memory. For a small family of
users, this means that even a new machine with 4GB ram will eventually
start struggling on tasks it shouldn't. Either one instance of g-p-m
should be enough, or the memory footprint should be a lot smaller.

[Bug 463486] [NEW] Audio crackles with some software

2009-10-29 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Problem affects multiple software: at least wine, mpg123, mpg321 and
vlc. With the mpgs I get a lot of "ALSA: underrun, at least 0ms." and in
the application tab of gnome-volume-control, the application (ALSA plug-
in) rapidly flashes on and off. With the same file vlc gives
"[0x1c518c8] alsa audio output error: cannot write: Broken pipe" and
either refuses to play anything or crackles even worse. However with
mplayer the file plays just fine, even with -ao alsa (volume-control
confirms that it is using ALSA plug-in).

This worked yesterday just fine (running Karmic RC then, and I suppose
release now).

Doesn't seem like it. Exact same symptoms: 'start gdm' reports a pid,
but gdm does not come up. syslog shows that it tried to spawn too many

It seems like this is still related to booting into recovery mode and
then continuing the boot.

[Bug 454577] [NEW] DKMS privilege de-escalation breaks compilation

2009-10-18 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dkms

At least in the case of linux-headers-2.6.31-14-generic and nvidia-185
-kernel-source module compilation ends with error "Unable to determine
the target kernel version". This seems to happen because files under
/lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic/build/include/linux/ (which are actually
under /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.31-14-generic/include/linux) are only
readable by root, and dkms is running the make as nobody.

Running chmod -R a+rX on the headers folder is an easy workaround, but
finding what's happening based on the original error message is somewhat
tedious.

[Bug 454603] [NEW] Removing a default kernel can leave system unbootable

2009-10-18 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen

Binary package hint: startupmanager

Changing from server kernel to generic kernel left the system
unbootable: without knowing how to access the boot menu, grub just
complained about not finding a file (system boots fine by pressing shift
and selecting a kernel from the menu).

It seems that removing the server kernel (which had been the default
before) left memtest as the default choice, and for some reason it
couldn't boot.

[Bug 454989] [NEW] Forced fsck in boot cannot be bypassed

2009-10-18 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

A forced fsck (for mount count) cannot be bypassed in anyway. Also it
shows no progress, which means that system seems unresponsive for a long
time (for large hard drives). Also it takes time for the splash image to
disappear and the message announcing the check to appear, not that the
message really explains anything for a layman. Before that the
unresponsiveness seems even worse. Contrast to normally quite snappy
boot and I think the user would be justified in trying a hard reboot to
solve the "boot problem".

[Bug 995636] [NEW] Space, arrows and j/k stop working randomly

2012-05-06 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

Sometimes all the other key commands to scroll a document apart from pg.
up/down stop working. Mouse wheel still works. This is unrelated to the
fullscreen bug, as entering fullscreen is not needed to trigger this,
and entering/exiting fs doesn't return the functionality. Nor does

Hints appreciated how to debug this better, since there are no obvious
steps to reproduce this.

[Bug 998998] [NEW] Tor-button messes up Firefox 12 functionality

2012-05-13 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen

when hovering with mouse, and reordering tabs with mouse. No idea why,
or if other things are affected too, but disabling tor-button fixed

[Bug 811281] Re: ath9k driver randomly disconnects and can only reconnect by reloading the module

2012-07-23 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Based on Laurent's comment, this bug does still appear in current
versions of Ubuntu, which is what was asked from me in March. I couldn't
answer that, because I thought nothing will ever happen, and switched
away from Ubuntu on my laptop last winter. I also won't be installing
Ubuntu just to confirm this bug on new releases.

Laurent, I guess you just have to file a new bug, as stupid as that
feels. Just like I did after #461769 was closed.

[Bug 894693] [NEW] Suggested package "firmware-linux" does not exist

2011-11-25 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

xserver-xorg-video-radeon suggests to install firmware-linux, which does
not exist. Bug #565482 was marked not fix, because the suggestion
already exists in Debian. However this is not a bug in there, since that
package does indeed exist in Debian, but not in Ubuntu. The correct
package in ubuntu is linux-firmware, which combines the debian packages
firmware-linux-free and firmware-linux-nonfree (firmware-linux is a
metapackage that pulls in both of the real packages). linux-firmware is
crucial because without the radeon microcodes, using the radeon driver
would be impossible (see
http://wiki.x.org/wiki/radeonBuildHowTo#Missing_firmware).

The problem hasn't manifested because many people have linux-firmware
already installed due to other dependencies. However I do not believe
that is a proper reason to leave the dependencies of this package broken
in purpose, especially when this is trivial to fix. For example people
running their own custom kernels wouldn't have the firmware package
pulled in at all (and please don't go and say that only power users do
that and power users don't matter).

[Bug 1076288] [NEW] Radeon driver starts freezing and dies

2012-11-08 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

Problem began playing a dvd with xbmc on dual screen setup. Everything
was fine, until I moved the mouse trying to get to the playback
controls. Then picture froze and after every few seconds the screens
blinked off and back again, with some temporary graphical glitches. This
persisted until I kill -9:ed xbmc, after which things seemed to
normalize. Trying to open a new window caused the same blink again, but
very slowly the terminal appeared. When the glitches didn't go away, I
tried restarting lightdm, but it only managed to stop, not start again.
However the console was still working.

After a while, "start lightdm" did work again.

[Bug 670028] Re: cplay stops playing when !shell is used

2011-03-03 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
There shouldn't be a version that stops playing when shell is used. The
version 1.49 does have a bug that crashes the cplay when !shell is used,
but this is fixed now. Note that if you have a long running external
command, then cplay won't progress to the next track if it's still
waiting for the shell to finish.

Assuming this report is about the crash using shell. If the long running
command is the problem for you, please reopen. But note that the shell
isn't meant for such use and it will be given quite a low priority.

[Bug 576744] Re: Unable to modify brightness when the screen is locked

2011-04-02 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
I'm not what is required to raise the importance of the bug, but this is
much more major usability problem than just "low". Given a non technical
user, the screen is just black without any hints on what the user can
do. This is equivalent to the system just plain crashing or freezing. A
more clever user might attempt to write the password blindly, and even
try pressing the caps lock if the first attempt doesn't work, but this
is just unacceptable.

It's even worse in natty, where the brightness goes to zero when
removing the power cable, even if all relevant settings are disabled in
power management GUI.

I have deleted (again) the unreadable files, but I think a week is
unreasonably short time to verify the fix, as this bug does not have a
certain way to reproduce. Also I don't see how it makes sense to remove
the fix AND close the bug without verification leaving it certainly not
fixed.

[Bug 509180] Re: ecryptfs sometimes seems to add trailing garbage to encrypted files

2011-09-01 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
I tried "cat /dev/zero > zerofile" since heavy writing / disk exhaustion
seemed to be related to the problem. And sure enough, after the empty
space went to zero, same errors appeared again to dmesg. After deleting
the zerofile I logged out and tried to login, but it failed. Then I
tried to shutdown cleanly, but it failed. After a hard reboot the disk
space had been freed, and the .Private contained again zero length
files. The perm trick reveals that zeroed files include gnome applet
files and other stuff that logically could have been written into
without user action. All of them are now completely unreadable due to
input/output errors.

I'd say that ecryptfs is still extremely dangerous to use due to data
corruption problems in a common scenario, writing too much. It simply
cannot be offered to users without any kind of warning that this
happens.

[Bug 509180] Re: ecryptfs sometimes seems to add trailing garbage to encrypted files

2011-09-07 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
I'm now getting the same errors in dmesg, in fact I'm not doing anything
and there's just more and more (seems like two errors every two
seconds). *But* there's no zero sized files under .Private so I no
longer can even remove them and cannot get rid of the erros even
temporarily...

[Bug 461632] Re: On Hibernate: btusb_bulk_complete: hci0 urb f2fdbe00 failed to resubmit (1)

2010-11-22 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Happens occasionally on MacBook when trying to hibernate, resulting in a
completely frozen system. Haven't been able to determine what exactly
causes it, at least it's not related to using bluetooth (as I don't have
any bt devices).

[Bug 740814] [NEW] opening a folder on HFS-volume crashed the kernel

2011-03-23 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hfsplus

Opening the volume in nautilus worked, but opening a subfolder crashed
the kernel. Images of the trace attached.

This hasn't happened ever in Maverick, and hasn't happened so far in
Natty (just checked that after booting I can open that folder).

[Bug 777733] [NEW] Quirk for 2-button mouse Logitech Marble Mouse (trackball)

2011-05-05 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev

Had to modify X11 configuration as per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks#2-button%20Mice, since this trackball
doesn't have more than two buttons and middle button emulation is
essential for copy&paste.

Couldn't find lsinput with apt, so cannot attach the output but will
attach dmidecode output.

[Bug 778943] [NEW] man directories not created with proper permissions

2011-05-07 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: man-db

My user has strict umask, so normally everything is created without any
permissions for group or others. Using sudo, some man directories seem
to be created root:root rwx-- while they should be rwx-r-x-r-x.
Installation assumes that the default permissions are "right" and does
not make sure the dirs are accessible (excerpt from apt):

Today removing and modprobing the driver wasn't enough, had also to
restart NetworkManager (the wireless applet in the panel just kept
saying "device not ready" until I did that).

The initscript now checks the defaults file, but the defaults file
itself should have at least a comment about this option. But I suppose
the actual problem is now fixed and released.

[Bug 509180] Re: ecryptfs sometimes seems to add trailing garbage to encrypted files

2011-04-12 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
While it doesn't seem to be the focus of this bug, the relevant bugs
have been marked as duplicates of this one.

I'm running 2.6.38-8 in Natty beta, and still getting a lot of

Apr 12 14:46:32 puppy-ubuntu kernel: [31106.234038] Valid eCryptfs headers not
found in file header region or xattr region
Apr 12 14:46:32 puppy-ubuntu kernel: [31106.234047] Either the lower file is
not in a valid eCryptfs format, or the key could not be retrieved. Plaintext
passthrough mode is not enabled; returning -EIO

so it would seem that either the patch hasn't fixed this, or #372014 is
not actually a duplicate.

[Bug 610142] [NEW] add-apt-repository does not re-enable repos disabled in upgrade

2010-07-26 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Enable a PPA repository with add-apt-repository
2. Upgrade Ubuntu (for example from Karmic to Lucid)
3. Notice that PPA packages are not available, run add-apt-repository again

What happens:

add-apt-repository does not uncomment the line in the relevant file
under /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

What should happen:

add-apt-repository recreates the relevant file enabling the repository,
or at least give a message telling that the repository is disabled and
that manual action is needed.
