[Bug 217729] Re: qt4 apps don't support subpixel rendering

2008-11-27 Thread The Fiddler
Thanks for the pointers, Moony. I'm rather particular about my fonts,
too, and this issue is the reason why I am not using KDE.

1) That's covered.

2) No, just the local.conf I attached to my previous post.

3) xrdb -query | grep -i xft
Xft.antialias: 1
Xft.dpi:96
Xft.hinting:1
Xft.hintstyle: hintslight
Xft.rgba: rgb

It doesn't specify an lcdfilter, but adding that doesn't seem to fix the
issue.

Does anyone know where QT is getting its settings from? QT3 seems to use
the specified settings, but QT4 seems stuck to full hinting, even with
the new packages.

[Bug 103306] Re: compiz eats mouse clicks at the border of the screen

2009-06-16 Thread The Fiddler
Since we can simply disable the ailing plugins, this is a paper cut
candidate. Consider that:

a) This bug represents one of the worst UI design violations (breaking
Fritt's law without any visual indication).

b) From the viewpoint of Compiz developers, this is not a bug (it's by
design).

c) The average user doesn't have a chance to fix or work around this
problem.

[Bug 103306] Re: compiz eats mouse clicks at the border of the screen

2009-06-18 Thread The Fiddler
After more testing, it seems that the top panel works correctly. On the
other hand, if you move the top panel out of the way (say, place it on
the left) and maximize a window, the top row of the screen will only
accept left clicks. Right- and middle-clicks are eaten and the scroll
wheel works as if it was over the desktop.

Confusing behavior, but probably not a paper cut (since it doesn't
appear in the default configuration).

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-06-23 Thread The Fiddler
Most "rookie" users I know, rename files by right clicking and selecting
'rename' (both on WIndows and on Ubuntu). More savvy ones press F2. The
click, wait, then click again pattern falls somewhere in between - I
personally find it annoying and avoid it (hence like Gnome), but others
swear by it.

Maybe a usability study would shed some light here. Adding more options
is somewhat like saying "we don't know, decide yourself", which clashes
somewhat with Gnome standards.

Re: [Bug 195737] Re: Set "open" animation to glide 2, not glide 1

2009-06-29 Thread The Fiddler
Personally, I prefer the glide 2 animation for windows. Fade feels like
a better fit for 'transitive' windows, like menus or dialogs. The glide
2 animation is a tweaked fade with slightly more impact - which
conceptually fits application windows (they have more impact than simple
menus).

The difference is subtle though and I don't feel strongly for it. I just
felt a strange vibe when I used the KDE compositor, which I eventually
linked to the fade-in animation: application windows behaved exactly
like menus!

[Bug 91786] Re: Compiz's Panel shadows show on top of other windows

2009-07-04 Thread The Fiddler
Why is this marked as invalid?

1. This affects the default configuration of Ubuntu.
2. It is exceedingly ugly.

"!name=gnome-panel" in "Window Decorations" options.

This looks like a prime candidate for a paper cut.

[Bug 218345] Re: fglrx 8.4 released today. Any chance for hardy?

2008-04-19 Thread The Fiddler
I've installed 8.4 without problems (X1950 Pro, x86_64). Compared to
8.3, it improves scrolling in Firefox and Opera significantly when using
Compiz. It also seems a little more stable under stress-testing
(creating and destroying 100 OpenGL contexts asynchronously would cause
the whole PC to lock up with 8.3. I haven't been able to reproduce the
problem with 8.4). No negative side effects observed until now, and no
new OpenGL extensions supported on 8.4.

For these reasons alone, fglrx 8.4 is a worthwhile update to Hardy.
Besides, the version number fits nicely with Ubuntu 8.04 ;-)

Keep in mind that we'll probably be stuck with these drivers for 6
months at least, so improved stability and performance are important
features.

2008-05-03 Thread The Fiddler
I can also reproduce this with OpenTK (quite incidentally, as it is
similar to JOGL but for .Net). Attached is a typical crash dump.

It started happening when I started using nested XOpen/XCloseDisplay

(versions 7.11-8.4), but not the latest Mesa3D or nvidia drivers.

[Bug 194919] Re: libopenal needs replacement

2008-02-29 Thread The Fiddler
I agree, OpenAL soft will officially replace the outdated and buggy
sample implementation. Unlike the SI, OpenAL soft actually conforms to
the OpenAL specs.

Some maintainer *please* look into that, it will be a shame to ship
Hardy with so obviously and horribly broken OpenAL support.

[Bug 187997] [NEW] alcMakeContextCurrent crashes

2008-02-01 Thread The Fiddler
Public bug reported:

Bug encountered on Ubuntu 7.04 and 7.10 and affects both x86 and x86_64
architectures.

This is a known bug of the outdated sample implementation: calling
alcMakeContextCurrent more than two times results in a crash. This issue
is descibed in detail at the OpenAL mailing list:
http://opensource.creative.com/pipermail/openal/2008-January/010881.html

Quote:

"It was caused by alcMakeContextCurrent trying to (re)set the output
parameters of the playback device to those defined in the given context.
However by the second time it's called on a context, the device is
playing. Under ALSA, this causes crashes.

IIRC the latest SVN version has this fixed. You might have better luck
with OpenAL-Soft though since I don't know of any plans for another SI
release."

This bug affects our application (OpenTK, http://www.opentk.com). The
recommended solution is switching to an unstable OpenAL version, or
abandoning OpenAL in favor of OpenAL-Soft, which will likely become the
Sample Implementation in the future.

[Bug 187999] [NEW] Sample Implementation does not support alGetSourcei with AL_*_OFFSET parameters

Unfortunately, AL_BYTE_OFFSET (and AL_SAMPLE_OFFSET and AL_SEC_OFFSET) were
not supported in the last release of the sample implementation. The only way
to fix it is to either get the SVN version, or more preferrably, use OpenAL
Soft (which better conforms to the AL spec):

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2010-05-01 Thread The Fiddler
This bug has become unbelievably frustrating in Lucid/Radiance/Ambiance,
to the point where I have edited the theme definition to increase border
size from 1 to 5 (diff attached). Yes, this introduces visual glitches,
but glitches are vastly preferable to not being able to resize windows
using a touchpad.

Can we please have a proper fix to this issue? This is a *real*
usability problem, not just a minor "papercut". Steps to reproduce:

1. Install Lucid on a laptop.
2. Remove your mouse.
3. Try to grab a window edge to resize.

Step 3 is way, *way* too difficult to perform reliably.

** Patch added: "Patch file to increase border size from 1 to 5. Attempts to
work around the resulting visual glitches (glitch around menubar unfortunately
remains)."

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2010-05-07 Thread The Fiddler
I won't be working on this patch anymore, as I consider it good enough
for my needs. If someone familiar with metacity theming wishes to take a
look, check the attached image for the artifacts caused by the
aforementioned patch: in short, the area left of the "File" menu should
be dark instead of light.

After a few of using this modification, this is the only negative thing
I have noticed. Everything else seems to work as expected (windows
become much easier to resize with this patch applied).

Now, that's an interesting idea. It might be possible to intercept

create an invisible fullscreen window to receive pointer messages and

[Bug 508632] Re: Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone

2010-03-24 Thread The Fiddler
The issue with Ctrl-L is that *it is not a toggle*. Once you enter text
mode, you cannot press Ctrl-L again to move back to button mode. Yes,
this was a very useful feature: enter text mode to navigate to some
distant path, then go back to buttons when you reach that. A common use
case:

1. say you are in ~/Desktop and wish to go to /etc/apt. With buttons, this is 3
cilcks (go up to root) and 2 double clicks (etc and apt). With text mode, it's
one click (toggle text mode) and 8 letters (/etc/apt).
2. once you reach /etc/apt, say you wish to navigate forward and backward in
directories that are close togethere (say, under /etc). Button mode is superior
here, because it acts as a visual, short-term history (it shows the last few
locations you visited under your current path, which is very useful when e.g.
copying files or looking for something specific).

This was yet another regular part of my daily workflow, now removed. Way
to go, I guess.

(
Troll mode on: Alt-F4 closes the window, plus we have a menu entry for Close.
Why triplicate the functionality with a close button? It's superfluous.
Troll mode off: in some cases, duplication is significantly more efficient.
Removing the toggle button effectively removes any hint of this feature's
existence from the majority of Gnome's user base.
)

Do note that Windows Vista/7 has a more efficient implementation of this
very feature: the address bar doubles up as a button bar (default mode)
and a text bar (when clicked on the left or right). No button, similar
functionality. In fact, this was one of the major improvements over the
older, text-only address bar on Windows XP.

[Bug 537286] [NEW] Very slow login after disabling gnome-panel

2010-03-11 Thread The Fiddler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

System information: Karmic amd64, 2.5GB RAM, Intel 80GB SSD, Nvidia
binary drivers (195.36.08).

Users of 3rd party docks, like AWN, docky or cairo-dock, frequently
disable gnome-panel completely. Unfortunately, this results in a strange
bug, where subsequent gdm logins become significantly slower.

How to reproduce:
1. Run gconf-editor, head to desktop/gnome/session/required_components and
rename "gnome-panel" to something else (e.g. "gnome-panel.disabled").
2. Log out and log in again. The log in takes at least 5x longer than before.
3. Re-enable gnome-panel (follow step 1 and rename "gnome-panel.disabled" to
"gnome-panel").
4. Log out and log in again. The log in takes the normal amount of time.

This is reproducible without installing AWN, docky or any other dock
application, which means it is a bug in gnome-panel or something else in
the login sequence that relies on gnome-panel. I have tried disabling
startup applications in case one of those was causing the issue, but
this didn't change anything. The only variable is gnome-panel: disable
it and login is slow, enable it and login is fast.

As a measure of the change in login performance, "fast" translates into
3 bar movements in the ubuntu logo, while "slow" translates into 15.5
bar movements.

[Bug 397269] Re: HDMI audio cuts out intermittently while normal audio plays fine

2009-09-28 Thread The Fiddler
Some more information: upgrading ALSA to 1.0.20 and Pulse to 0.9.15
didn't help with this issue. The only thing that seemed to make a
difference were the "PCI latency" settings in my BIOS: higher values
seemed to make the issue appear at a higher frequency; lower values
seemed to improve - but not fix - the situation. (I tried 1, 2, 4, 8,
16, 32, 64, 128, 255, default is 32).

My final solution was to pop in an old SBLive! 5.1 card I happened to
have lying around. This fixed the dropout issue completely (but caused
different problems which cause Pulse to die completely every few
minutes).

I don't think this issue is connected to the specific TV (I have a Sony
W4000), as I have confirmed HDMI audio to work correctly with different
hardware/software combinations.

[Bug 397269] Re: HDMI audio cuts out intermittently while normal audio plays fine

2009-08-27 Thread The Fiddler
I am experiencing the exact same issue on Jaunty (amd64, nforce4 audio,
nvidia 9500GT for hdmi & audio passthrough). I have created a "combined"
Pulseaudio sink that directs audio to both the hdmi and analogue
devices. While everything works perfectly on the analogue speakers,
audio drops out intermittently on the hdmi connection (tested with xbmc
9.04.1). The issue is similar to the effect you get when you try to use
an obsolete alsa application at the same time as pulseaudio - however,
xbmc *should* be using pulse and the sound plays correctly on the
analogue speakers.

Toggling the IE958 checkboxes in gnome-volume-control does not have any
effect at all.

Attached is my /etc/pulse/default.pa, which is silghtly modified from a
vanilla instaleld (I have added a "load-module module-alsa-sink" line
for the hdmi device, which was not recognized by the hal module, plus
set the hdmi device as default).

[Bug 478219] Re: libgtk1.2 missing on karmic

2009-12-29 Thread The Fiddler
I've also managed a similar solution on amd64, by unpacking the jaunty
packages with "dpkg -x" and manually copying then files to /usr/lib.

(This is very evil and I wouldn't recommend it in the general case.)

Re: [Bug 733349] Re: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon

2011-09-28 Thread The Fiddler
There are certainly lots of people that would like this, myself included,
for the exact same reasons as the ones mentioned here (with the current
design, it's very difficult to switch to a different window (chat,
documentation) temporarily, then switch back to the original one).

Unfortunately, the designers do not seem to agree to this decision for
opaque "design reasons". Unless they decide to revisit their design, I'm
afraid everything we do or say will fall on deaf ears.

2011-10-14 Thread The Fiddler
This issue goes away on a clean install, it only appears on an upgrade
install. Installing gnome-tweak-tool and resetting font settings also works!

@Jay S, this is a slightly different issue (i.e. Unity reading font
configuration from somewhere else than the rest of the system, while in my
case the whole system is reading configuration from some unknown place).

[Bug 830110] [NEW] Horrifically bright "Aero Snap" color (grid plugin?)

2011-08-20 Thread The Fiddler
Public bug reported:

When using Aero Snap (sorry, I don't know the official terminology for
Unity, this is the effect that happens when you move a window to the
sides or the top of the screen), I now get a horrendous goldish-yellow
color instead of the soft orange I used to get in Ubuntu Natty. This
color is painfully bright, to the point that it washes out everything
below it. I actually find myself looking away from the monitor when
moving a window to the sides, it's that bright. See the attached
screenshot!

This happens regardless of the graphics hardware or drivers (tested on
radeon, fgrlx, nouveau and nvidia) so it's apparently some
misconfiguration. It's obviously much worse on larger/brighter monitors
(esp. when using "movie" settings to watch a movie and you try to drag-
maximize the movie window).

Any ideas?

[Bug 830121] [NEW] Alt-tab causes mouse cursor to disappear

2011-08-20 Thread The Fiddler
Public bug reported:

When I press alt-tab on the keyboard (getting the brand new alt-tab
prompt), my mouse cursor disappears and the mouse becomes unusable for
as long as the prompt is visible (no click, no movement, no nothing).
This is highly confusing - I expect the mouse to be there and visible so
I can click application icons inside the alt-tab prompt.

I do that regularly when I have multiple (> 5) applications open, since
alt-tab + mouse click is faster than tab-cycling through all icons one
by one.

[Bug 681348] Re: Add "show me the desktop" keyboard or Unity dock shortcut

2011-08-21 Thread The Fiddler
Is it possible to add an icon to the bottom part of the launcher (just
below the trash icon)? That could work fine with the wmctrl hack.

Of course, the best solution would be to add this inside Unity itself
(just like the trash icon). It doesn't even need to be a full 48x48px
icon, even a 48x8 "bar" would be a large enough target, provided it
touches the bottom and left edges of the screen. Any idea if this is
possible?

You are missing a trivial solution to your hypothetical(*) tablet issue:
first click activates window picker; second click minimizes all windows,
third click restores them. Problem solved. Touch workflow is not impacted,
people get a way to quickly minimize a window and fix one of the most
egregious bugs in Unity.

That's what we have been suggesting since the very first comments in this
thread and related bug report, and this is what a user kindly implemented
back in 11.04.

(*) I say hypothetical, because Unity in 11.04 and 11.10 is not targetted at
tablets. This has been made clear time and time again, by closing
tablet-related usability bug reports and feature requests. (Besides, touch
input cannot work with invisible menus and window controls, so it's pretty
obvious tablets are not being taken into account - ergo, this is a red
herring).

No idea, how weird would it look? While you are at it, how weird would it
look to have multiple instances of the same application running on a tablet?
Indeed, why would you even need window management on a table at all? Modern
tablets always work in fullscreen mode!

As I said in my previous post, the "tablet" is a red herring. The current
incarnation of Unity is a 100% desktop shell, not a tablet shell, not a
phone shell, but a desktop shell. Its developers, even Mark himself, have
made this very clear. If, as you say, a feature makes good sense for the
desktop, then I want that feature.

When (and if) tablets become a concern, then we can revisit this discussion.
I'm quite certain that there'll be bigger fish to fry first (autohiding
dash? tiny window buttons? hidden menus?)

Indeed. The obvious solution for multiple windows would be to run expose on
the first click (as it currently does) and minimize all windows in the
second click. Simple, obvious, discoverable and with prior art (AWN and
Docky).

1. It doesn't work in Unity2d.
2. The draggable area is ~half the size of that in Windows. (IIRC, Windows
is 10px, Ubuntu is 5 or 6px).

Indeed, WinXP had 5px draggable areas - but WinXP is 10 years old now and
it might not be the most suitable point of reference for modern design
topics. The draggable area was increased in Vista (same as Win7) and I
think I recall a msdn blog mentioning this was based on usability tests
(but it's been half a decade since then and my google-fu is letting me
down, so don't quote me on that).

In any case, the drag area is invisible in Unity, so a potential size
increase should be a relatively safe change.

These are indeed fantastic, maybe they merit more attention than currently
given. (I love them on my laptop, but I cannot find a way to use them on my

But is this really necessary?

Three options:
- review feedback and pick a sensible default value
- add a new option to ccsm
- link the actual radius with some other element that makes sense, e.g. the
shadow decoration.

KDE has a configurable border size somewhere in its theme options (option
#2). Gnome 2 used to link the radius with the theme border (option
#3). Windows and MacOS (Lion) don't have a configurable size, same as Unity
(option #1). I am not sure about Gnome Shell (but the default size seems to
be slightly larger than Unity).

This is on of those cases where a sensible default, well, makes sense. A
size of 8px or 10px would be easier to hit than 5px, without impacting
usability negatively (i.e. it still falls within the visible shadow
decoration, where you are unlikely to click to raise a window). It should
be a relatively simple change with a negligible chance of regressions.

2011-11-10 Thread The Fiddler
The correct comparison is Unity vs KDE, not Gnome 3.2 vs KDE. As I said,
Gnome 3.2 is visibly faster (on my system) than either KDE or Compiz. KDE
4.7 appears to scroll and animate smoother than Unity (and KDE 4.6), but
not as smoothly as Gnome 3.2.

(Again, this is on my 6310m with the radeon drivers).

[Bug 807736] [NEW] Multiple monitors with different resolution: window maximization broken

2011-07-08 Thread The Fiddler
Public bug reported:

I have a 1366x768 laptop that I connect to an external 1920x1080
monitor.

Windows maximize correctly on the monitor that is up or left. Windows
maximize incorrectly (they half-disappear into the void) on the monitor
that is down or right. It doesn't matter which monitor is set as
primary.

Steps to reproduce: connect a second monitor and select a different
resolution than the first monitor. Set vertical layout (one monitor over
the other) or horizontal layout (side-by-side). Open one window on each
monitor. Click the maximize button and observe the brokenness. Try using
the grid plugin and observe the brokenness (windows on the bottom or
right monitor half-disappear outside the monitor).

Anyone know any fixes/workarounds for this, other than falling back to
classic mode? I am using Ubuntu for work and this is hurting my
productivity.

Indeed. But as you can see from the community response to this design
choice, there *is* an issue here and this issue might merit reconsideration
in the design. SRoesgen summed things up succinctly: when you click on an
icon, you expect something to happen. When nothing happens, the icon feels
broken.

*What* should happen is something that the design team can and should
consider. A few people have suggested minimization - rejected - but there
are other, potentially even better, possibilities.

Why am I being so persistent here? Because several users I support have
commented on this behavior spontaneously - and I had nothing better to offer
other than "it's by design" (reply: "what?") and that Unity is still under
heavy development (reply: "ah, so they'll fix it").

Anecdotal evidence but easily reproducible. Just place someone in front an
Ubuntu laptop, let him go about his daily tasks (browsing, messaging, maybe
edit a document) and have him comment on his actions and feelings. It won't
take long, especially if he uses a low-resolution monitor (e.g. 1366x768)
which requires frequent window management.

And if not minimization, then rig the button to disable scale mode on second
click (first click shows all open windows side by side, second click returns
to normal). It is extremely unintuitive that, by default, you cannot escape
scale mode once you enable it, no matter what you try: click on the icon
(doesn't work), click on the desktop (doesn't work), click on the panel
(doesn't work), click on a random window (works, but brings that window on
top even if you don't want that).

I'm starting to think that some dogfooding could improve Unity
significantly. Take the designers' Macs away and force them to use Unity
exclusively for a couple of months and some of these "won't fix" issues
might just be reconsidered. Hm, make that Unity+Inkscape+GIMP and record
their reactions, too. (Yes, I'm being ridiculous here. Mostly. It's obvious
that this bug report is now dead.)

[Bug 804463] [NEW] Window resize bug in Unity (top resize border is smaller than the rest)

2011-07-01 Thread The Fiddler
Public bug reported:

Natty has finally fixed the well-known window resizing bug! (1px borders
that previously made resizing difficult) Unfortunately, the fix is only
75% complete: only the left, bottom and right (invisible) invisible
borders have been "fattened" to make resizing easier. The top window
border is still 1px large, making resize as difficult as ever.

An oversight or bug in the implementation? Possible - but please fix!

This issue is reproducible on both a vanilla and a fully-upgraded Natty
install running the Unity interface.

[Bug 804479] [NEW] Unity misses mouse clicks to the ubuntu button and presses of the win key

2011-07-01 Thread The Fiddler
Public bug reported:

This is very simple to reproduce regardless of CPU and video hardware
and drivers (have tested r600g, fglrx and nvidia so far on both slow and
fast processors):

- click the ubuntu button five or six times in a row.
- press the win key five or six times in a row.

Unity will only pick every third click/press or so. The rest will be
dropped, making Unity feel very slow or "hesitant" to react. This
doesn't appear to be linked to CPU/GPU performance in any way - it looks
like a bug in the implementation (Unity stops reading input until the
fade-in/fade-out animation ends?)
