Strangely, there's no lockups so far tonight. The only thing I did different from my usual was to do a bit of audio conversion using soundconverter. That's about it. Only the mouse pointer works. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSystemCrash doesn't seem to have much else for me to try. [Bug 250837] Re: Soft lockups in Hardy shortly after boot up
I've run memtest a few times already since this making this report. Passes every single time. No, I can't switch to terminal (using Ctrl+Alt+F1). Even tried Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart & Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart Xorg session but keyboard appears entirely unresponsive. Nothing on-screen is clickable. Things that should have on-screen updates (eg, downloads in progress, file transfers) don't. The only thing that's responsive (sometimes) is the mouse. I'll try switching to terminal with that Alt+PrintScreen+R shortcut you suggested next time it happens. I'm not sure I want to blame this on Compiz, but after disabling it I've not had the soft lockups for 2 days now. This is new because I tried disabling Compiz in Hardy and it definitely did not help at all. [Bug 250837] [NEW] Soft lockups in Hardy shortly after boot up
Public bug reported: As per summary, shortly after booting up Hardy it will lockup forcing me to hard reset the system. This usually happens within 5 - 10 minutes of boot up. Once I forcefully turn off the power, then one of 2 things could occur. First, when I turn on the power shortly after turning it off, the system fan runs real loud and the system doesn't boot (not even POST). Second, the system boots back up normally (usually when I leave it off for a minute or two) and everything is fine. I could even reboot numerous times and the lockup doesn't happen anymore until I turn off the system and leave it off for at least a few hours. The lockups occur regardless of whatever I'm doing (web browsing, update, apt-get, even just idling the system). If I'm not using the mouse when the lockup occurs, then the mouse pointer seems to not be affected, but the rest of the system is unresponsive. Keyboard doesn't work. If I happen to be doing something, then it seems to continue fine until it needs to start access something it wasn't accessing. For example, currently playing music will continue until it finishes then the music player just stops when it needs to change to a new song. [Bug 250837] Re: Soft lockups in Hardy shortly after boot up
I'm pretty sure it's not my cooling system. Once I get past the "first boot" hurdle, the PC works perfectly fine for hours. I run for at least 2 - 3 hours (more during weekends, of course ;-) Right now, this is how I "have to" use my PC: 1. Boot up Hardy 2. Use it while avoiding accessing the hard disk for as much as possible until it inevitably locks up. 3. Forcefully cut off the power. 4. Wait at least 10 - 15 secs (preferably more). 5. Turn the PC back on, then use it for my regular stuff (music, web, torrent, videos, etc..) If the machine runs fine for hours, I doubt the cooling system is causing it to lockup soon after the first time i boot. As you can see, it's not a very nice experience, not to mention it's bad bad bad for the hardware. This is even a recently clean installed system. I was having similar issues before which prompted me to do a clean install. Previously, it was sporadic lockups occasionally occurring frequently (several reboots with lockups!!), but sometimes showing no signs of problems for 1 or 2 weeks. I did a memory test when it started to happen and everything looks fine after 1 pass. Whatever it is, sounds like a memtest should find it within the 5 - 10 minute period but it doesn't, so memory should be fine IMHO -- Soft lockups in Hardy shortly after boot up https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/250837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 250837] Re: Soft lockups in Hardy shortly after boot up
I thought 2.6.27 is not available for Hardy? Or, did you mean for me to get it from PPA? I have no troubles installing .deb packages on my own. apt takes care of the details anyway ;-) I'm not sure if testing using a LiveCD will help shake this one out, as Hardy LiveCD didn't give this problem the few times I've used it; only the *installed* Hardy did (both 32bit & 64bit) -- Soft lockups in Hardy shortly after boot up https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/250837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 250837] Re: Soft lockups in Hardy shortly after boot up
I think I've finally figured this one out. Adam Niedling's suspicion turned out to be correct. It's a problem with my video hardware. Somehow it causes these lockups occasionally. My best guess is the PCIe contact's not so good causing Ubuntu to hickup. Once I "service" the card, then everything's fine again for a long spell. This is probably explains the lack of kernel BUG messages but I'm not too sure about that. What I do find strange though is that this doesn't seem to happen when I use older versions of Ubuntu or even Windows XP. Anyway thanks for everyone's efforts and sorry for the false alarm. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Invalid -- Soft lockups in Hardy shortly after boot up https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/250837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 156502] Re: gnome-panel switches to "no workspace" with no way to get back
I have this problem too. With Compiz disabled, switching workspaces by clicking on the workspace switcher works fine. If Compiz is enabled, then using the workspace switcher causes the gnome-panel & all running apps to "disappear". Running killall "gnome- panel" brings everything back except FireFox though it's actually still running in the background. If I reboot, then start FireFox it asks me if I want to "restore session" which only happens if FF crashes or I didn't close it before shutdown/restart. Switching workspaces using Ctrl+Alt+PgUp/Pgdown/Left/Right doesn't cause this to happen. Super+E, then switching workspaces also has no problems. The only strange thing is switching workspaces using those two methods the workspace switcher applet still shows I'm on "workspace #1" I'm not sure if there's a backtrace that can be obtained since technically it's not a crash? -- gnome-panel switches to "no workspace" with no way to get back https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/156502 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 86431] nautilus-cd-burner wrongly reports burn failure
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus-cd-burner Nautilus CD Burner says there was an error writing to disc when I burn CD-Rs Steps to reproduce: 1. Open CD/DVD Creator 2. Copy some files into the window 3. Burn the files onto a CD-R nautilus-cd-burner will say there was an error writing to disc, and suggests using a lower speed. Burning DVDs doesn't give this error, only when attempting to burn onto CD-Rs. There seems to be other bug reports that mentioned testing with lower burn speeds without success, so I didn't try it out. I tried generating md5 checksums of the files i burned onto the "failed" CD-Rs and compared with the originals. They matched perfectly. This problem wasn't there in Dapper, but appeared in Edgy. I've tested burning Feisty Herd 2 ISO and some videos this way. md5 are correct. Installing with the Herd 2 CD even works fine except for known Herd 2 issues. This still exists in Feisty. [Bug 1637794] [NEW] Keyboard and mouse stops working randomly
Public bug reported: Description:Ubuntu 16.10 Release:16.10 xinput: Installed: 1.6.2-1 Candidate: 1.6.2-1 Version table: *** 1.6.2-1 500 500 http://my.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu yakkety/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status Keyboard and mouse is supposed to just work. With Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 (clean install) keyboard and mouse randomly stops working. It doesn't appear to be a system freeze as anything that's running appears to still be working. Ubuntu just fails to receive any keyboard and mouse input. The only 'fix' is to reset the PC. As far as I can tell, there's no pattern to it. I could be browsing the web and it just suddenly stops working, or it could be idle for a while and I can't get the monitor to wake up from sleep. Sometimes I could use the system for days without incident, and sometimes it just keeps on 'freezing' within minutes after a reset. Alt+SysReq+reisub doesn't work at all. [Bug 684992] Re: [ATI 3200] Artefact in launcher tooltip
I think you're right. It does seem to be some sort of video memory corruption. It doesn't happen immediately on boot but after about half an hour after I've run some applications. Happens to a different tooltip everytime, but once it happens that tooltip's stuck with the artefact until reboot. So I guess it does happen reliably Strangely, it only happens to the tooltips (so far). Also, desktop effects in Maverick doesn't give any such artefact (that I noticed) ** Attachment added: "Another tooltip corruption" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/684992/+attachment/1755763/+files/Screenshot.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/684992 Title: [ATI 3200] Artefact in launcher tooltip -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1066189] [NEW] USB keyboard & mouse frequently stops working
Public bug reported: Description:Ubuntu 12.10 Release:12.10 linux: Installed: (none) Candidate: 3.5.0.17.19 Version table: 3.5.0.17.19 0 500 http://my.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal/main amd64 Packages My USB keyboard and mouse would randomly stop working in Ubuntu 12.10. Physically detaching then reattaching the peripherals cause them to work again for a time. There doesn't seem to be a consistent time to when it stops working and usually only one or the other stops but not both at the same time. Testing on Windows 7 doesn't give any such problems so the hardware seems to be fine.
