[Bug 250837] Re: Soft lockups in Hardy shortly after boot up

2008-07-26 Thread Tan Kah Ping
Strangely, there's no lockups so far tonight. The only thing I did
different from my usual was to do a bit of audio conversion using
soundconverter. That's about it.

I have no idea how that prevents the lockups from happening, but I'd
just like to mention it in case it points to any clues I'm not seeing.

It's happened again :-(

Yesterday was fine but tonight it's gone back to that lockup pattern. Is
there any form of info I could get and attach here that'd be any help at
all?

After a bit more "testing", I found that if I use Audio CD Extractor,
then it too has the similar effect of working around the lockup. So
currently I'm assuming that any activity involving audio encoding will
prevent the lockups for the session, for reasons unknown

[Bug 125075] Re: nm-applet: requests keyring password, doesn't use it

2008-07-31 Thread Tan Kah Ping
@Nicholas:
Trying to install, I get the following:
libpam-gnome-keyring is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

It's installed by default I think, but there's no option to
remember(remind?) the password.

@derfie:
The solution in that thread may work, but isn't setting no keyring password a
security risk?

[Bug 386309] Re: Brasero gives Unknown Error

2009-06-13 Thread Tan Kah Ping
ok here's the relevant lines i think:

Manufacturer:'MCC'
Media type: '004'

I can burn discs with brasero. It just gives me "Unknown Error" and I
have to try another way to get it to burn, which is annoying.

After login, brasero gives me this error when I try to burn a DVD, so I
try going through CD/DVD Creator and that works. The next time I login
to my PC and try going straight to CD/DVD Creator, _that_ gives me this
same error, so I try brasero and it works. Trying the same app again
after the first error won't work it just gives the same error again.
That's about all I've managed to figure out on my own so far.

[Bug 250837] Re: Soft lockups in Hardy shortly after boot up

2009-05-24 Thread Tan Kah Ping
Never had this with XP back when I was still using it. Only more recent
Ubuntu releases are giving me this problem. I think it started around
the time of Feisty. It was only the occasional hang that I didn't give
it any attention but it looks like it's getting worse with each Ubuntu
release

Jaunty currently still has this. When it's in a good mood I'll maybe get
1 lockup then everything's ok after i reboot. But when it's bad like
right now... it really makes me want to go back to Windows with all the
crap it has. At least I don't have to hope if Wine will let me play any
Windows game I want.

[Bug 250837] Re: Soft lockups in Hardy shortly after boot up

2008-10-16 Thread Tan Kah Ping
ok, I've run a MemTest (yet again) and it passed (again).

Alt+PrintScreen+R followed by Ctrl+Alt+F1 didn't do anything for me at
all. The keyboard is completely dead when the lockup happens. Only the
mouse pointer works.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSystemCrash doesn't seem to
have much else for me to try. I have only this one machine so remote
debugging is out of the question. Even
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingXorg requires remote access if I've
understood it correctly.

I did find a post containing what sounds very very much like my problem:

[Bug 250837] Re: Soft lockups in Hardy shortly after boot up

2008-10-13 Thread Tan Kah Ping
I've run memtest a few times already since this making this report.
Passes every single time.

No, I can't switch to terminal (using Ctrl+Alt+F1). Even tried
Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart & Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart Xorg session but
keyboard appears entirely unresponsive. Nothing on-screen is clickable.
Things that should have on-screen updates (eg, downloads in progress,
file transfers) don't. The only thing that's responsive (sometimes) is
the mouse. I'll try switching to terminal with that Alt+PrintScreen+R
shortcut you suggested next time it happens.

I'm not sure I want to blame this on Compiz, but after disabling it I've
not had the soft lockups for 2 days now. This is new because I tried
disabling Compiz in Hardy and it definitely did not help at all.

Just to repeat myself, Gutsy runs perfectly normal on this exact
machine.

[Bug 250837] [NEW] Soft lockups in Hardy shortly after boot up

2008-07-22 Thread Tan Kah Ping
Public bug reported:

As per summary, shortly after booting up Hardy it will lockup forcing me
to hard reset the system. This usually happens within 5 - 10 minutes of
boot up.

Once I forcefully turn off the power, then one of 2 things could occur.
First, when I turn on the power shortly after turning it off, the system
fan runs real loud and the system doesn't boot (not even POST). Second,
the system boots back up normally (usually when I leave it off for a
minute or two) and everything is fine. I could even reboot numerous
times and the lockup doesn't happen anymore until I turn off the system
and leave it off for at least a few hours.

The lockups occur regardless of whatever I'm doing (web browsing,
update, apt-get, even just idling the system). If I'm not using the
mouse when the lockup occurs, then the mouse pointer seems to not be
affected, but the rest of the system is unresponsive. Keyboard doesn't
work. If I happen to be doing something, then it seems to continue fine
until it needs to start access something it wasn't accessing. For
example, currently playing music will continue until it finishes then
the music player just stops when it needs to change to a new song.

[Bug 250837] Re: Soft lockups in Hardy shortly after boot up

2008-07-24 Thread Tan Kah Ping
I'm pretty sure it's not my cooling system. Once I get past the "first
boot" hurdle, the PC works perfectly fine for hours. I run for at least
2 - 3 hours (more during weekends, of course ;-)

Right now, this is how I "have to" use my PC:

1. Boot up Hardy
2. Use it while avoiding accessing the hard disk for as much as possible until
it inevitably locks up.
3. Forcefully cut off the power.
4. Wait at least 10 - 15 secs (preferably more).
5. Turn the PC back on, then use it for my regular stuff (music, web, torrent,
videos, etc..)

If the machine runs fine for hours, I doubt the cooling system is
causing it to lockup soon after the first time i boot. As you can see,
it's not a very nice experience, not to mention it's bad bad bad for the
hardware. This is even a recently clean installed system. I was having
similar issues before which prompted me to do a clean install.

Previously, it was sporadic lockups occasionally occurring frequently
(several reboots with lockups!!), but sometimes showing no signs of
problems for 1 or 2 weeks.

I did a memory test when it started to happen and everything looks fine
after 1 pass. Whatever it is, sounds like a memtest should find it
within the 5 - 10 minute period but it doesn't, so memory should be fine
IMHO

[Bug 250837] Re: Soft lockups in Hardy shortly after boot up

2008-08-11 Thread Tan Kah Ping
It's gotten worse last weekend. It started giving me soft lockups on the

I've since clean installed Gutsy and everything's running fine for a
week now. This issue doesn't show on Gutsy at all.

Mike,

I've tried disabling ubufox add-on, restarted FireFox, then tried the
search but it still has the same behaviour. Is this sufficient to
confirm which package is affected?

Thanks

[Bug 235038] Re: System crashes when visiting a certain site.

2008-06-23 Thread Tan Kah Ping
I don't get this when i browse the earlier site, but
http://screamyguy.net/sketchableSource/index.htm#fractal.zip causes a
crash to login screen for me when i scroll up 'n down with my mouse
wheel. I'm using fully updated Hardy _without_ hardy-proposed

Disabling all except "Ubuntu Firefox Modifications" addons didn't help
at all. The site contains a Java applet so could be related to Java. I
also had a similar crash with a different site a few days ago but didn't
note down the URL at the time

[Bug 250837] Re: Soft lockups in Hardy shortly after boot up

2008-09-04 Thread Tan Kah Ping
I thought 2.6.27 is not available for Hardy? Or, did you mean for me to
get it from PPA? I have no troubles installing .deb packages on my own.
apt takes care of the details anyway ;-)

I'm not sure if testing using a LiveCD will help shake this one out, as
Hardy LiveCD didn't give this problem the few times I've used it; only
the *installed* Hardy did (both 32bit & 64bit)

[Bug 250837] Re: Soft lockups in Hardy shortly after boot up

2009-08-18 Thread Tan Kah Ping
I think I've finally figured this one out. Adam Niedling's suspicion
turned out to be correct. It's a problem with my video hardware. Somehow
it causes these lockups occasionally. My best guess is the PCIe
contact's not so good causing Ubuntu to hickup. Once I "service" the
card, then everything's fine again for a long spell. This is probably
explains the lack of kernel BUG messages but I'm not too sure about
that.

What I do find strange though is that this doesn't seem to happen when I
use older versions of Ubuntu or even Windows XP.

Anyway thanks for everyone's efforts and sorry for the false alarm.

[Bug 156502] Re: gnome-panel switches to "no workspace" with no way to get back

2007-10-25 Thread Tan Kah Ping
I have this problem too. With Compiz disabled, switching workspaces by
clicking on the workspace switcher works fine.

If Compiz is enabled, then using the workspace switcher causes the
gnome-panel & all running apps to "disappear". Running killall "gnome-
panel" brings everything back except FireFox though it's actually still
running in the background. If I reboot, then start FireFox it asks me if
I want to "restore session" which only happens if FF crashes or I didn't
close it before shutdown/restart.

Switching workspaces using Ctrl+Alt+PgUp/Pgdown/Left/Right doesn't cause
this to happen. Super+E, then switching workspaces also has no problems.
The only strange thing is switching workspaces using those two methods
the workspace switcher applet still shows I'm on "workspace #1"

I'm not sure if there's a backtrace that can be obtained since
technically it's not a crash?

[Bug 101846] Re: Ubuntu locks up - 7.04

2007-09-24 Thread Tan Kah Ping
Since yesterday, I've been getting similar problems. Yesterday 1 lockup
and today 3 already in quick succession!

In my case, it seems to be a gradual lockup. Various programs still
respond to some mouse input, cursor keeps on blinking like everything's
normal, i can still switch tabs in FireFox. But keyboard doesn't respond
& after a while, it seems moving the mouse pointer is all i can do.

[Bug 86431] nautilus-cd-burner wrongly reports burn failure

2007-02-19 Thread Tan Kah Ping
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus-cd-burner

Nautilus CD Burner says there was an error writing to disc when I burn
CD-Rs

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open CD/DVD Creator
2. Copy some files into the window
3. Burn the files onto a CD-R

nautilus-cd-burner will say there was an error writing to disc, and
suggests using a lower speed. Burning DVDs doesn't give this error, only
when attempting to burn onto CD-Rs. There seems to be other bug reports
that mentioned testing with lower burn speeds without success, so I
didn't try it out.

I tried generating md5 checksums of the files i burned onto the "failed"
CD-Rs and compared with the originals. They matched perfectly. This
problem wasn't there in Dapper, but appeared in Edgy.

I've tested burning Feisty Herd 2 ISO and some videos this way. md5 are
correct. Installing with the Herd 2 CD even works fine except for known
Herd 2 issues. This still exists in Feisty. I'll attach a screenshot of
the error message.

[Bug 386309] Re: Brasero gives Unknown Error

2009-11-26 Thread Tan Kah Ping
This bug is still present in Karmic. It's gotten more frequent too.
Usually my first attempt to burn a DVD+R will give a "Unknown Error"
from Brasero. I'm using the same media as previously mentioned (MCC).

I have to eject the disc after the error appears then reinsert the same
DVD into the drive and retry the same burn to successfully burn.
Sometimes I need to do this twice in a row before I can burn.

[Bug 1637794] [NEW] Keyboard and mouse stops working randomly

Keyboard and mouse is supposed to just work.

With Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 (clean install) keyboard and mouse randomly
stops working. It doesn't appear to be a system freeze as anything
that's running appears to still be working. Ubuntu just fails to receive
any keyboard and mouse input. The only 'fix' is to reset the PC. As far
as I can tell, there's no pattern to it. I could be browsing the web and
it just suddenly stops working, or it could be idle for a while and I
can't get the monitor to wake up from sleep.

Sometimes I could use the system for days without incident, and
sometimes it just keeps on 'freezing' within minutes after a reset.
Alt+SysReq+reisub doesn't work at all.

After creating a LiveUSB with space for storing changes, I find any

usb-creator used is from Maverick, ISO is the latest Natty image.

[Bug 684992] Re: [ATI 3200] Artefact in launcher tooltip

2010-12-04 Thread Tan Kah Ping
I think you're right. It does seem to be some sort of video memory
corruption. It doesn't happen immediately on boot but after about half
an hour after I've run some applications. Happens to a different tooltip
everytime, but once it happens that tooltip's stuck with the artefact
until reboot. So I guess it does happen reliably

Strangely, it only happens to the tooltips (so far). Also, desktop
effects in Maverick doesn't give any such artefact (that I noticed)

Expected: Share a folder through Nautilus and it's available on LAN with
the correct permission settings (read/write).

What happened instead: Samba failed to install

Steps to reproduce:

Try to share a folder using Nautilus. It asks to install samba so
proceed but install gets stuck. It asks if you want to install libpam-
smbpass but all buttons are disabled and install can't proceed.

Alternatively, install using apt-get gives the following output.

[Bug 1066189] [NEW] USB keyboard & mouse frequently stops working

2012-10-12 Thread Tan Kah Ping
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 12.10
Release:12.10

linux:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 3.5.0.17.19
  Version table:
 3.5.0.17.19 0
500 http://my.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal/main amd64 Packages

My USB keyboard and mouse would randomly stop working in Ubuntu 12.10.
Physically detaching then reattaching the peripherals cause them to work
again for a time. There doesn't seem to be a consistent time to when it
stops working and usually only one or the other stops but not both at
the same time.

Testing on Windows 7 doesn't give any such problems so the hardware
seems to be fine.
