[Bug 269656] Re: AN IRRELEVANT LICENSE IS PRESENTED TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP

Too many comments here already, but feel that I must voice my opinion
too, and say that firefox should not be installed by default if it
requires an EULA. Epiphany or Iceweasel can be used instead. Place
firefox in multiverse or whatever.

[Bug 458676] Re: karmic release candidate restarts computer when starting

2010-01-28 Thread StaffanBjörnesjö
I have just tried the lucid alpha2, and that still failed for me.

For karmic, I have tried some more variations, including upgrading
various gnome packages, gdm, trying other display managers,
upgrading/downgrading xorg and with it the video drivers, and also
trying various kernels.

It is difficult to keep track of all variations, but it seems like it has
nothing to do with graphics.
I made a clean installation of karmic, applied all updates, then removed a few
unneeded services, including pulseaudio, rebooted, and the system worked.
however, I then tried installing pulseaudio again, and the system rebooted in
the middle of the package configuration..

2010-01-28 Thread StaffanBjörnesjö
If downgrading to the jaunty version or upgrading to the lucid version (by
adding the repositories of the distribution and removing the karmic ones), then
the sound works, but no volume control, and System->Preferences->Sound does not
work (just a dialog that is waiting..).
If installing the jaunty version of pulseaudio again, then the system rebooted
just after apt-get finished, but the package system was broken afterwards, and
no sound.

[Bug 458676] Re: karmic release candidate restarts computer when starting

2010-02-12 Thread StaffanBjörnesjö
"autospawn = no" does not help at all.
The only way I know that prevents pulseaudio from starting, is to move the
/usr/bin/pulseaudio binary away from it’s location.
This allows the system to start up normally.
I then run:
(sudo mv /usr/bin/pa /usr/bin/pulseaudio); LANG=C pulseaudio - >
~/pulseverbose.log 2>&1
i.e moving back the binary before running it.

Tried 3 times, 1 time the system rebooted immediately, the other 2 it
did not.

I think I have found the error though.
If the HDMI audio is disabled (is there ANY way of doing this without
pulseaudio running? I can not find any configuration file for stuff in the
sound properties GUI), then the system appears to work properly.

Last time I ran pulseaudio I disabled the HDMI output, then enabled it
again, which caused a reboot. Maybe something in the log shows this..

It makes sense that the HDMI is causing it, since the bug can be
prevented by either removing pulseaudio or replacing the graphics driver
with fglrx.

Is there any way to disable the HDMI output (or modify any other pulseaudio
properties) via the command line.. ?
appears that the configuration is stored in some binary .tdb files in the
~/.pulse directory..

[Bug 458676] Re: karmic release candidate restarts computer when starting

2010-02-12 Thread StaffanBjörnesjö
That’s it?
If pulseaudio is not doing anything wrong with the HDMI, then something else
is. I do not care what anymore.
I have provided all information asked for, and more. I have spent a lot of time
trying to find out what is wrong, but no-one seems to care enough. Fine, let
this bug plague lucid as well then.
I’m done here.

For those who want a simple workaround, I have finally found one.
Add "blacklist snd_hda_codec_atihdmi" to "/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf".
This disables the HDMI ALSA driver, so the HDMI output will not be available in
pulseaudio, and thus not cause any problems.

[Bug 458676] Re: karmic release candidate restarts computer when starting

2009-11-05 Thread StaffanBjörnesjö
The radeon/ati drivers are obviously supposed to work in Ubuntu 9.10.
I currenly use Ubuntu 9.04 with the radeon driver, and it works well (used to
use fglrx in Ubuntu 8.10, but can not get dual screen setup to work in Ubuntu
9.04 with fglrx, while it is extremely easy with the radeon driver).

If you want a working Ubuntu 9.10 system, then install and use the fglrx driver
instead, since that should work fine.
A fix for this bug seems unlikely.

Darko: livecd "install" menu option works, while the "Try Ubuntu without
installing" menu option does not (as it goes via GDM). However, if you
need to use the livecd desktop environment, simply choose cancel when
the installation starts.

Aaron: You should try newer or older packages of GDM and/or the
radeonhd/ati driver, as the problem is related to them.

[Bug 458676] Re: karmic release candidate fails to boot

2009-10-27 Thread StaffanBjörnesjö
Trying using the release candidate again.
The logs are the result after making all system updates, and then trying to
boot.

When trying to boot normally, only "ro" kernel option. The same thing as always
happens. The kernel text appears. Then X starts and the loading screen appears.
Then the system just restarts after 2-3 seconds.
see http://launchpadlibrarian.net/34489124/k64-rc-updated.tar.gz.tar.gz

When using "ro single" kernel options and then just choosing to resume at the
recovery menu, logging in, and then running "startx", it works. i.e the desktop
appears and is functional.
see http://launchpadlibrarian.net/34489046/k64-rc-updated.via-single.tar.gz

Surprisingly, if I use the ISO dated 2009-10-26 20:31 from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ with hash
1745d887a4ee25daa3ca3ca8bfef56ee0117c28409a9ceb2c7acf23ed864ff47 the above is
the same, except that HAL appears to fail ("config/hal: couldn't initialise
context: unknown error (null)"). mouse/keyboard does not work.
No updates available either.

[Bug 458676] Re: karmic release candidate fails to boot

2009-10-28 Thread StaffanBjörnesjö
I’m guessing this is related to gdm since "startx" works but normal
booting does not.

When disabling xplash in /etc/gdm/Init/Default i get:
black screen --> login screen background --> black screen --> restart

When also adding automatic login in /etc/gdm/gdm.schemas i get:
black screen --> loading screen (presession?) --> restart

When also disabling the presession xsplash in /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default i get:
black screen --> cursor --> restart

examples above are what I see after the kernel messages when booting
using only "ro" kernel option.

/var/log/dmesg, /var/log/udev, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and .xsession_errors are
all 0 in size afterwards.
what to do?

[Bug 458676] Re: karmic release candidate restarts computer when starting

2009-10-28 Thread StaffanBjörnesjö
Have gone over it again. See archive for the various log archives.
Using only amd64 variants.

No problems with Kubuntu 9.10 RC live CD, the install, or after install.
see "910rc-stock-kubuntu-logs.tar.gz"

Booting the Ubuntu 9.10 RC live CD causes the system to restart at 2nd loading
screen, i.e just before reaching the desktop in the case of the live CD.
Stock install has same problem when booting normally.
see "910rc-stock-ubuntu-logs.tar.gz"

When booting to the installer with the Ubuntu 9.10 RC live CD and then
choosing to quit, the desktop appears, and there are no problems using
it.

The stock install can reach the desktop if booting using: choose "recovery
mode" --> choose "resume normal boot" --> log-in --> run "startx"
see "910rc-stock-ubuntu-using-startx-logs.tar.gz"

Since some logs were missing when booting normally (because system restarts),
here are some logs of when the only change to the stock install is the adding
of the line "(while(true); do sync; sleep 0.1; done;)&" to the beginning of
"/etc/gdm/Init/Default" to get some more logs written.
see "910rc-ubuntu-using-sync-logs.tar.gz"

The stock install with the only change of installing fglrx has no problems
booting normally.
(installed via "hardware drivers" program on desktop, started via "startx")
see "910rc-ubuntu-using-fglrx-logs.tar.gz"

I do not see how this could be a radeon driver issue, since the desktop
works fine if one gets there.

[Bug 458676] Re: karmic release candidate restarts computer when starting

2009-10-29 Thread StaffanBjörnesjö
With "compiz" I assume you are referring to the settings for desktop
effects.

Using fglrx, the system works fine both with and without desktop effects.
Using radeon, the desktop effects are off in the stock install, and can not be
enabled.

Have been trying to figure out more exactly when the reboot occurs.
If booting using the "recovery mode" and logging in, then "service gdm start"
gives no errors, but a one-liner output that says it is now started. However,
that new gdm process ends less than a second afterwards.
If running it directly by executing "/usr/sbin/gdm-binary", then the result is
very similar to when booting normally. In this case, the system reboots just
after the cursor appears.
What more can be done to track down the cause of the reboot ?

title Ubuntu 9.10, RC, kernel 2.6.31-14
root(hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic
root=UUID=1e015df5-1c88-4ffe-b02b-240fef87bd3c ro
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-14-generic

..the same problem as with the livecd supposedly occurs, as the system
just restarts.

when using "kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic
root=UUID=1e015df5-1c88-4ffe-b02b-240fef87bd3c ro single" instead, it comes as
far as the text menu, but something is terribly wrong here as it "crashes" and
writes text over the menu, and then ends up in a shell prompt which somehow
appears to also be a log-in prompt, and nothing makes sense..
Anyway, the text over the menu is:

General error mounting filesystems.
A maintenance shell will now be started.
CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and re-try.

..which as described above does not really happen.
I have no problems with any of my partitions on my disk running Ubuntu 9.04.

Anything else I could try?

[Bug 421298] [NEW] gitosis does not work at all since python scripts do not run as python2.5

2009-08-29 Thread StaffanBjörnesjö
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gitosis

Using Ubuntu 9.04.
Installed package version: 0.2+20080825-2

None of the python scripts in the package have a specification of which python
version is to be used.
This means that it works fine in Intrepid where the default is python2.5, but
does not work at all in Jaunty (most likely affects Karmic as well).
All I get is an exception trace which does not explain what is wrong.

Three of them specify "/usr/bin/python", and the others nothing at all.
see $$ dpkg --listfiles gitosis | xargs cat | grep /usr/bin/python

I have made a patch that changes "#!/usr/bin/python" to "#!/usr/bin/python2.5"
and adds "#!/usr/bin/python2.5" to the files with no specification at all.

Will need to change the dependency "python" to "python2.5", as this
version is specifically required.

** Affects: gitosis (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Tags: git gitosis python python2.5

[Bug 459636] Re: Can't boot into recovery mode

2009-10-25 Thread StaffanBjörnesjö
I’m using the Karmic RC.
This happens for me both using grub1 and grub2.
It also happens both on my actual hardware (780G board with HD3200), and in
virtual box (version 3.0.8 r53138).
It also happens for both i386 and amd64.

Since I also suffer from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/458676, it
seems impossible for me to get Karmic running on my actual hardware.
If this is not a showstopper, then I do not know what is..
