[Bug 1686837] Re: ubuntu fails to boot with btrfs root (unable to mount root)

2018-07-02 Thread Shelby Cain
@luizluca

Were you ever able to discover a consistent work-around? I have
*exactly* the same issue with 16.04 since something like the .67 kernel
and I've exhausted everything I can think of to try and figure out why
it is behaving this way. The only thing that works (as you yourself
stumbled upon) is hitting 'e' in grub and waiting a bit before allowing
it to continue.

[Bug 1796895] Re: Kernel 4.15.0-36 network performance regression

2018-10-09 Thread Shelby Cain
I'm seeing similar behavior on multiple physical hosts running
4.15.0-36-generic. The TCP window size only appears to grow very
slightly (from initial of 224 to around 1400) during the entire length
of the transfer.

Downgrading to 4.15.0-34-generic fixes the issue for me - TCP window
size continues to grow until it is around 24k.

[Bug 1796895] Re: Kernel 4.15.0-36 network performance regression

2018-10-09 Thread Shelby Cain
For whatever reason, after installing linux-image-4.15.0-37-generic the
system boots up fine but doesn't appear to initialize the motherboard's
built in realtek network adapter so there is no network connectivity to
test.

Is there a missing dependency in the package that needs to be installed
to ensure that network connectivity works?

Ok - for anyone that isn't used to installing kernels from proposed. It
helps to install linux-image-generic and not linux-image-X-generic
in order to pull in the modules package.

Tested and verified - network speeds are back to normal in -37.

[Bug 1782709] Re: Updating systemd kills network on bionic

2019-03-13 Thread Shelby Merrick
I recently installed a fresh system with 18.04 as well and have
experienced this exact issue when attempting to "apt dist-upgrade" from
ssh. In the two instances where systemd was being updated (a few weeks
ago and today), my ssh connection was dropped and I'm unable to re-
connect to the server. I started the upgrade from a screen session this
time and will investigate further when I can get to the console this
evening.

[Bug 1686837] Re: ubuntu fails to boot with btrfs root (unable to mount root)

2018-07-05 Thread Shelby Cain
I have indeed tried unplugging/swapping connected USB peripherals and
that never appeared to help. The only thing that worked reliably for me
was pinning the old .67 kernel. Something changed after that and the
one thing that did stand out is a huge increase in the initrd image size
of later kernels.

Anyway, out of all the systems I run 16.04 on only two suffer from this
issue and they are completely different beasts (one is a home brew
server and the other is a dell optiplex workstation - they are also the
only ones that run root on btrfs). I've updated the home brew system to
18.04 and it appears to no longer suffer from the issue but then again I
don't reboot it very often either so who really knows.

The Dell still requires me to hit 'e' and hang out in the grub editor
for a period of time before continuing to boot reliably. It is very
strange because manually adding sleep statements to the generated
grub.cfg does not work.

[Bug 1250952] [NEW] Unsafe default configuration poses security risk

2013-11-13 Thread Shelby Cain
Public bug reported:

The default configuration for this package is to:
1) Listen on all network interfaces instead of localhost
2) Performs no logging at all

To deal with #1, I propose that the "Address" and "OnlyFrom" directives
in the ziproxy.conf file be uncommented by default so that the service
is not exposed to the internet at large unless the user actively takes
steps to configure it to do so.

For #2, I propose uncommenting the "AccessLog" directive by default in
the ziproxy.conf file.

Those two changes would bring this package more inline with the sane
defaults that the squid3 package provides.

The reason I'm filing this bug report is that I recently had a VM that
was being used as an open relay to attack other hosts because of the
default configuration of this package. While I accept responsibility
for not carefully vetting all installed packages on the VM, I am
surprised that a proxy server would listen on interfaces other than
localhost without explicit configuration to do so.

** Affects: ziproxy (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1655842] Re: "Out of memory" errors after upgrade to 4.4.0-59

2017-02-03 Thread Shelby Cain
@nate Thank you! You just saved me a lot of hassle as I was about to
unpin the 4.4.0-57 kernel and update a bunch of machines on the
assumption the fix was in that version.

[Bug 737206] Re: messages on IMAP server are marked as read after retrieving

2012-04-07 Thread Shelby Cain
This seems to be a fairly common request so I've scratched my own itch
and put up a patched version of Getmail on github that adds a
configuration parameter "use_peek" to the imap and imapssl retrievers.
This leaves the end user in control of whether or not to risk using
body.peek against a potentially non-compliant imap server.

The patch set is trivial and based on a patch that was submitted for
inclusion in the Freebsd getmail port. If an Ubuntu or Debian
maintainer wanted to hoover up the patches and make them part of the
official package my feelings certainly wouldn't be hurt.

[Bug 772024] Re: tzdata update keeps changing my timezone

2013-03-19 Thread Shelby Cain
Is there any way we could see about having this package patched by an
Ubuntu maintainer?

Based on reading over the open bugs associated with tzdata on Debian's
bug tracker, this report and several other reports for the same
undesirable behavior have languished from anywhere from 6 months to
several years without a single response from the maintainer(s).

I don't know if that indicates a lack of concern about the issue or that
the package itself isn't being actively maintained beyond database
updates but in either case it seems to me that a user shouldn't have to
constantly reset /etc/timezone in order to prevent it from being updated
to a technically correct although undesirable value.

[Bug 937710] Re: [SRU] VisualVM does not start with openjdk 7

2013-04-29 Thread Shelby Cain
Same problem as Paul here. Clean install with the openjdk-7-jdk and visualvm
packages and the jdkhome setting is overridden by the package installed
/etc/visualvm/visualvm.conf to:
jdkhome="/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-amd64"

Commenting out the offending line fixes the problem.

Once again, it's broken. On first login, the launcher was there, but no
panel. On second login, there was no launcher, but the panel was there,
although the indicator-applets were missing.

I haven't done anything different since yesterday; I shut down and

why it's not working properly again.
