2021-05-12 Thread Sebastien
Can you please backport this to Ubuntu 18.04? The release is supported
until April 2023, but for some reason this has not been fixed on bionic,
which is the actual release that this bug was reported for.

Ubuntu 18 packages are broken for us until this is fixed.

2018-03-15 Thread Sebastien
Tomorrow, I boot my PC on 3.13.0.142 kernel.

There was lots of updates for several compiler.

Right after I reboot my PC and go to the -143 kernel. dkms remove
nvidia, dkms install nvidia.

then, modinfo nvidia| grep vermagic now shoes "retpoline".

At this point I know everything was fixed.

Reboot the PC, load -143 kernel.

It works. Finally.

Doest it mean the -143 kernel was compiled with different version of gcc
that default 14.04 gcc?

[Bug 1620688] [NEW] Evince crashed when a page of the pdf disapear

2016-09-06 Thread Sebastien
Public bug reported:

The issue appeared when I was working on a LaTeX document:
* the pdf generated by LaTeX (which contains 3 pages) is displayed in a Evince
Window, at the page, say, 3.
* At the next LaTeX compilation, my document contains only 2 pages.
* Since my pdf has changed on the disk, Evince try to reload it but fail
because the cursor is on the 3rd page which doesn't exist anymore. It make
Evince crashed with a : "Segmentation fault (core dumped)".

Possible desired behavior when this scenario occurs: go to the last
reachable page (in my case the second one).

Re: [Bug 814583] Re: invalid screen resolution on dell mini 10

2014-01-06 Thread Sebastien
I'm currently using Ubuntu 12.04 on the same Dell Mini 10, and xrandr is
now working:

 $ xrandr -q
 Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1366 x 768, maximum 4096 x 4096
 LVDS-0 connected 1366x768+0+0 224mm x 126mm
1366x768 60.0*+
 HDMI-0 disconnected

However the video drivers are still not working, which makes everything
slow and video playing impossible.

I'll try the latest development release when possible.

Cheers

[Bug 595521] Re: Application Error

2012-10-15 Thread sebastien
this is not a bug :
flac is not supposed to be readable by ceciia
see RELEASE notes of version 2.0.5
and the tutorial :
"For the time being, navigate with the fileselector to the examples folder in
the Cecilia folder. Once there choose the beat.aiff file. CECILIA can deal with
SDII , AIFF and WAV audio files, not much else. Click OK."
so no FLAC.

set type [lindex $stuff [expr [lsearch $stuff "soundfile,"] - 1]]
  if {$type == ""} {
set type [lindex $stuff [expr [lsearch $stuff "soundfile"] - 1]]
  }
set dur [lindex $stuff [expr [lsearch $stuff "seconds"] - 1]]
set sr [string trim [lindex $stuff [expr [lsearch $stuff "srate"] + 1]]
", "]
  set tr [string trim [lindex $stuff [expr [lsearch $stuff ${sr},] + 1]]
", "]
  set siz [lindex $stuff [expr [lsearch $stuff ${tr},] + 1]]
  return   "$dur $sr [string tolower $type] $tr $siz"
  }

so a better solution would be to modify only lib/unix/helpers.tcl and :
  a) to leave CODEA declaration intact
  b) to introduce a new variable $stuff2
set stuff2 [lrange [exec file $path] 1 end]
  c) to change the TESTA instruction for the following:
     if {[lsearch $stuff2 "AIFF"] == -1 && [lsearch $stuff2 "WAVE"] == -1 } {
(...)  }
  d) to change the assignment of the variable $type as such :
set type [lindex $stuff2 [expr [lsearch $stuff2 "audio"] - 1]]
+if {$type == ""} {
+ set type [lindex $stuff2 [expr [lsearch $stuff2 "audio,"] - 1]]
+ }
  e) to leave the rest of the code intact

  ouf,
  we went through.
I will try to fix the bug and submit a patch myself.
  cheers.

[Bug 1044942] [NEW] ubuntuone-syncdaemon hashing slows down session startup

2012-09-02 Thread Sebastien
Public bug reported:

ubuntuone-syncd is usually hashing during the first minutes of my desktop
sessions.

For some reasons (GMA500 video card not supported
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsVideoCardsPoulsbo/) my
laptop is "naturally" running slowly, especially just after login when
the unity desktop is starting.

The "top" command shows me that ubuntuone-syncdaemon is consuming 100%
of my CPU during and still after the desktop startup, which I suppose
contributes greatly to the impression of slowness I have

I see no reason why a synchronization daemon should have same priority
that processes of the user interface and I think the user experience
could be improved by changing the process niceness.

I've tried and it's a bit better, that's why I wish the line
"os.nice(19)" could be added in the ubuntuone-syncd python script.

[Bug 1044942] Re: ubuntuone-syncdaemon hashing slows down session startup

2012-09-10 Thread Sebastien
This screenshot taken just after desktop login shows a system load
greater than 4 while the laptop has only 2 cores, and ubuntuone-
syncdaemon hashing. Before I modified its nice value to 19, it was 0 and
interactivity was really bad.

[Bug 1044942] Re: ubuntuone-syncdaemon hashing slows down session startup

2012-09-10 Thread Sebastien
This screenshot shows that few minutes after having opened the desktop
session, after startup application have initialized, ubuntuone-
syncdaemon is still hashing and consumes lot of resources.

The size of files in my Ubuntu One account is about 300M each, which is
a possible explanation for such a long time spent in hashing. However I
tried this command to get a hash value of one of these files on the same
computer:

$ time sha1sum 300.mega.bytes.file
9ee2e5689ece78a5644aa357597473cb127a7e4c 300.mega.bytes.file

real0m12.493s
user0m3.976s
sys 0m8.189s

And I get a result in 12s, which makes me think that the right solution
for ubuntuone-syncdaemon could be not only executing with a higher nice
value, but also using a less time consuming hashing algorithm.

Cheers.

[Bug 243992] Re: [Intrepid] switching to the File Systems tab in GNOME System Monitor causes it to segfault

2008-06-30 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 38512] Re: Window close should close, not quit

2008-06-30 Thread Sebastien Bacher
could everybody stop comment spamming this bug? the default will not be
changed because some vocal users decided to add lot of comments there

some comments though:
- the notification area is not made to have applications staying there
- consistancy is good, but do you have many applications not closing when you
close those? that's rather pidgin and the reboot notifications which should be
changed if they are not consistant in the default installation
- seems that users will not agree on that so the best way is probably to have a
plugin available to change the setting, that's where recent comments are going

note as usual you might have the impression that everybody would like to
get the default changed reading the bug but that's because users who
have no issue don't go to comment on the bug, the topic was discussed at
the ubuntu summit when trying banshee and there was quite some users in
the room who don't like having the software closing when being told to
do so, it's really annoying to have to close the dialog, wonder why it's
still playing some music when it should be closed, go to display the
dialog again and use the menu to really close something that should have
stopped running some time ago already when you clicked on closed

> It is obvious to me that when different users wish different
reasonable behaviours you offer choice, that's what made a lot of people
"vocal" about all of this story. This seems not obvious to the rhythmbox
developers and at least I cannot figure out why.

could be that you are using the wrong stategy there:

- launchpad is a distribution bug tracker and people who read your comments are
packagers and bug triagers, not people who writte this code
- you will not convince people who are working for free on the code and trying
to fix your issues by being vocal or rant, quite the contrary
- the issue is usually that people working on free software projects are really
busy so better to be constructive and try to give a hand on the changes

working on code changes to have an option is a constructive behaviour
there rather than complaining about other contributors

2008-06-30 Thread Sebastien Bacher
the comment was not especially about your contribution but a note for
the people ranting on this bug, your comment upstream is mostly
constructive though nobody claims to know better, whoever is writting
the software is just free to take the choice he wants for his code and
being agressive to convince him to change is not really good.

I've to admit I also have difficulties to get why users go in flame mode
for such a detail, clicking on the icon is not that hard, is it? you do
it to display the dialog again anyway. having a gconf value to change
would probably reduce the discussion, it would make the rhythmbox
behaviour inconsistent between installations though and not especially a
good move, would be better to have a common behaviour in GNOME rather

[Bug 38512] Re: Window close should close, not quit

2008-06-30 Thread Sebastien Bacher
the 8 comments added on saturday don't bring any value to the bug and I
consider that spamming the people subscribed to the bug, that's what this
pointless discussion do too so I'll stop contributing to it now, some notes
though:
- giving urls to other website or blog entry is not considered as sending a
patch for the issue, you should consider attaching a patch to the bug if you
want to get it considered
- the example you mention are just opinion on the topic, there is no reason to
consider the notification area as a part of the application rather than an
indication of the fact that the application is running
- having a plugin would be nice but somebody needs to send a proper patch and
this discussion should really continue on bugzilla.gnome.org

[Bug 219587] Re: 03-turn_on_buggy-repeat_handling.dpatch causes slowdown in Evolution

2008-07-02 Thread Sebastien Bacher
the issue you mention is one which can happen when the user modify the
xorg configuration to use options upstream doesn't recommend right? in
such case I would say it's the user responsability and there is no
reason to impact on performances for all other users just to avoid
breakages for users doing such changes

[Bug 244779] Re: permission denied when removing a directory via SSH

2008-07-02 Thread Sebastien Bacher
the setup seems to be quite specific, could you open the bug directly on
bugzilla.gnome.org? the ubuntu desktop team has a lot to do and I doubt
somebody will work on this issue in a distribution specific way soon,
the bug would be better sent on bugzilla by somebody having the issue
who can reply to their comments
