*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 226815 ***

Clearly there is a bug, if the user misentered information there has to
be a meaningful error message and not "GPG: broken pipe". Furthermore
the error message should appear when entering wrong information, i.e. in
the Preferences PGP/GPG Key Id dialog and not when trying to send a
message.

2009-04-28 Thread Sebastian Urban
@hervey:

Your card is well supported by the open source driver including 3d
support. There is no reason to be angry at AMD, they are doing excellent
work in supporting the open source community by publishing chip data

very happy that AMD positions the open source driver as the primary
choice for AMD graphic cards.

[Bug 190515] Re: [Hardy] Low bandwidth with rt2400 / rt2500 drivers

2008-10-18 Thread Sebastian Urban
@Canonical:

How much money would we have to pay to get this bug fixed?
We all like Ubuntu, know that it is an open source project and development
resources are expensive. A lot of people seem to be affected. So if everybody
pays, say $ 20, will this be enough to hire a developer to fix this problem?
Perhaps we can open a "shared" support request.

[Bug 190515] Re: [Hardy] Low bandwidth with rt2400 / rt2500 drivers

2008-10-18 Thread Sebastian Urban
I think that Canonical does an excellent job of balancing bug fixes and
new features. Just look how buggy openSUSE and Fedora are. Ubuntu is in
my opinion a very stable OS. We all have to keep in mind that we got
Ubuntu for free and that fixing bugs does cost money. (even if the fix
is as simple as using the old driver by default)

I for my part am willing to pay and I encourage other people to do the
same. Open source software lives from people either fixing bugs
thenselves or paying other people to do that for them. As I have no time
for kernel hacking at the moment I am willing to pay.

[Bug 223429] Re: Resolution autodetection gives unusably big 1600x1200

2008-06-02 Thread Sebastian Urban
Same problem here on Averatec 3700 series.

I guess the problem is that X uses the BIOS for modesetting and the
Averatec BIOS reports 1680x1050 (max resolution of graphics chip) as the

Usplash suffers from the same problem and uses 1680x1050 instead of

[Bug 281730] [NEW] Do not disable apport for Intrepid Final

2008-10-11 Thread Sebastian Urban
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

In recent versions of Ubuntu (Hardy) apport has been disabled in the
final release. I do not know why this has been done, but I guess it was
done to reduce load on Canonical servers.

I think this is a bad solution because users do not get notified when
programs crash. Instead they simply disappear.

When Canonical wants to reduce the server load they should just disable
the "Report problem" button but leave the crash notification dialog
enabled.

[Bug 231983] [NEW] There should be no .bashrc, .bash_logout and .profile in newly created user home directories

2008-05-19 Thread Sebastian Urban
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bash

Right now /etc/skel contains .bashrc, .bash_logout and .profile. This is
problematic when a user changes his distribution but wants to keep his
home directory, or when home directories are stored on a NFS server and
accessed by clients with different operating systems.

I propose to move these files to /etc/default_rc (or something similar)
and execute them from /etc/profile and /etc/bash.bashrc if .profile
and/or .bashrc do not exist in the user's home directory. This is also
helpful, when Ubuntu is upgraded and the files need to be upgraded.

I can provide a patch, but I will wait for feedback on this idea before
I actually start work.

[Bug 190515] Re: [Hardy][Intrepid] Low bandwidth with rt2400 / rt2500 drivers

As far as I know the legacy driver is useless because it does not work
with NetworkManager.

I tried the newest version from https://launchpad.net/~freenx-
team/+archive for Hardy.

The bug still exists but the keyboard is now broken in a different way.
For example the right arrow key does not work from Ubuntu 8.10 and Mac
OS X clients. I'm using a german keyboard. MS Windows as client works
fine.

I even tried gconftool-2 --recursive-unset
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd but it did not help.

[Bug 339206] [NEW] [jaunty] Bug preventing dual link DVI on AMD Radeon 4800

2009-03-07 Thread Sebastian Urban
Public bug reported:

There is a bug in hw/xfree86/modes/xf86Crtc.c preventing dual link DVI.
I experienced this issue with an AMD Radeon 4830, but other cards might
be affected as well. According to the radeon developers the occurrence
of this bug depends on which DVI port of the card is used.

This problem is fixed by applying the patch from
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit/?id=8a6ed44a8b2fc5f14729dc54fec17607ced03859

I tested it and it works fine for me. Could you please include this
patch in your X packages?

[Bug 197163] Re: Mathematica renders fonts incorrectly in Hardy

2008-06-13 Thread Sebastian Urban
Mathematica looks in /etc/printcap for printers which is deprecated on
Ubuntu. Just write the name of your printers (one per line) in that file
and it should work.

@Wolfram:
Can you please switch to client side font rendering in Mathematica 7?
Server side font rendering is really deprecated and causes problems with
forwarding over SSH/NX.

I do not want to appear impatient but Hardy will be released in 6 days
and this bug affects many people. A working patch is already available.

Could the package maintainer please include the patch so that it will be
released with Hardy? Or are there any problems with the patch? If yes,
please notify us, so that we can work on a fix.

The patch only affects eqtexsvg.py which is only used by the LaTeX-
plugin, so there should be no side effects or regressions.

[Bug 55273] SRU

2008-04-24 Thread Sebastian Urban
I think this can be included as SRU.

quoting https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates "Bugs which do not
fit under above categories, but (1) have an obviously safe patch and (2)
affect an application rather than critical infrastructure packages (like
X.org or the kernel)."

(1) Patch is safe because it only affects eqtexsvg.py. This file is only
used by the LaTeX-plugin, which does not work anyway without the patch.
So it can't be broken any further.

(2) Inkscape is defintely not critical infrastructure.

[Bug 138343] evince consumes a lot of memory (1.5 GB VM)

2007-09-08 Thread Sebastian Urban
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

steps to reproduce:

1. open
http://www.physik.tu-muenchen.de/lehrstuehle/T39/T39_files/Lectures_files/QuantumMechanics2007/QM07_Kap7.pdf
2. add "zoom in" and "zoom out" buttons to your toolbar (i'm not sure if this
is really needed, but I reproduced the problem in this way)
3. switch on continous-mode
4. scroll (slowly) to the bottom of the document
5. click on "zoom in" till zoom level reaches 200 %
6. scroll (slowly) to the top of the document

result:
evince consumes about 1,5 GB vm-memory (600 mb writeable).
system becomes very slow.

If the steps do not work for you, try zooming in and out again.
I verified this with compiz running, 1 GB physical RAM, 2 GB swap.

[Bug 133061] insert formula should have keyboard shortcut and toolbar icon and focus the formula text box automatically

2007-08-16 Thread Sebastian Urban
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

For many scientific writers OpenOffice.org Writer is the text processor
of choice when they hack together a sheet of formulas quickly.

However at the moment the default configuration makes it necessary to
open the Insert->Object->Formula menu to insert a formula. Even worse,
after inserting one the formula text field is not focused and I have to
click with the mouse (!) on it to focus it. After entering the formula
there is no obvious way to leave the textbox, so I have to use the mouse
again.

This heavily interrupts workflow when entering text with many formulas.

Suggesstions:

1. Add keyboard shortcut for insert formula by default. (for example Ctrl+F)
2. Add toolbar icon for insert formula by default. (Perhaps replace "Data
Sources" with it, I guess there a more people using formulas than there a
people using data sources in their text documents.)
3. Automatically focus formula text box after inserting.
4. Provide easy and obvious way to leave formula text box by keyboard. (i. e.
"Press Shift+Enter to return to your text document." in status bar)
5. Refresh rendered formula faster after user stopped typing (300 ms should be
maximum delay!)

[Bug 139907] Re: evince aborts printing when window is closed during creation of print job

2007-09-16 Thread Sebastian Urban
I have created a patch for this bug.

Evince was preparing the document for printing in a background job. This job
was canceled when Evince was closed.
The patch solves this by
1) not canceling the print job when the document window is closed
2) hiding instead of deleting the document window, when there are still print
jobs running.
(this is needed, because some printing code depends on the window)

Furthermore I found that printing setting may be associated with the
wrong print job if the user prints the document multiple times with
different settings within a short period of time (i.e. when the first
print job is not finished yet). This is also fixed in this patch.

Additionally I changed the print job title from "evince_print" to the
document name.

This is my first patch to an open source project, so tell me about my
mistakes.

I mean GIDs less than 1001.

On my system the following groups are shown:
root

dhcp

klog

lpadmin
messagebus
admin
crontab
ssh
avahi-autoipd
avahi
netdev
haldaemon
powerdev
gdm
slocate
vboxusers
debian-tor

I guess it is okay to show some of them with a description what they are
for and allow an admin to change who belongs to the group. However it
should not be possible to delete system groups or change the GID,
because daemons depend on them.

[Bug 185703] [NEW] hibernate (suspend-to-disk) is very slow

Although suspend to disk works fine on my ThinkPad R61 it is very slow.

Suspending takes about 90-120 seconds and resuming the same time again. Windows
