Re: [Bug 231539] Re: Ubuntu Hardy - Hard shutdowns / poweroff 2.6.24-16-generic

2008-08-27 Thread Scruffynerf
Hiya,

I've not noticed it, however I've also upgraded to kernel version
2.6.24-19-generic, and have not noticed it.

I guess that this can be closed off then, and efforts directed to the
other power management issues that people have raised bug reports on.

cheers

Scruffy

[Bug 356515] Re: Jaunty: indicator applet cannot be removed from panel when inactive (it simply cannot be seen)

2009-04-23 Thread Scruffynerf
I'm experiencing it as well. When the applet is inactive, there is no
icon to indicate position, or that it's even on. When moving the window
list panel application around, it will run up against it and compresses
the window list icons - as they should and do when running into any
other panel applet. The only problem is that there is nothing viewable
where the applet is located.

Ubuntu Jaunty btw.

[Bug 263555] Re: [intrepid] 2.6.27 e1000e driver places Intel ICH8 and ICH9 gigE chipsets at risk

2008-09-24 Thread Scruffynerf
This might be a red herring, however over at
http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/9/24/133 is a report of the same symptoms on a
RealTek ethernet system.

FWIW, I apologise to all and retract my inane statement earlier in the thread
at:

I'll plead a very bad month.

[Bug 263555] Re: [intrepid] 2.6.27 e1000e kernel places Intel gigE chipsets at risk

2008-09-22 Thread Scruffynerf
Unless Canonical wants liability for
a) Individual user's destroyed hardware
b) Crippling reputation damages, especially against the 'new to linux' groups
I'd echo the suggestion to pull the liveCD's until this is fixed.

When new linux users discovered permanently corrupted hardware after
trying Ubuntu, and this gets out in the wider webs, all of Ubuntu's
efforts at promoting Ubuntu will also be destroyed.

Breaking known good hardware is a problem greater than keeping to a
self-imposed delivery schedule.

[Bug 231539] [NEW] Ubuntu Hardy - Hard shutdowns / poweroff 2.6.24-16-generic

2008-05-17 Thread Scruffynerf
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Hardy (8.04) with Linux kernel 2.6.24-16-generic. When shutting down
(Quit - Shutdown). On selecting, 1 of two things occur:
a) Network Manager reports connection errors, the usplash briefly appears, then
immediate loss of power.
b) Shutdown usplash occurs, works normally for 10-15 seconds, them immediate
loss of power.

Once power is off, I can hear hard drives and fans self-spinning down.

Have tried adding "acpi=force noapic" to boot profile, however that does
not appear to help.

Hardware Specs (Desktop)
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ (@ 2Ghz)
Mobo: MSI K8T Neo K8T800 (VIA 8xxx chipsets)
Video: GeForce 6600 GT, 256 MB, 300 MHz (Running Nvidia 169.xx drivers)
Ethernet: RealTek RTL-8169 rev 10
Hard Drives: 1 WD 120gb (system), 1 Seagate 320gb (Storage) (Both ATA)
Optical Drives: 1 Pioneer DVR-108, 1 Pioneer DVR-112
Standard Floppy drive

I've attached the outputs as requested from the power management
debugging readme, however the system will not let me tarball the ACPI
directory.
