[Bug 57502] Re: JMicron PATA/SATA Controller does not work

2006-10-05 Thread SFAOK
"It also detected the CDROM okay aswell. The only thing is it is asking
me for my hard drives contoller (JMB363) driver. I select Jmicron and
nothing happins. Doesnt like it... is there some driver i can just put
on floppy and get er done?"

The version of initramfs-tools has increased but not the version of
busybox-initramfs has not - could this be the problem?

[Bug 64519] Installer crashing whilst copying files

2006-10-07 Thread SFAOK
Public bug reported:

Once again, posting as instructed by the installer :)

I've tried installing 4 times and I'm 99.9% certain this is happening at
different places during the install. The PC speaker usually beeps and 2

has just frozen. Here's the report, and I'll attach the requested files
in a moment.

[Bug 64519] Re: Installer crashing whilst copying files

2006-10-07 Thread SFAOK
I tried doing an apt-get update / upgrade before trying again and this
time installation finished. I thought it might be a fluke so tried the
same thing again and even with the updates, the installer still crashed.

I don't know if it's related, but I've had a couple of installer crashes
before the 'Copying Files' stage. The installer is 'Scanning files' (or
similar), it hits 15% and then doesn't do anything else. Sometimes the
system speaker beeps, sometimes it doesnt, sometimes there's a crash
report, sometimes there's not, sometimes X freezes, sometimes it
doesn't... It might be the same problem as what's causing the bug
reported above but unfortunately I don't have any log files to hand
atm... Let me know if you want them/want me to file a separate bug
report.

[Bug 64574] JMicron controllers not recognised by Grub?

2006-10-07 Thread SFAOK
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub

I have an Asus P5B motherboard with a PATA DVD drive and a SATA HDD,
both of which are attached to the JMicron controller on the
motherboard. I can get an Ubuntu Edgy daily (I last tried the 7th
October build) to install but upon rebooting, Grub reports an error
(error 21). I believe this is because Grub can not see the drive
attached to the JMicron controller or the controlelr itself.

Once the ICH8 fix is released, I hope that channel on the motherboard
will work instead, however people wishing to use the JMicron controller
will still face the problem.

[Bug 63516] Re: ICH8 doesn't work

2006-10-09 Thread SFAOK
My understanding is that the fix has been uploaded but has not been
released yet. Once it's released it should make it into the next days
daily build. I'm not sure what happens between the fix being comitted
and being released - I'm guessing there's some sort of code review that
takes place before it is released. I'm hoping it'll get released today
and be in tomorrow's build and I can finally get Ubuntu installed on my
new computer :)

I think the Grub error may actually be a problem with Grub not
recognising the JMicron controller, which is actually a different bug to
this one. I've filed a bug report here:
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/grub/+bug/64574

[Bug 63516] Re: ICH8 doesn't work

2006-10-11 Thread SFAOK
I've tried the daily alternate CD for today (11th October) and my drive
attached to the ICH8 wasn't recognised. I'm guessing the fix hasn't made
it into the installer's kernel. I would try the live CD (I usually have
better luck with it (touch wood ;) as I think it has more up to date
packages) but the last build was 09/10, that's before the fix was added
to the kernel :(

[Bug 54411] Re: Does not recognize RTL-8168/8169/8101/8111 wired adapters.

2006-10-11 Thread SFAOK
A couple of things: firstly, I think bug 63314 is a duplicate of this
one. Secondly, the last daily live CD I used actually found my network
card and set up my network connection automatically... however, the
alternate CD for today (11th October) is still not detecting the NIC.

[Bug 57502] Re: JMicron PATA/SATA Controller does not work

2006-09-29 Thread SFAOK
More confusing behaviour that I think is related to this bug (apologies
if not).

I have a P5B and I've tried the beta (the desktop install CD) with an
IDE DVD writer and a SATA hard drive. I've put the hard drive on both
the JMicron controller and the ICH8 controller, tried both AHCI and IDE
options on both and tried no extra boot command line options, as well as
all-generic-ide and all-generic-ide irqpoll. In all of those
combinations, the boot splash screen comes up, the DVD drive does
nothing and after a while a screen with "Busy Box" comes up, complaining
that it can't access tty because job control is turned off.

Once again, apologie if this is the wrong place to be putting this...

[Bug 57502] Re: JMicron PATA/SATA Controller does not work

Thanks for all the work on this problem and the feedback.

Are there bugs filed for the ICH8 problem Ante says is known and the bug
that Ben filed about the JMicron patch not showing up in certain
releases? I've spent some time searching for them both but without any
luck. If those are the bugs that are causing me problems, I'd like to
track the bug pages for them. Thanks again!
