Looking at other bug reports, this appears to be a Linux bug. See bug # 109211. I've experienced this bug as well. [Bug 228624] Re: DVD writer not working since hardy upgrade
This worked. I did the following: Entered `ls /dev/scd*` which showed that /dev/scd0 was not a device. Connected a Sony DRX-S70U (which is a portable DVD reader/writer) to a USB port. `ls /dev/sc*` showed that /dev/scd0 was a device. Put in a DVD movie. Killed the movie player. Ran `handbrake -i /dev/scd0 -t0` which would read the titles on the dvd moive. Handbrake encountered a screen full of errors in attempting to read the DVD. However, it eventually got over them and read the titles. Ejected the DVD. Unplugged the USB DVD reader/writer. Entered the code referenced by Charles Atkinson in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/preferences.fdi Connected the USB DVD reader/writer. Put in the same DVD movie. The player did not start (as expected). Entered `ls /dev/sc*` until /dev/scd0 showed up. Ran handbrake again as above. Handbrake showed NO errors this time and read all the titles. I did this three times. Each time turning on/off the code in preferences.fdi (using comments). Each time I got the same results. So the work-around works for USB DVD drives. I haven't tested it with a USB hard disk drive, which I will do eventually. However, this is a good sign. The machine is an IBM Thinkpad X60s. I have what appears to be the same problem with a Sony Vaio VGN-A270P. It has an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 chipset. I had upgraded 8.04 (Hardy) to 8.10 (Intrepid) and rebooted. On the reboot, X would not load. There seemed to be a few problems with X when trying to switch users, but I didn't play with it enough to determine exactly what the problems were. Perhaps in fixing these problems, something else got broken. [Bug 155157] Re: no video overlay on external monitor
Good news. I ran a test of the current Ubuntu 8.10 beta (Intrepid Ibex) and the results are highly promising. the test machine was an IBM Thinkpad X60s w/2GB RAM. I downloaded the current Ubuntu 8.10 beta (Intrepid) from http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta on Friday, 17 October and burned a CD with the image. I also downloaded a test video (F-18A_Active_Aeroelastic_Wing_flight_test.ogg) onto another machine, because I needed an open source format for the test to preclude having to load a bunch of codecs. I wanted to use just the default Intrepid environment. I booted the Thinkpad with the Intrepid image and copied the test video (via sftp) from the other machine. I then connected an external monitor to the Thinkpad and configured it with the default application (I think it was Screen Resolution in Preferences). I took the default desktop, which spanned both the laptop's screen and the external monitor. I restarted X (logged out and back in). Finally I double clicked on the video icon. It DID DISPLAY on the external monitor.Yeah! I shut down the laptop and rebooted it's native OS: Ubuntu 7.10, Gutsy. (I use Gutsy because of some other problems with 8.04, Hardy.) The external monitor was still connected. In this configuration, it mirrored the laptop's screen. (I checked the Administration>>Screen and Graphics and verified that that's how it was configured.) I copied the same test video to this machine and double-clicked on it. The video displayed on the Thinkpad screen but DID NOT DISPLAY on the external monitor. So there you go. This is NOT a complete test of the display functionality, but it is certainly encouraging. Thanks to everyone for all their hard work. Okay. HA! I've been running the live CD trying to figure out what conditions made Hardy (8.04) freeze. This won't give you the log - it FREEZES, then the log disappears on reboot. I'll reinstall Hardy and do this again. In any case, this is what I've been up to. Booted from the Hardy live CD. Hadn't hooked up the Wacom yet. Running a tail on /var/log/messages. Nothing happened the past couple of days (just wireless manually switched off for a day then on for a day). Got your message, so I plugged in the Wacom tablet. Got some kernel messages immediately at the connect - just reporting what it was doing, they don't seem terribly significant. Moved the mouse and pen a bit, but no cursor movement. Could get a right-click event on clicking the mouse (a mouse left click) but that's it. To remove the right click menu (from the Gnome desktop), I have to move the mouse a bit using the trackpad and then left click. Went to the bathroom. When I got back the system had frozen. No messages in /var/log/messages that showed up before the freeze (other than the Wacom connection messages mentioned above). I'll Install Hardy and try this again. I've installed Hardy. Here's some notes I kept while and attempting to recreate the freeze. * Installed Hardy (8.04) from the live CD. Wireless switched on from the start - remains on. * Installed ATI accelerated graphics driver when offered the opportunity by Hardware Drivers. Did not install other updates. * Restarted computer as requested by install. fglrx driver now in use * Started terminal and `tail -f -n10 /var/log/messages` * Disabled screen saver and screen-off power manager - need to be able to see screen when machine locks up * Waited 2 hours. Touched the trackpad occasionally - no problems. * Plugged in the Wacom tablet. Messages showed up in /var/log/messages about the event - nothing suspicious. * Touched the trackpad occasionally to see if the machine was still alive. * 56 minutes later, the system is locked up. No response ctrl-alt-del. No response to ctrl-alt-backspace. * Powered off by holding the power button. * Removed the Wacom table connection. * Powered on the machine. The Xorg.0.log.old file is attached. I did a diff on Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old. There were only a few differences. "Does the capslock key still work?" Don't know. I'll see if I can get it to freeze again and try that. "If you're feeling particularly adventuresome, you might try some remote debugging. If you can find another computer and two spare serial ports, connect them by a "null modem cable" (different than your regular serial cable) and see if any strange messages come up during the freeze, or if you still get occasional --MARK-- messages." I had a tail -f running on /var/log/messages the whole time. All I saw was --MARK-- messages. However, that's not to say that the machine froze before the message could appear on the screen. "http://wiki.sangoma.com/wanpipe-linux-system-debugging has a guide, if you dare." Hey, I'll take a look. Don't know how good I'll be at this, though. I suspect this is a kernel problem. There are lots of threads here and elsewhere about freezing problems in Hardy. The initial suspicion was the Nvidia drivers, but several people had the problem on ATI machines (such as this one). Another suspicion was wireless - which is why I was trying wireless on and off. I'll keep plugging at it. The next thing I'm going to do is let the machine install all the updates. One of them I've noticed is a new kernel. [Bug 230541] Re: Wacom tablet doesn't work in Gutsy, freezes OS in Hardy
Interesting The wheel on the mouse with the Wacom tablet causes the desktop to shift left/right. Scroll the wheel and the desktop shifts. Anyway, here's the results of the latest. Powered up again - still have not applied updates. Installed openssh-server (via apt-get). System's name is Raven Pre-freeze: Caps-lock works. Responds to a ping. Can connect to Raven via ssh from another system. In ssh on another system, I started `tail -f -n10 /var/log/messages` and left it running. Let it sit with the Wacom tablet connected. It took just over two hours for the freeze to occur. Post-freeze: Caps-lock DOES NOT work. DOES NOT respond to a ping. The terminal running the ssh connection to Raven DOES NOT respond. In addition, there were no additional messages in /var/log/messages except for --MARK--'s that appeared on the ssh-connected machine. These are the same --MARK's-- on the terminal I opened on Raven's desktop with the `tail -f /var/log/message` - nothing additional. I guess this means it's a kernel problem (not hardware I suppose since this doesn't occur in Gutsy). I'm not going to try the null-modem cable unless you think it might be useful. Let me know. I'm going to apply the updates - new kernel and all - and try again. [Bug 272188] [NEW] USB devices cause desktop to freeze in Intrepid
Public bug reported: This bug was reported in Hardy (219345: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/219345). I have determined that some USB devices will cause the desktop to freeze. In this frozen condition, pressing the caps-lock key does not cause the caps-lock LED to light and ctrl-alt-del does not appear to register - there is no reboot. The machine is a Sony Vaio VGN-270P.The linux release was 2.6.27-2 generic. I booted the machine with Intrepid using a live Intrepid CD - that is, I did not install the distribution on the machine, but only in memory. Plugging in a Wacom tablet via USB will cause the desktop to freeze - this happened within seconds of plugging in the table and moving the mouse and pen. This is the same behavior that occurred in Hardy. It did not occur in Gutsy, but the tablet was not functional in Gutsy, either. A USB-connected disk drive appears to work properly. This was not the case in Hardy - the anomalous behavior was mostly in locking folders after copying into them. I haven't tested the USB-connected drive sufficiently to determine if it works or not. Good luck with this. [Bug 155157] Re: no video overlay on external monitor
If the external monitor is showing a blue rectangle where the video is supposed to be, this is probably a video overlay problem associated with the driver for the particular graphics chips. I obtained this info from here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=123082 I have the same problem with a Thinkpad X60s - Intel graphics. I did what anewguy suggested and was able to display videos on an external monitor. This will work, he says, if you have an overlay problem. You start the video with one instance of the player (e.g., mplayer). It should show a blue rectangle on the external monitor. Pause it and minimize it. Then start the video again with another instance of a player. I had to use a different program because the default program would just start the video all over again. So I started with mplayer, paused it. Then I started the video again with vlc. This worked. The video showed up on the external monitor. So at least on a Thinkpad X60s, there's an overlay problem in the graphics drivers. [Bug 219345] Re: random freezes on Ubunt Hardy Heron
Please see Bug #230541. I reported this a couple of weeks ago. The problem started in Hardy - it would freeze (no keyboard, caps-lock key did not function - that is, the caps-lock led did not light). I encountered this problem when attaching a Wacom tablet (usb). However, in working with it and Justin Dugger (the Ubuntu Wacom guy), I discovered the system would freeze with ANY usb device - disk drive, tablet, and so on. I believe the problem is in the usb device driver. There's additional data with bug #230541 - dmesg file, logs, etc. Roy -- random freezes on Ubunt Hardy Heron https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/219345 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 230541] Re: Wacom tablet doesn't work in Gutsy, freezes OS in Hardy
As you suspected, it looks like a kernel problem. I loaded a different distribution on the laptop (Fedora 9) to see if I could get a different behavior. No such luck, of course - being a kernel problem, the software is pretty much the same. But I did notice that I could get the laptop to freeze by plugging in a USB drive, one with an IDE disk, and copying several GBytes to it. Also tried an sha1sum on a partial file (an incomplete .iso I tried copying to the drive). This caused a freeze also. After rebooting (several times to verify the problem), I left the USB drive unplugged and plugged in a USB memory stick (1.0 GBytes). I copied several large files to it - and it caused the system to freeze as well. So It's not the Wacom. It's the kernel. Should I report this somewhere? [Bug 230541] Re: Wacom tablet doesn't work in Gutsy, freezes OS in Hardy
Okay, I've updated the machine - it's current. I've plugged in the Wacom tablet and let it sit for 5 hours. The machine did, indeed freeze, but here's what I did: The tablet did not function. `lsmod` shows a wacom module running, so I'm assuming I don't have to rebuild the kernel to get this thing to work. The mouse gives a right-click event when clicking. The stylus and eraser do nothing. Sometimes I can get the desktop to rotate - from one desktop to the other. I modified /etc/X11/xorg.conf to add the lines suggested at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=765915 (HOWTO: Wacom in 8.04 Hardy). These are as follows: -- Section "InputDevice" Driver "wacom" Identifier "stylus" Option "Device""/dev/input/wacom" Option "Type" "stylus" # Option "ForceDevice" "ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY Option "USB" "on" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Driver "wacom" Identifier "eraser" Option "Device""/dev/input/wacom" Option "Type" "eraser" # Option "ForceDevice" "ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY Option "USB" "on" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Driver "wacom" Identifier "cursor" Option "Device""/dev/input/wacom" Option "Type" "cursor" # Option "ForceDevice" "ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY Option "USB" "on" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Driver "wacom" Identifier "pad" Option "Device""/dev/input/wacom" Option "Type" "pad" Option "USB" "on" EndSection -- and in the ServerLayout section,... -- InputDevice "stylus""SendCoreEvents" InputDevice "cursor""SendCoreEvents" InputDevice "eraser""SendCoreEvents" InputDevice "pad" -- Then I rebooted the machine. This did not seem to fix anything; however, the pen and eraser will now make the cursor go up and down but not left and right. While I was looking at the /var/log/xorg.0.log file, the machine froze. The "Intrepid Ibex kernel" huh? Okay, I'll try to find that and see if I can get it to work. Otherwise, I'm not sure I'd be able to find the broken lines. In any case, something kind of odd happened. I was looking at Xorg.0.log and wondering why there were no Wacom entries. I reached over and moved the Wacom mouse - and the cursor actually moved as it should. I tried the pen and that worked, too. But then the desktops started shifting and the mouse and the pen stopped working. However, the Xorg.0.log file did contain Wacom entries. I guess X doesn't do anything until it gets an input to do something with. [Bug 230541] Re: Wacom tablet doesn't work in Gutsy, freezes OS in Hardy
Good news. I upgraded a Sony Vaio VGN-A270P from 8.10 to 9.04. The problem with the Wacom tablet had seemed to extend to general problems with the USB interface. So, I first plugged in a USB hard drive and copied about 30 GB to it. This would have caused the OS to freeze in 8.10. However, the next morning everything seemed fine. I then plugged in a 6x8 Wacom tablet and moved the mouse and pen around a bit. In 8.10 this, too, would have eventually caused the OS to freeze. That did not happen, the OS is still happy, but neither the pen nor the mouse behaved as expected. Initially the mouse would move the screen cursor as expected, but now it doesn't move the cursor at all. The pen will move the cursor only vertically. I opened Gimp, which recognized that a Wacom 6x8 was attached (looking at Preferences>Input Devices). But neither the pen nor the mouse behaved properly in Gimp. I have not done any configuration in /etc/hal/fdi/policy (the wacom.fdi file) nor any in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Perhaps doing that will make things work. At least the OS doesn't freeze. [Bug 1773597] Re: USB flash drive won't mount
This bug occurred on a Dell Studio XPS. It also occurred on an Alienware machine - both fairly old, perhaps 8 years. The Alienware machine was at the same software level as the Dell Studio XPS. On the Alienware machine, occasionally after some time (say five minutes). With an encrypted drive, the drive might appear (or not), but access was iffy - with the system asking multiple times for the password, but almost never granting access. When access was granted, access to the files was eventually terminated - the directory window in Nautilus eventually showing no files. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1773597 Title: USB flash drive won't mount To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1773597/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1773597] Re: USB flash drive won't mount
After a reboot, inserted encrypted USB flash drive (32G Lexar). Waited about 15 minutes and the request for the password was displayed. I entered the password, but nothing happened. Waited five minutes - then rebooted with the drive still inserted. It was not recognized (by Nautilus) upon completion of the reboot. Removed and inserted and it was eventually recognized, but no window asking for a password showed until I opened the "file cabinet" and clicked on the drive listed on the left. A request for password then appeared. I entered the password and was able to open the drive. However after about ten minutes, I could not open any files - a lock icon appeared on the file icon. [Bug 1773597] Re: USB flash drive won't mount
Booted a tower machine (it had been powered off) running Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful). Ran SW updates. Rebooted. Inserted encrypted USB flash drive. Was asked several times for the password. Gave it - multiple times. Finally I was able to open drive. That lasted about 10 minutes when all the files in the window disappeared (folder is empty message). Pulled the flash drive and reinserted it. This time it worked. Request for password showed up in its black window. I entered the password (twice - I might have screwed it up). [Bug 1773597] Re: USB flash drive won't mount
The latest Ubuntu update included Linux version 4.15.0-23-generic. This appears, after a single test after a reboot, to have allowed a FAT- formatted USB memory stick to be recognized and mounted. I opened the device and copied a file to it then unmounted it with no problem. However, the encrypted device still does not work. When inserted, a dialog box appears that allows no input except in it. I entered the pass phrase, but nothing happened except the pass phrase (dots only) were spread out beyond their input area. The machine was effectively locked out. Previously, I had power cycled the machine to get out of this condition, but this time I had an appointment and just left it. When I returned several hours later, the dialog box had disappeared. Yet I was not able to access the device: a box with an error message appeared instead. Nor could it be ejected: "Writing data to Lexar USB Flash Drive Device should not be unplugged." -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1773597 Title: USB flash drive won't mount To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1773597/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1773597] Re: USB flash drive won't mount
I inserted a standard USB drive into my laptop (Ubuntu 18.04). After about five minutes it was recognized and mounted. I inserted my encrypted USB drive, but it was never mounted - presumably because the file system type was not recognized - because something is wrong with the decryption feature. Five minutes is way(!) too long for the standard USB drive to wait to be recognized. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1773597 Title: USB flash drive won't mount To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1773597/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1773597] Re: USB flash drive won't mount
This problem may be associated with the USB software. I shut down the machine and pulled the battery and the Logitech mouse USB receiver. Booted the machine. With just the sign-in box on the screen, both the mouse and the trackpad worked. Immediately after sign-in the mouse could not be controlled by the trackpad. The keyboard continued to work. I rebooted the machine after removing the Logitech USB receiver. The trackpad would not work. I inserted the Logitech USB receiver, but it did not allow the mouse to work. [Bug 1773597] Re: USB flash drive won't mount
My apologies. Sorry, but the encrypted USB drive was defective. I put it in another computer (Ubuntu 17.10) and it would be recognized only if it were held in the drive in a particular way. Either an internal connection is bad or the external contacts are not aligned properly. The other USB drive still takes 4+ minutes to be recognized and mounted by the OS. In the other computer (Ubuntu 17.10) it comes up in less than 30 seconds. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1773597 Title: USB flash drive won't mount To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1773597/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1773597] Re: USB flash drive won't mount
I booted the Dell Studio XPS machine from a USB drive loaded with Ubuntu 16.04. I inserted multiple USB drives (one holding the OS was already there) and two others. They mounted within seconds and Nautilus displayed their contents when the drive was clicked on. This did not happen in Ubuntu 18.04. A drive would not come up for 4+ minutes. And would not mount multiple USB drives. HOWEVER, something hinky did happen. When multiple drives were mounted, the USB mouse would not function. So there is something wrong with the USB subsystem in that machine. But, 16.04 definitely worked better than 18.04.

I booted another machine (currently running 18.04) from the USB memory stick with 16.04 on it. I plugged in three USB memory sticks. Each came up in a couple of seconds. When that machine is running 18.04 it takes 4+ minutes for a single memory stick to be available. Note that dmesg shows that the OS sees the memory stick nearly immediately. It's Nautilus (guessing) that doesn't make it available.
