[Bug 374512] Re: Traceback when attempting to open gwibber

2009-06-16 Thread Ronald McCollam
A few days after I reported this bug, it went away as mysteriously as it
appeared and I've been unable to reproduce since. I will report back if
it happens again (and will play with the python-indicate package if it
does as well).

[Bug 383930] Re: checkbox needs a headset test

2009-06-08 Thread Ronald McCollam
This should be covered as a result of implementing the Extended Audio Testing
spec:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/Specs/ExtendedAudioTesting

(Checkbox should also verify that the inputs and outputs are detected
properly; e.g. that the headphone output as labeled on the card is the
headphone output as labeled in volume control.)

[Bug 393522] [NEW] empathy tray icon does not change state when state changed in fusa applet

2009-06-29 Thread Ronald McCollam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

When changing status from 'available' to 'offline' via the fast-user-
switching panel applet, empathy correctly changes to 'offline' but the
empathy notification icon remains in the 'available' state. This
appears to be a regression as the behavior in jaunty is as expected.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Ensure that the fusa applet is present on the panel.
2. Open empathy and put at least one account in the 'available state.
3. Observe that both the empathy notification icon and the fusa status icon are
a green circle, indicating 'available'.
4. Click the fusa applet and select 'Offline'.
5. Observe that while empathy actually goes offline and the fusa applet status
is updated, the empathy notification icon remains in the 'available' state.

Expected results:
1. empathy notification icon is updated to reflect 'offline' status.

Actual results:
1. empathy notification icon remains in 'available' status.

[Bug 382430] [NEW] Notification icon references "Check for updates" button but the button is labeled "Check"

2009-06-01 Thread Ronald McCollam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

When reporting out-of-date package information, a notification icon
appears. The text when hovering over this icon is:

The update information is outdated. This may be caused by network
problem or by repository that is no longer available. Please update
manually by clicking on this icon and then selecting 'Check for updates'
and check if some of the listed repositories fail.

However, after clicking on the icon to launch Update Manager, the text
of the button is merely 'Check' rather than 'Check for updates'.

[Bug 369527] [NEW] Attempting to watch TV in totem with a USB capture card results in confusing message

2009-04-29 Thread Ronald McCollam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I connected a Pinnacle 801e USB TV capture card to the USB port and
opened Totem. Under the Movie menu, I selected the option "Watch TV on

Totem is missing a channels listing to be able to tune the receiver.

[Bug 341928] [NEW] Consistently reproducible "device or resource busy" error on partitioning

2009-03-12 Thread Ronald McCollam
Public bug reported:

Upon partitioning during install, I receive the following message:

Error informing the kernel about modifications to partition
/dev/cciss/c0d0p1 -- Device or resource busy. This means Linux won't
know about any changes you made to /dev/cciss/c0d0p1 until you reboot --
so you shouldn't mount it or use it in any way before rebooting.

I can reliably reproduce this about 75% of the time. I believe it is so
reproducible as this machine is being reimaged with a different
partitioning scheme each time before I run the installer.

I will attach syslog and partman and can reproduce this as necessary to
get additional information. These logs are from an HP Proliant DL320s
G1 with the Jaunty server amd64 image from March 10 2009 but it is
occurring on multiple different machines and disc images.

Per cjwatson I am creating a new bug rather than attaching this to an
existing similar bug.

[Bug 341967] [NEW] Install hangs after partitioning on blank blue screen

[Bug 341928] Re: Consistently reproducible "device or resource busy" error on partitioning

2009-03-17 Thread Ronald McCollam
This is still reliably repeatable on at least one machine using the
Jaunty Server image from 17 March 2009.

The machine is 'berkelium' in the enablement testing environment, an HP
Proliant DL360 G5.

Attached are syslog and partman from the installer. I'm pretty
consistently able to reproduce this -- I just got it twice in a row. It
can be reproduced here, or for reference here's what I'm doing:

1. Start with a system partitioned to use LVM.
2. Perform an install attempting to repartition the LVM space as a single
normal partition.
3. Observe the behavior described above.

I'm not sure if the steps above are specifically related to reproducing
this bug, but merely describing what we're doing when we see it.

[Bug 354620] [NEW] Recording from microphone stutters when pulseaudio is running

2009-04-03 Thread Ronald McCollam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

On an Acer Aspire One, audio recorded through either the internal
microphone or a microphone plugged into the mic input skips and
stutters. This does not seem to be a function of CPU load; even with
nothing running but the gnome sound recorder this behavior occurs.
Uninstalling pulseaudio and rebooting causes the recorded sound to work
correctly. Reinstalling pulseaudio and rebooting causes the stuttering
to return.

HP ML110 fails to boot with grub after server install via PXE / s

[Bug 356518] Re: HP ML110 fails to boot with grub after server install via PXE / serial console

2009-04-08 Thread Ronald McCollam
While booted from the CD in rescue mode, I ran grub-install:

# grub-install --no-floppy '(hd0)'
You shouldn't call /sbin/grub-install. Please call /usr/sbin/grub-install
instead!

Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
Installing GRUB to (hd0) as (hd0)...
Installation finished. No error reported.
This is the contents of the device map /boot/grub/device.map.
Check if this is correct or not. If any of the lines is incorrect,
fix it and re-run the script `grub-install'.

(hd0) /dev/sda

This did not resolve the issue. The machine still hangs at "GRUB
loading, please wait..."

I can reinstall with LILO (rather than with GRUB and the rescue CD)
before running grub-install if that would be a useful test.

[Bug 356518] Re: HP ML110 fails to boot with grub after server install via PXE / serial console

2009-04-08 Thread Ronald McCollam
Removing the two lines as suggested by Steve Langasek above caused the
machine to boot. (However nothing was displayed on the serial console
until it finished booting.)

A number of other machines in this environment are booting with these
lines in their menu.lst -- at a first look it appears to be only the HP
ML110s that are not booting when they are present, but I will add any
additional hardware that exhibits this behavior to this bug.

[Bug 356518] [NEW] HP ML110 fails to boot with grub after server install via PXE / serial console

2009-04-06 Thread Ronald McCollam
Public bug reported:

I am seeing the following behavior on two HP ML110s:

The install of the Jaunty image is performed via PXE through the serial
console. The install proceeds normally and the machine reboots at the
end. However, the machine does not properly boot from the internal hard
disk via GRUB, instead hanging at "GRUB loading, please wait..." This
occurs whether using the amd64 or i386 image.

Replacing GRUB with LILO causes the machine to boot properly, so the
install seems to be okay... it is only the boot loader that seems to
have an issue.

[Bug 404264] Re: karmic installer fails to detect Intel 82567 network card

2009-08-11 Thread Ronald McCollam
Leann,

This is occurring during the install, so it is a part of the install
environment rather than the installed system. Would that make a
difference as to what modules are available to the kernel at that time?

If it would be helpful to you I can get e.g. the syslog from the install
process up to that point, though it might take me a day or so as I'm not
physically located near the system in question and it has no network
connection during install.

[Bug 412492] [NEW] X flickers wildly whenever anything on-screen updates

2009-08-12 Thread Ronald McCollam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After dist-upgrading today on , X flickers and is unusable any time any
object on the screen is painted. Opening the main menu from the panel
causes the entire screen to flicker for around a second. Switching
desktops or opening/closing/moving a window causes similar behavior.

The flickering appears to be parts of the screen being briefly updated
in the wrong place; it's much like a jerky shift of halves or quarters
of the screen to the wrong position very briefly.

Deactivating compiz does not seem to change this behavior.

The graphics controller is:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS,
943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML
Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

I've attached a video of an example of the effect captured from my
phone. (I apologize for the poor quality of the video, but it gives a
sample of the effect.) In the video I have opened the main menu and
then switched to another virtual desktop. However the same effect
happens during nearly any screen update -- every character I type right
now in this bug report is causing a brief nauseating flash.

[Bug 412492] Re: X flickers wildly whenever anything on-screen updates

2009-08-12 Thread Ronald McCollam
Further testing reveals that this appears to affect my display only when
set to its native resolution (1440x900). Changing to another
resolution, e.g. 1024x768, makes this problem go away.

[Bug 384861] [NEW] Broadcom NetXtreme II (BCM5708) not detected by installer [karmic]

2009-06-08 Thread Ronald McCollam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

The karmic server install is not detecting/configuring BCM5708 network
cards. This is occurring on multiple machines with cards with this chip
on both amd64 and i386.

Performing 'modprobe bnx2' returns no errors but does not cause the
device to be configured.

[Bug 261937] Re: Ubuntu server freeze when running more than one cpu in VMware ESX 3

2009-06-11 Thread Ronald McCollam
So far I have been unable to reproduce this issue. I've been testing on
two machines, a 32- and 64-bit VM, each with 4 processors. I've left
them running unattended, run large compiles on them to peg the
processors, alternated between pegging the CPUs and leaving them idle,
and nothing has yet managed to lock these up.

They're running 8.04.2 currently. Was anyone still seeing this issue on
8.04.2 or do I need to go back and try on e.g. 8.04.1?

[Bug 511624] Re: Audio not directed to external speakers when laptop docked

2010-05-03 Thread Ronald McCollam
Jeremy,

It's been an issue with all the dailies and with the final 10.04 kernel
as well. I have not tried with the upstream kernel yet but will try to
do so this week.

I'm not sure if it's related but I also seem to get a lot of noise
through the speakers that sounds like RFI... e.g. cranking up a process
that works the CPU causes noticeable noise. Dragging a window across
the screen with the volume turned up does as well. So it seems like the
speakers are getting power at least.

10.04 kernel apport-collect data to follow.

** Description changed:

Using an HP Pavilion dv7 with an HP xb4 Notebook Media Docking Station.
When the notebook is connected to the docking station via the expansion
cable, sound is not routed through the docking station but continues to
  play through the notebook speakers.

All other functionality of the dock appears to work -- power, network,
USB, etc. are transferred. Only audio is not.
