[Bug 72872] Re: Users do not have permission to open files in DVDs burnt in a Mac

2010-05-02 Thread Ron Johnson
This affects me, a Debian Sid user, on DVD-R disks burned with a Toshiba
DVR, but not on real DVDs burned at the factory.

Attached is an example of how the DVD-R looks when mounted as ls'ed from
root and then ls'ed from a $USER.

$ uname -a
Linux haggis 2.6.32-3-amd64 #1 SMP Wed Feb 24 18:07:42 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

[Bug 331506] Re: BOINC randomly freezes Ubuntu (Intrepid 64 bit)

2020-11-14 Thread Ron Johnson
Me too! My case is exactly the same as above accept I'm dumb and decided
to run it on a server. After a couple of days of finding the server
unresponsive after a few hours, I was pretty sure the thing that changed
was adding project 'milkyway at home'. i have had two other projects
running without incident. i had also been working on the newfangled (to
me anyways) systemd-resolvconf as well as doing some ufw work around the
same time that server started crashing so am reverting and changing
those as well as i try to isolate the problem. Though i was unable to
connect to server (assuming through the roof load (verified)) however
oddly enough it did respond to soft power from cloud console.

I'm 99.9% sure boinc is the issue simply based on above descriptions.
i'll know in 24 hours and will update tomorrow.

[Bug 1698131] [NEW] Toolbar icons are now to the far right when viewing a message

2017-06-15 Thread Ron Johnson
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from 45.8.0+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 to
52.1.1+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1, the Mail Toolbar buttons were all pushed
to the far right in the "view a message" window. (I do "two pane" with
a separate window for the message.)

To fix this, I had to add a "flexible space" to the right side of the
Mail Toolbar. "Aunt Tillie" might freak out, though.

[Bug 663463] Re: Blank screen on boot unless nouveau was disabled.

2011-01-09 Thread Ron Johnson
Nvidia apparently made some bad chips...

http://www.nvidiasettlement.com/affectedmodels.html
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1013947/why-nvidia-duff-chips-shoddy-engineering

Even if your Dell isn't on the Official List, it might still have the
affected GPU.

I solved the problem by replacing an old-but-just-purchased "G86"
GeForce 8400GS with a new-and-just-purchased "G98" 8400GS.

The key is to look for an 8400GS with 512MB RAM. The 128MB cards are
definitely old and the 256MB cards *might* be old. Another indicator is
that only the G98 cards are PCIe v2 x16, whereas the older ones are v1.

[Bug 998569] [NEW] Embedded MP4 only plays audio in browser window

2012-05-12 Thread Ron Johnson
Public bug reported:

On this page:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012/05/09/redesigning-chkdsk-and-the-new-ntfs-health-model.aspx

is this link:
http://media.ch9.ms/ch9/4af7/90f9956a-4b4b-404a-9f01-a8f4bcb34af7/CheckDiskImprovementsforWin8_high.mp4

Clicking on it blanks the window except for the normal set of media
controls except that they are *at the top* of the window except at the
bottom as usual.

Clicking on the Caret in the upper right of the screen and selecting
Full Screen shows the video and the audio properly. In Full Screen
mode, of course...

On my wife's Maverick computer with FF 11, the video plays but not the
audio.

[Bug 992971] Re: libavformat53 Mismatching header version

2012-05-03 Thread Ron Johnson
Followups:

1) this bug does *not* prevent the video from playing successfully.

2) Added the motumedia ppa last night and upgraded mplayer to
1.0~svn34707-1~precise. That mplayer is at libavformat version 54.0.0
and there's no more version mismatch.

[Bug 1416843] [NEW] Indicator element appears over the panel, not above

2015-02-01 Thread Ron Johnson
Public bug reported:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS
Release:14.04

$ apt-cache policy xfce4-indicator-plugin
xfce4-indicator-plugin:

  Version table:

When I click on an icon in the Indicator "region", the pop-up menu pops up
overlays the xfce4 panel, instead of being above the panel as was the action in
13.10, and even currently in tools(?) like Whisker Menu an Places.
This means that the lowest menu item sits directly over the mouse. For an app
like Transmission-gtk, where "Quit" is the lowest item in the menu, this leads
to many errant closings of the program.

I tried to create a screenshot, but it doesn't work when a Panel menu
has popped up.

[Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver

2011-10-06 Thread Ron Johnson
Since #760814 is deemed a duplicate, I've bounced overhere.

Just installed 11.04 w/ Classic (i.e., GNOME 2.32). GeForce 210 and
binary driver 270.41.06-0ubuntu1. Window movement was stunningly jerky.

Went into CCSM and disabled "Bailer". Now, window movement is
acceptable, but glxgers is still horrible.

[Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver

2011-10-07 Thread Ron Johnson
Daniel, no luck with smooth windows after disabling Detect Refresh Rate.
In fact, they became jerky again.

Also, it turns out that disabling Bailer didn't work well either.

What does seem to work is disabling all Window Management options except
Move Window and Resize Window.

Lastly, as another bit of info: the OpenGL game Extreme Tux Racer
performs well, but the screen is corrupted upon exit. Attached is a
screenprint demonstrating the problem. Actually *doing* the screen
print refreshed the screen.

[Bug 992895] [NEW] Window updates are much slower under 12.04 than 10.10

2012-05-01 Thread Ron Johnson
Public bug reported:

See question #195487, which I think was wrongly assigned to
xserver-xorg-video-nv.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nv/+question/195487

To rehash question #195487: I just upgraded from GNOME 2.32 on a PPA-
loaded Maverick 10.10 to 12.04 using GNOME Classic No Effects.

Window updates are noticeably slower in apps like gnome term, pysolfc
and nethack-x11, while some gtkperf tests are significantly slower on my
machine than on my wife's slower machine.

I ran it under all of the Unity and GNOME variants and the times weren't
significantly different.

This is a list of the significantly slower gtk operations (along with a couple
of faster operations):
http://pastebin.com/M0Ed92Ta

We both have the nvidia 295.40 driver installed.
She still runs a PPA-loaded Maverick system.

My system has an Athlon II X4 640 CPU with GeForce 210 GPU while she has
a Phenom II X2 555 with 8400GS GPU. Does screen size matter?

The monitor, video card and binary driver are the same today as they
were 48 hours ago (when I upgraded).

I get 3400fps in glxgears and Tux Racer responds well, so it's NOT bug
#982485.

It was a clean install from the 64 bit Live DVD, so there's . (Since
/home is on it's own partition, I'm able to upgrade w/o much worry.)

[Bug 908479] [NEW] Drag-and-drop stopped working in v3.1.16

2011-12-24 Thread Ron Johnson
Public bug reported:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 10.10
Release:10.10

$ apt-cache policy thunderbird
thunderbird:
  Installed: 3.1.16+build2+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.10.10.1
  Candidate: 3.1.16+build2+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.10.10.1
  Version table:
 *** 3.1.16+build2+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.10.10.1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-updates/main amd64
Packages
500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-security/main amd64
Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 3.1.4+build2+nobinonly-0ubuntu3 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main amd64 Packages

After upgrading from 3.1.15+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.10.10.1, drag-and-drop
between folders dosn't work any more. Doesn't even seem to try to do anything.

Moving messages using RMB->"Move To" does work, so I'm guessing that the
regression is in some GUI code.

[Bug 1202899] [NEW] Opening emails can slow down drastically

2013-07-18 Thread Ron Johnson
Public bug reported:

Xubuntu 13.04
xfce 4.10.0
thunderbird-globalmenu 17.0.7+build1-0ubuntu0.13.04.1
courier-imap 4.10.0-20120615-1ubuntu1

When an email has a "normal" number of addressees in the To: list,
emails open rapidly. When there are "lots" (in my specific example,
there are 73 addresses in the To: list) of addressees, it takes two
minutes and 100% CPU to open the email.

Disabling the "Messaging Menu and Unity Launcher integration" extension
appears to solve the problem.

[Bug 765357] [NEW] Need to be able to suppress configuration output

2011-04-18 Thread Ron Johnson
Public bug reported:

Hi,

In 0.6.2-4:0.6.2-1ubuntu1~ppa1~maverick1 there is 4.5KB of configuration
output! Even "-loglevel quiet" doesn't suppress it.

Most of the time, (especially in scripts) all that info is not needed
and the noise pollutes the output making it hard to see what's really
important.

So, how to suppress this?

TIA,
Ron
