[Bug 136650] Re: [Gutsy] XGL halves nvidia driver 100.14.11 performance

2007-10-04 Thread Robin Shuff
I upgraded to Gutsy Beta from Feisty and experienced the same problem. I
noticed it significantly degrading application performance. OpenOffice
would slowly refresh it's interface when simply switching windows. The
same slow interface is experienced with Kaffeine and trying to watch
video in Kaffeine would cause Xgl to show 70-80% CPU usage in System
Monitor, with the video still stuttering. This is all with Desktop
Effects disabled.

Uninstalling xserver-xgl fixed all these issues.

I'm using an nVidia FX5600.

Reading around a bit more, is this (and the other similar application
crashes I've been seeing and reporting) related to the new nvidia
driver? Can this be identified?

[Bug 149051] Re: update-manager crashed with ImportError in ()

2007-10-05 Thread Robin Shuff
Yes, good catch. I had a local copy of cairo, I was using for
development ages ago. I've removed it now and update-manager works
without crashing. Bug 149082 is sorted also due to the same problem, so
both can be closed.

[Bug 149082] Re: restricted-manager crashed with ImportError in ()

2007-10-06 Thread Robin Shuff
This bug has been resolved for me by removing an old version of cairo
libraries I had complied myself ages ago under Feisty and were stored in
/usr/local/lib. Again, see bug 149051.

Both these bugs can be closed but I don't know how to close a bug? Mark
it as invalid in this case?

[Bug 221316] Re: [hardy] blank screen on 855GM when playing video using intel driver

2008-04-28 Thread Robin Shuff
I'm seeing exactly the same issue on my Dell Latitude D400 with Intel
855GM graphics on a clean install of Hardy. The laptop completely
freezes with a blank screen and nothing can be done but force a hard
power-down. Forcing X.org to use the i810 driver by editing xorg.conf
seems to avert the problem.

I would suggest this is more significant than Medium importance seeing
as it leads to a total system freeze, requiring a hard power down to
clear, when performing what should be a 'normal' activity. The average
user is not going to know to edit x.org and change the driver to fix
this problem.

I'm happy to provide any other information which may be useful.

[Bug 531306] [NEW] VLC and Kaffeine (amongst others?) don't disable screensaver

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

If I'm playing video/DVDs with VLC, or digital TV with Kaffeine under
Ubuntu 9.10 in full-screen, Gnome-screensaver will kick in after the set
idle time. This doesn't happen with Totem.
