I was able to run gnome-power-manager 1 time. It reported my cordless mouse battery was at 14%. After I replaced the batteries in the mouse the gnome-power-manager went away. Prior to upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy the power- manager worked correctly and showed status for the internal battery and showed the external battery as not present. Something was changed during the upgrade that now makes guidance-power-manage not show status for the correct battery. Is this a bug or a configuration issue? How can this be adjusted? [Bug 212042] Re: Unable to boot Gutsy kernel after upgrade from Feisty
At Wenzhuo's suggestion, I installed the Hardy kernel (linux- image-2.6.24-15-386_2.6.24-15.27_i386.deb) and rebooted with this kernel. This seems to have fixed the problem with my Via chipset. I am able to boot the new kernel and my hard drives show up as SCSI devices (/dev/sdxn) instead of IDE devices (/dev/hdXN). The pata_via module is loaded as well as libata. The IDE modules are not loaded. It seems that the problem with Gutsy has been fixed in Hardy. -- Unable to boot Gutsy kernel after upgrade from Feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/212042 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 220324] Re: Guidance-power-manager stopped working after upgrade to Gutsy
I have found that if kill guidance-power-manager, restart hal and then start guidance-power-manager everything works. So, is this then a hal error? It seems it may be related to or the same as bug 145611. [Bug 212042] Re: Unable to boot Gutsy kernel after upgrade from Feisty
I've found a work-around. I stumbled accross a bug involvoing Seagate Hard Drives. One suggestion to fix that problem was to use kernel parameter "all_generic_ide". I tried this parameter with my default, unmodified Gutsy kernel (2.6.22-14-generic) but it did not work. Then I tried it with my rebuilt Gutsy kernel that had PATA_VIA enabled. This worked. I am able to boot to the Gutsy kernel and have access to all my drives. All drives are installed as SCSI devices. The IDE modules are no longer being loaded, instead modules pata_via, ata_generic and libata are loading. So the steps to get the Via IDE chipset to work with Gutsy are... Build a new Gutsy kernel adding just pata_via module support Install this new kernel Add "all_generic_ide" to menu.lst for the kernel parameter for the new kernel Reboot to the new kernel Rick Knight -- Unable to boot Gutsy kernel after upgrade from Feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/212042 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 212042] Re: Unable to boot Gutsy kernel after upgrade from Feisty
Brian, You've marked this bug as won't fix. What "criteria for a stable release update" does it not match? This seems to be a very common problem, so much so that Via Technologies has released a patch for the Feisty kernel. Marking this as won't fix will mean that anyone with a mobo that has Via VT82C586A/B, VT82C686A/B, VT823xA/C IDE chipset will not be able to run Gutsy out of the box. [Bug 109211] Re: feisty doesn't work with external CD writers anymore
I agree, the old IDE drivers need to be kept around until this bug is fixed. I have an HP DVD Writer 640v external usb drive that would not work on Feisty even though it worked flawlessly on Dapper and previous Kubuntus. I solved the problem by removing the drive from it's portable housing and installing it internally, but this solution won't work for most users. Also, I created bug report 212042, https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/212042, with a similar problem with my hard drives, Via IDE chipset and Gutsy. The cutting edge is nice, but we still need some compatibility with older devices, at least until the bugs are fixed. [Bug 190588] Re: After upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy, Gutsy boot drops to initramfs
I'm getting the same error. I upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy. I had one problem in the upgrade and had to abort. I completed the upgrade in a terminal with these commands... sudo apt-get --configure -a sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade Th upgraded completed successfully. When I rebooted there was a long delay at the splash screen then this... Check root= bootarg cat /proc/cmdline or missing modules, devices: cat /proc/modules ls /dev ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/(boot disk uuid) does not exist. Dropping to a shell. Then I get the Busy Box banner and prompt (initramfs) I have used blkid to verify the uuid is correct. I've edited /boot/grub/menu.lst and /etc/fstab to use drive path (/dev/hdb5 & /dev/sdb5) instead of uuid. I also modified /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and added these lines (from a post at Launchpad)... # added for support of older, standard hdx drives piix ide_generic ide_cd ide_disk # black-list bad driver ata_piix # prevent unnecessary modules from loading (optional) blacklist ata_generic blacklist libata blacklist scsi_mod And then ran... sudo initramfs-tools -u 2.6.22-14-generic to rebuild the init image. I have also removed and re-installed the kernel image (while booted into my Feisty kernel) but that, too did not work. So far nothing has worked. I still boot to a busy box prompt with a message indicating my hard drives can't be found. I am able to boot to my Feisty kernel without any problems. This seems to be an ongoing bug. Is there any hope of a fix? I really DO NOT want to have to reformat my PC to solve this upgrade problem. [Bug 212042] [NEW] Unable to boot Gutsy kernel after upgrade from Feisty
Public bug reported: After an upgrade to Gutsy from Feisty I am unable to boot the Gutsy kernel. I am able to boot the feisty kernel. When I try to boot the Gutsy kernel, I get a busy box prompt (screen shots (photos) attached) with a message that my drive is not available. I have 2 ATA HDDs, 1 IDE/ATA CDROM and 1 IDE/ATA DVD. When I run "ls /dev/disk" no drives are listed and the folders /by-id, /by-path, /by-uuid and /by-label do not exist. I have verified the disk UUID using vol_id and blkid. I have verified /boot/grub/menu.lst has the correct drive UUID. I have verified /etc/fstab is also correct. I have removed un-needed devices from /etc/fstab. I have rebuilt /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-14-generic to specifically load IDE_DISK, IDE_CD, IDE_GENERIC and VIA82CXXX and also to disable libata and the ata drivers. When I upgraded from Dapper to Feisty my system would not boot with the /dev/sd style drive path and I had to change /boot/grub/menu.lst and /etc/fstab to /dev/hd. That hasn't worked with Gutsy as it doesn't create the /dev/hd devices. I think this is due to an incompatibility between my Via VT82C586 chipset and libata. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Unable to boot Gutsy kernel after upgrade from Feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/212042 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 212042] Re: Unable to boot Gutsy kernel after upgrade from Feisty
Tonight I downloaded the Kubuntu 8.04 Desktop ISO. I burned the ISO and then booted from it into Live CD mode. All of my drives are listed and easily accessible. The devices are installed as /dev/hd, not as /dev/sd. So it looks like whatever is causing this problem has been fixed in 8.04. -- Unable to boot Gutsy kernel after upgrade from Feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/212042 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
