[Bug 300925] [NEW] Fail to install 8.04 and 8.10 on Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook E-series

2008-11-21 Thread Ravn
Public bug reported:

Both Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 fail to install on my Fujitsu-Siements Lifebook
E-seriers laptop computer. In the boot menu both memory test and CD integrity
test pass. I can boot into the Ubuntu Live session. However if I try to install
the system I fail at different stages in the installation process. Either of
the following happens:
1. The installation fails when copying files to the formated hard drive saying
there is something wrong with the CD and suggested to re-burn the CD or clean
the CD reader.
2. The creation of the filesystem (ext3 on an 80 GB HD) fails without
explanation when doing the guided partitioning.

The process is the same on both 8.10 and 8.04. I can install latest
Debian Etch without any problems. I will now try to install the
alternate CD to see if it works installing this one. I will complement
this but report with the result thereof. I have previous installed
Ubuntu 8.04 via the Windows installer onto the windows HD without any
problems.

If I can be of any more assistance (like trying something out) please
let me know.

[Bug 396039] [NEW] evince hang when opening a large (by dimensions) file

2009-07-06 Thread Ravn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

When I open a large file (large by dimensions, not by size) evince
consumes a huge amount of RAM and slows the computer down until there is
nothing to do but a hard reset. This happens with (at least) pdf and

The files I consider are not large by size, but by dimensions. See e.g.
the attachment.

[Bug 235071] Re: f-spot fails to export to a Folder

Hi all,

I have f-spot 0.4.4 and tried the trick with disabling Folder Export
0.4.4.0. However I get a fail when I try to install the new version
saying there is a conflict and that I do not have the permission to
remove the old version. Then in parenthesis it says that the plug-in is
in user directory which I interpret as I should be able to delete it...
I don't know?

[Bug 324726] [NEW] text formating toolbar

2009-02-02 Thread Ravn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

If I select the text formating toolbar to be visible it becomes. The I
select the text tool to edit some text. After, I go to another tool the
text formating toolbar disappears again. This is obviously not the
wanted behavior since I before selected that I want the text toolbar
present all time.

Further I think it should be possible to change the formating of text is
the text format toolbar is present even if I haven't selected the text
tool. So i fI have the text toolbar visible and select a text block, I
should be able to change the font.

[Bug 308452] [NEW] Suspend and hibernate on Fujitsu Siemens laptop

2008-12-15 Thread Ravn
Public bug reported:

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook E 8110. In Ubuntu 8.10 Suspend and hibernate
does not work properly. Problems are:
1. Computer does not suspend when lid is closed. This worked on 8.04.
2. Suspension from the menu works and the laptop wakes up when the lid is
opened. However after suspension the screen is some weird state. I have to
press ctl-alt-F11 to get to X-mode. Then the login appears and everything is
fine.
3. Hibernate does not work. The computer hangs if I try hibernate.
Unfortunately I have no more info about this. Please let me know if I can
supply anything else.

My Ubuntu is fully updated.

I use Alt-1, 2, 3... to switch between virtual desktops, and when this
problem occurs also Alt Gr-2 (usually at-sign) also grabs the switch
desktop commend.

If I can give any other information please let me know.

[Bug 435174] [NEW] Highlight mode after save as

2009-09-23 Thread Ravn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

If I set the highlight mode of a particular file and then do "Save as"
on this file the highlight mode is reset to whatever it was before I
specified the highlight mode.

This is not the desired behaviour since the content of the file is not
likely to change because of a save as.

I downgraded to xscreensaver 4.21-3_i386 (with .deb package) and the
problem goes away without a modified .xscreensaver file. So this is
clearly a bug in xscreensaver 4.24 and above.

[Bug 1668297] [NEW] Ubuntu 16.04 4.8.0 kernel crashing on EC2 instances at boot

2017-02-27 Thread James Ravn
Public bug reported:

After switching to the linux-hwe kernel on 16.04.2, we started observing
kernel crashes on boot on some of our EC2 instances (so far, it only
seems to happen on the newer M4 types). The instance becomes
unresponsive when this happens. It looks like a rapl issue - we have
blacklisted intel_rapl and intel_rapl_perf for now. Here is the trace:

This is pretty serious. Is it normal to do a major version update on an LTS

This only seems to happen when trying to restart cloud-init on a running
node after the update. Maybe some transient state that is incompatible
after the update? After rebooting the node, cloud-init can be restarted
successfully.

The additional failures in that log starting at 21:10 are me trying to
debug it by adding some print statements in the associated libraries.
Nothing obvious - for whatever reason the fallback_nic is set to None
which causes the error.

Thanks Scott. We set `manage_etc_hosts` to Yes when we configure new

far as I know.

[Bug 1732917] Re: 17.1 update breaks EC2 nodes

2017-11-21 Thread James Ravn
Changing manage_etc_hosts seems to do something. If I set it to "yes",
and do "systemctl restart cloud-init", my /etc/hosts gets updated. The
main reason I do this is as an easy way to get the local hostname+fqdn
inside /etc/hosts, for resolution purposes. I could modify /etc/hosts
directly, but I thought cloud-init would be the best way to do it. Is it
not?

Cheers, James

However, after purging unity-tweak-tool (and also clearing the apt cache), and
then redownloading/reinstalling - it seems to work again.

'apt-cache policy unity-tweak-tool' still shows the same as above after
this, but now it works as expected.

Thank you!

[Bug 76259] Kernel panic when reading ramdisk from dirty ext3 file system

2006-12-18 Thread Thorbjørn Ravn Andersen
Public bug reported:

I have a Xubuntu 6.06 machine which has worked perfectly but after the
power was pulled, it fails to load the initial ramdisk (a decompression
error), and panics.

Booting on a live CD and fcsk'ing the filsystem caused it to be fixed
from the ext3 journal, but it never got that far in the initial boot
process,so apparently the ramdisk file was for some reason dirty.

[Bug 1499280] [NEW] Desktop icons are put outside visible area on multi-display session

2015-09-24 Thread Thorbjørn Ravn Andersen
Public bug reported:

I cannot see all the icons on my Desktop.

I have a dual monitor setup where the upper left corner of the left
monitor is physically lower than the upper left corner of the right
monitor. Therefore I have configured the monitor layout accordingly
(hopefully see attached screenshot).

To my understanding this is implemented by having a single very large
rectangular display area where each monitor displays its own snippet,
where the upper left corner of this rectangle is therefore not shown.
It appears however that the automatic placement of icons on the desktop
calculates from the invisible corner of the whole display area, and does
not take in consideration that the monitor will not show this.

The icons are there, I can use Ctrl-A to mark all and move them with the
mouse by grabbing one of the icons which are actually visible. I just
cannot see them.

Please advise.

[Bug 400863] Re: ck-history can take a *long* time to run, during which gdm is unusable

2011-02-28 Thread Thorbjørn Ravn Andersen
We have a Ubuntu 10.04 LTS machine set up in vmware for serving a git
repository over ssh and our Hudson instance do several polls a minute.

This is how our /var/log/ConsoleKit looks:

root@Sandbox:/var/log/ConsoleKit# ls -l
total 457424
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 228364612 2011-02-28 14:41 history
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 210159903 2011-02-01 08:00 history.1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12436950 2011-01-01 07:45 history.2.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10235104 2010-12-01 07:46 history.3.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6888399 2010-11-01 07:43 history.4.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root293954 2010-10-01 07:37 history.5.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 267 2010-09-14 15:56 history.6.gz
root@Sandbox:/var/log/ConsoleKit#

This has resulted in a load over 1 for the last couple of weeks as the
vmware instance primarily is at the login screen, and I've just analyzed
it and found that the culprit is ck-history with 99% cpu usage.

Is there any particular reason why fancy history parsing is necessary to
provide a _server_ login screen?

How do I disable this behaviour?

Thanks in advance

/Thorbjørn Ravn Andersen
