[Bug 1801602] [NEW] Gnome 3 fullscreen doesn't work for some applications
Public bug reported: Using Gnome 3 or Ubuntu session (default in 18.04) when you try to run some game in fullscreen mode instead it opens at top left small window. This happens for example for Way to Go! Steam game and perhaps any SDL 1 game. It's easy to reproduce, install a game using SDL 1 library for example abe (apt install abe) and try to run it. There are two kinds of effect, the abe and perhaps other games from Ubuntu repository fails to run properly fullscreen only on first use after login. On second and further run they launch properly on fullscreen. The Steam game (Way to Go !) fails to run fullscreen each time. Sometimes you see only part of the game screen at top left window and you even can't operate it, sometimes whole screen is shown. When you manage to reach game settings switching fullscreen on and off few times makes the fullscreen run properly. The problem doesn't exist for example using Unity or Windowmaker sessions. It exists using any Gnome 3 Xorg sessions, even the classic one. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1801602 Title: Gnome 3 fullscreen doesn't work for some applications To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1801602/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1801602] Re: Gnome 3 fullscreen doesn't work for some applications
Further investigation shows that the abe game fails fullscreen only when I have additional xrandr mode added. It's set within session startup script with commands: output="HDMI-0" xrandr --nograb --newmode "960x540" 40.75 960 992 1088 1216 540 543 548 562 -hsync +vsync xrandr --nograb --addmode $output 960x540 When I disable the mode addition abe runs fine fullscreen. [Bug 1813212] [NEW] Ubuntu dock auto-hide using mouse is unreliable
Public bug reported: This is usability bug that exists in Ubuntu starting from 2012 (see this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/996158) Using mouse with Ubuntu dock auto-hide mode makes the mouse to shift left while pointer stays in place (at the left edge). The effect is your mouse is shifting (every time you try to access the dock) to the left until there is no space on the table and you have to take it up and move to the right. This is very inconvinient and makes usage of the dock unreliable. The issue seems to be caused such a reveal mechanizm when you have to "push" the pointer do the left edge to make dock to re-appear. The faulty behaviour has been introduced in Unity-2D, than copied to Unity than copied to gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock. [Bug 1326567] Re: [Asus M4A88T-M] problem with drm:drm_mode_addfb and drm:radeon_crtc_page_flip
Looking at the description of above macros at ./include/drm/drmP.h the logging is active only when drm.debug kernel option is set. Indeed I found this option in my /etc/default/grub file: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="plymouth:debug splash quiet drm.debug=0xe" It seems the option is not default in recent Ubuntu release (at least 14.04), becouse restoring content of the file to default makes the line look like this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" How the drm.debug option did get to the configuration file I don't know. Maybe this is remainder from prevoius Ubuntu release ant stayed after upgrade ? Thus there is no need to recompile kernel modules, just remove the drm.debug kernel option from /etc/grub/default and regenerate grub configuration with update-grub. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1326567 Title: [Asus M4A88T-M] problem with drm:drm_mode_addfb and drm:radeon_crtc_page_flip To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1326567/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks Christopher but I think my problem is pretty the same as in this bug report. Looking at the source code provided with Ubuntu 14.04 distribution it seems the reason is just some debug logging switched on in the kernel file: linux-source-3.13.0/drivers/gpu/drm/radeon/radeon_display.c There is radeon_crtc_page_flip function that contains: DRM_DEBUG_DRIVER("flip-ioctl() cur_fbo = %p, cur_bbo = %p\n", work->old_rbo, rbo); The command is called unconditionally. Similiar issue is on x86, but the launcher reveals sometimes when you try to move the mouse after the left edge of the screen. The behaviour seems to be inentional (except it shoud work always), related to this "feature": http://design.canonical.com/2012/01/launcher-reveal-prototype/ The feature was introduced in the unity-2d 5.7 version as https://launchpad.net/bugs/765819. Experimenting with dconf-editor shows that setting com.canonical.Unity2d.Launcher edge-reveal-presure to 0 makes the auto hide behavoiur to work more or less similiar as before. Introducing the new reveal behavoiur without easy way to achieve the old behavoiur makes realy bad experience from users point of view. [Bug 1810688] [NEW] Snap-installed .desktop items cannot be overridden
Public bug reported: Snaps for GUI applications provide .desktop items via files in ${SNAP}/meta/gui/*.desktop files. These are picked up by the gnome launcher that lists them accordingly. However, unlike .desktop files from /usr/share/applications, these cannot be overridden by copying .desktop files into ~/.local/share/applications/ and modifying them accordingly. One of the use cases for this is, for example, fixing rotated camera issue in Skype, that requires launching skype with preloaded v4l1compat.so. A simple fix for Skype is to replace Exec=skype %U with Exec=env LD_PRELOAD="/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so" skype %U in skypeforlinux.desktop file. However, unlike expected, the presence of ~/.local/share/applications/skypeforlinux.desktop results in duplicate items for Skype in gnome launcher. [Bug 1810688] Re: Snap-installed .desktop items cannot be overridden
In such a case, there should be an option to hide .desktop items for a particular app from the launcher. There are cases when fixes in .desktop items are the only sane way of fixing stuff, and the camera issue is a great example of this. That camera model is mounted upside-down in some laptop models and upright in others. There is no way to determine the correct orientation from USB id. Kernel module options are also not a solution, as kernel policy discourages any image processing done in the kernel modules. I do not suggest an option to do any user-edits within snaps (I agree having snaps self-contained and not user-editable is a good idea), but rather gnome launcher properly picking up a .desktop override from .local user dir. One can easily do this with command-line snaps by adding shell alias. IMHO local .desktop overrides are completely analogous to that. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1810688 Title: Snap-installed .desktop items cannot be overridden To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/snapd/+bug/1810688/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi John, thank you for the information. The .desktop files are indeed located in /var/lib/snapd/desktop. And their names are in the following format: snap-package-name_original-name.desktop.
